Your videos are excellent and under appreciated. I love the way you systematically show all the necessary elements of plant identification.

Thank you for the kind words. I spent years working on this project before making these videos and you made my day with this comment. I suspect that others may take more of an interest next year when I start putting the uses of these plants into practice, there's a method to my madness. Thanks for stopping by and for the good words.
So professionally made, thank you. And so thorough too. Awesome. I think the main distinguishing factor are the purple spots and lack of hair on the stem. :)
Im pretty sure you got the wrong symptoms. Dry mouth, dilated pupils, etc... are symtomps of deadly nightshade, datura and henbane poisoning, not hemlock

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I just double checked my sources with the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. I was wrong about the dryness of the mouth and dilated pupils. Here are the symptoms according to the two organizations: "The general symptoms of hemlock poisoning are effects on nervous system (stimulation followed by paralysis of motor nerve endings and CNS stimulation and later depression), vomiting, trembling, problems in movement, slow and weak later rapid pulse, rapid respiration, salivation, urination, nausea, convulsions, coma and death." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15234067. I will either try to add annotations to the video to fix it or remove the video all together.
Thanks for your video. It is growing pretty heavily in my state right now. You have good shots of the plant and a good explanation so I know what to look for. I'm surprised you didn't mention Socrates death though. :)

Hi Hisseefit, thanks for the compliment. Wow I can tell this was one of my first videos. I did briefly mention Socrates @1:20 but I should have gone into more detail because it is an interesting anecdote. Thanks for stopping by.
Wow! I am so glad I watched this! This is growing next to my garden and it is taller than me! I was stupid and broke it open with my bare hands. I know not to be doing that anymore! Do you think that it could affect the soil where my food grows adjacent to it?
8 років тому+3
Hi Stephanie, that's a good question, and I can see the concern. I would think that your garden would be ok as long as the hemlock plants are not growing in the same bed. I will look into this some more to see if the soil itself can be affected by the plant's toxins.

It causes dry mouth. I chewed 5 of the seeds after a rough estimate of the LD before I went in for a check out. I know it worked because I could feel its other effects and my heart rate went off the chart.

I haven't read anything about it's ability for pest control, but I would be extremely cautious about using it on tomato (vegetable) plants for fear that the plant would absorb the toxins and thus poison whomever eats it. I will try to look into that.
Well, I was pulling weeds at a veterans home and got a rash from it on my neck and my left arm, anyone know how to get rid of it? Or just treat it as it’s ivy, oak, or sumac?
Would NOT IN NO WAY say Poison Hemlock is medicinal in any way. Someone might not understand how deadly it is and try to use it for medicinal purposes in the way that you listed. I'm just saying, cover your ... think about it. Scary
