Hello friends.
Kilmainham gaol opened in 1796 as the County Gaol for Dublin, but it was also used to hold political prisoners during Ireland's struggle for independence. It closed in 1924, but by then had witnessed many key political events, and housed some icons of Irish history. It is now a museum run by the Office of Public Works, an agency of the Government of Ireland.
Children were sometimes arrested for petty theft, the youngest said to be a seven-year-old child, while many of the adult prisoners were transported to Australia. Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed in the prison by the orders of the UK Government.
