- In October of 2021 I thru-hiked the 77 mile Foothills Trail in South and North Carolina. This video is part one of that hike. I had no idea how fantastic this trail was going to be. It was full of streams, waterfalls, lakes, climbs, and even had unobstructed views. Hiking the Foothills Trail would be a great way to start preparing for longer hikes, and might be the best trail for a first thru hike in the Southeast.

I’ve been hiking this trail for over 20 years and thru hiked it twice, once in each direction. It’s an 8 day trip for me. I noticed you stopped on the banks of Lake Jocassee before the Toxaway River. I always go just a little farther to the Toxaway River. A camp site with a picnic table is such a luxury. And they’ve added a permanent outhouse since your hike.

Thanks for documenting - this was my first thru hike last year. Plenty of water sources, beautiful stream crossings and waterfalls. All around, hard to top this for a first timer. Taz is indeed The Man.
We completed our hike in 5 days/4 nights in the same W to E direction which averaged about 15 miles per day. Took the plunge in the lake at Table Rock state park - well needed scrubbing! I can't recommend this hike enough!
