You are such a valuable asset to our little local region. Because of you, so many international viewers (and German ones from different parts of the country) get to see this region. I can't thank you enough. ☺
2:13 There is a route without steps (along the road cars and coaches take to the castle, Lindtalstraße, Dürrbachweg etc.), but it's a massive detour through the forest.
"Bienen oder keine Bienen" 😂 That's a thing working better in English than in German 😆 Thanks for showing that place, there are so many like that around.

I grew up in a small town next to Freudenberg, and I have a few amazing childhood memories about the adventures to the castle. My dad took us there on a few Sunday afternoons in autumn. In the summer, we had many bicycle tours to the ice cream shop on the Main. And once I grew older, Freundenberg was a valuable asset, because it was in another state, were the shops are allowed to stay open longer an you could buy beer after 8p.m. ;)
I absolutely love this format! Part is necause you are lovated in an arra of Germany that I don't know well , but mostly because of your sense for small details. Thank sou and keep up the good work, Andrew!
I wish I discovered your channel earlier, in 2019 I was living for half a year in Aschaffenburg as an exchange student. Hopefully I get a chance to revisit Aschaffenburg again and it's neighbouring places like the Freudenburg Castle!
I just discussed with my wife that we will be taking a few trips this fall based on your videos. Major trips are not feasible right now due to some personal restrictions, so we'll do nearby tours. Thanks to your videos, there are so many destinations still to explore. We live only about 20 km away from you. Therefore, the local tours are perfect. Thank you for the great ideas. Rewboss Tours 🙂
Ah, a honorable mention of my birth town of Crailsheim. 😀 And you can definitely find a string of those medium- to sometimes quite large unknown castles if you follow rivers like the Neckar or Main with hills on their sides.
There are so many amazing castles around Germany, it's a shame that Neuschwanstein and similar vanity-palaces get all the fame. The one in my home town is super well preserved with some incredibly vibrant history, and I know of at least two other ones a few towns over that are similarly breathtaking.
@@hansmeiser32 I don't want to run the risk of doxxing myself, but it's somewhere in Upper Franconia. My comment was more about how diverse and widespread historical sites in Germany are in general.
@rewboss Another very neat castle / ruin in that area is the Henneburg in Stadtprozelten (only like 10km away from freudenberg). If you don't already know that one, it is definitly worth checking out too! Additional fun facts: the town Dorfprozelten located right next to Stadtprozelten is actually slightly bigger despite the name. Stadtprozelten does not have a bridge but you can cross the main via ferry
I guess I bicycled there 50+ years ago. Last fall I ‘discovered’’ a castle ruin - Burg Stahlberg, often confused with Stahleck, the castle youth hostel above Bacharach. Stahlberg is above the Bacharach suburb of Steeg, about a km from the Rhine. Nice ruin. There was one other person there
The view from the keep isn't the only reason for its hight. The keep is also to cover the palas - the main residential building of a castle - against the side of attack.
Very nice I was in that area some years ago. There are 2 other nice castle ruins within 10 km of Freudenberg along the Main. Kollenburg, outside Collenberg and Henneburg outside Stadtprozelten. Both on the other side of Main. And of course the non-ruin castle in Miltenberg.
Awesome and informative Video. The best part of the video is the icecream at the end. There could be no better choise than a "Spaghetti ice" wich is quir famous in Germany.. 😃😀🤣
A barrier free access to the castle is via Lindtalstraße and Hindenburgstraße - the latter of which is still named after the late Reichspräsident, regardless of his more than questionable historical role. It's quite a detour, but by far not as steep as the direct paths from the old town directly uphill. Fun fact: it crosses a creek in the gorge between two hillslopes, which is called Arschkerbersbrünnle - literally "asscrack spring".
Dear Andrew, I always enjoy your videos. There's one small caveat: The music overlay. While there are many, many far worse examples of this on UA-cam, I wish there were no music overlays at all, unless the music closely relates to the subject in question. Narration and video should be enough on their own, in my humble opinion.
Nice these sort of ruins are all over the country, some in better repair than others. I'd find it interesting if you could highlight some in the palatinate, which I understand is a bigger undertaking for you.
Concerning "Not a theme park": Freudenberg/Kirschfurt bekommt höchst wahrscheinlich eine Umfahrung.
Great video! I like how you mentioned Heidelberg first. I graduated from the American High School there in 1976. My prom and graduation were held in the Schloss.
Yes, it looks like it (except for the extra rolled wafer that doesn't fit the theme). No wonder, as it was invented by an Italian in Mannheim, only about 80 km (50 miles) from Freudenberg as the crow flies.
Another great video, just returned from my visit to Germany on Thursday. Wanted to get over to Aschaffenburg, yet did not make it, guess next trip. Thought I would mention a few locations I use to enjoy going to when I lived in Germany 25 years ago. All in Hessen, Schloss Alsbach, Felesnmeer Odenwald, and Bergruin Tannenburg.

I visited Schloss Veldenz in the Moselle/Hunsruck-region and it kind of reminds me of this castle.
I was just in the "famous" Freudenberg, only a week ago...
Nice find. I love these places and that we have so many of them, hidden everywhere.
I love castles like this one - thank you for showing us around!
Okay, Freudenburg on the river Main. I can also recommend to visit the Freudenburg in Switzerland near the village Bad Ragaz!
Thanks for the video! I live relatively close to Freudenberg, so I will add this small town to my list

I'll be in Rettersheim near Wertheim in 2 weeks. There's a disused train tunnel there, might make a nice video.

Freudenburg has associated buildings down the hill. One of them is Freudenhaus.
My Hometown! Love it
Never been there, but the name was familiar: I did my W15 in the 80s in Hardheim (a mere 30 km from Freudenberg).
Nice these sort of ruins are all over the country, some in better repair than others. I'd find it interesting if you could highlight some in the palatinate, which I understand is a bigger undertaking for you.
Nice trip. Thx.👍🏾😎
Castles like this probably exist in almost every town in Germany.
Do Burg Abenberg next^^
How did it not have a road for things like carts, and several people next to each other?
I hope you are still in the region, because there are much more interesting ruins like in Collenberg, Stadtprozelten and Buchen.
as a born and raised siegen local i was kinda confused for a little while lmao.
4:20 1995 cannot be right, the first open air theater performance there took place in 1987.
Maybe the theater was there when the ruin was still not open for visitors except on events.
Your German pronunciation is getting really good.

Yes, it looks like it (except for the extra rolled wafer that doesn't fit the theme). No wonder, as it was invented by an Italian in Mannheim, only about 80 km (50 miles) from Freudenberg as the crow flies.
Americans would call this kind of ice cream _gelato_ - to differentiate it from their usual ice cream which is made in quite another fashion
come to Weilburg please!!!
You were wrong: I've heard of the castle and I'm not from the local area. I've been there many times to watch open air theater performances.
A visit to Freudenberg is not complete without a visit to the Freudenhaus
