MOTORWEEK: Around 3:51 you state that the M5 has no dedicated park. In fact, it does, with all of the DCTs in the M cars, all you do is turn the ignition off while in drive and the car will put itself in park. You can sort of think of it like a manual transmission, except with these, the car operates the clutch for you. I work at a BMW dealership.
It’s great you work for BMW AS a LEVEL 1 Technician for 18 yrs you hear what customers are saying it appears you had no contact the customers as this has come up a lot and you totally missed the point yes we all know if you turn off the car it automatically goes into park what people are looking for on the M5 DCT the lever to have a park position, some people are not ready for that change or do they like the E-park button. As a representative of BMW YOU need to adjust to people and there preferences and show the positive not your negatives I would love to talk with your GM what Dealership your at again ?
@ Turbo S. I think William was just trying to help no need for your sarcastic and condescending comment! Maybe we need to contact your supervisor and tell him how cynical and condescending you are. What alley did you crawl out of?? What an A hole. Just what we need more of in this society.
He was wrong. There is no way it jumps from 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds with launch control. It certainly has to be under 4 seconds, considering Car and Driver has recorded a time as fast as 3.7 seconds.
There are a lot of variables to consider here, from the temperature and type of the asphalt, to the fact that this M5 may have been brand new and the brake pads and rotors may not have been fully broken in yet. The type and condition of the tyres also matters a lot.
Probably because they weighed a bit less than this one, and maybe the older M5s had brakes that were tuned for more initial bite vs track brakes where they dont overheat as much with repeated hard stops.
I own one @127k. Runs better than new. If you can keep up with regular maintenance including oil changes every three to five thousand miles the BMW engine is indestructible.
I am glad I bought a REAL ///M car. The E39 M5. All manufacturers cannot compete with design driveability and raw power as the Germans did with the E39 M5. You guys enjoy your newer fancy LED cars with touch screen this and info tainment that.
If you knew anything about cars, or certainly at least anything about the M5, you'd understand that the manual gearbox in this car is the same unit you got in an E60 545i and 550i 9 years ago. It's old, geared for economy not performance and never designed to be installed in this car. Therefore it's utterly unsuitable and a massive fly in the ointment. So you're not getting "the max" at all. Key words, "the past", this is not the 1990s anymore. BMW's DCT box is world class.
Lol, MT & C&D had both 0-60 in 3.7s, 1/4 mile in 11.8s, both also got the E60 0-60 in 4.1s & 12.3 in the 1/4, seems like motorweek's drivers aren't as good...
Disappointed that there's no dedicated Park position on the shifter? Maybe you didn't notice that it isn't an automatic? :S And anyway, just man up and get the manual.
Gordon Liddy great value ! I just found one for $39000 USD last August. Only 17500 miles no accidents ! Car is mint and it out performs a ton of vehicles that you can buy new for that same price hands down . Plus even if you drive it to the ground , you won’t lose much more when you go to resell it !
This isn't 2002 and nor is the "automatic" anything like the box you get in a pickup truck and has completely outclassed the manual relic that's an option for this car. You ought to try them out before commenting but I'm sure you have no interest in that because you want to look big and clever on a forum when you actually look ridiculous.
You can't really be serious comparing the two (three) cars based on 10'ths slower in the 1/4 and ask what you're paying for??? I.e. SRT8 on Nurburgring ... 8:49 ... M5 : 7:54 ... that tell you what you pay for ... yes, if you like American styling, can't tell plastic from high-end leather interior (or don't like the look) and all you focus on is 0-60 ... M5 is not the car for you ... get the WRX ... cheaper and faster than SRT8 ...
I won't listen to when i have talked to many mechanics and they said that no matter how good or bad the gearbox is, the manual is the best option. The auto is good just for city driving.
I seriously cannot stand how you guys talk all over the videos. Nobody in the world cares to hear you rattle off all those stats that they can read on their own. They watch video "with sound" to hear the car. That's what you can't get from a magazine or a blog. If you want to talk for six minutes straight just do it on a different video, it absolutely ruins the experience of watching a video of a CAR. Might as well put music over the video too.
You guys sound like high school kids I have 2014 M5 comp pkg. I’ve driven both manual and DCT the manual was fun at first but the DCT was just as fun but the better of the two you would know this if you ever owned one and if you actually owned one you would not be here acting like immature little boys
KEVIN MANSFIELD hey man what’s up, any issues with the car? I’m gonna look at 2015 competition package blue really nice this week, I don’t know much about bmw I always been a Lexus guy lol I owned high horse power cars I currently own an mkiv Toyota Supra 600hp i’m pretty knowledgeable with cars, but I always heard so many negative stuff about The m5 not performance wise just mechanically, like the previous V 10 one I really like the car, but on this v8 twin turbo engine I been researching I’m seeing very good reviews on it, any tips you could give me I would appreciate it thanks man
KEVIN MANSFIELD Exactly, if they owned one, they would not be here. If they like manuals, they wouldn't be watching a film about the M5, you're right. BMW no longer makes anything like purist drivers' cars bigger than the M2, they make everyday luxury and autobahn barges - hence the lack of a manual. For talented drivers who like to pootle to the track and have fun in performance toys, a Caterham, Nomad or Porsche is the best bet. Otherwise, enough grunt to get up to speed is all road users really need. Well said.
Gtr might be faster but it is not liveable as this does not got as much room and gtr cost as much just look it up once the taxes fuel guzzer add gtr can be as much you might be faster but I can load my kids there gear and go on vaction in comfort you not as much
You've just given the game away. Most mechanics will say manuals are better than semi autos because there's typically less to go wrong. But until double clutch boxes came along the semi autos in question (not full autos like you get in family cars and trucks for the 4th time) were MUCH worse in town. They were only in their element when going up and down gears at speed. I've worked in BMW aftersales since I was 17. You've just proven you don't know what you're talking about.
No more faster than a electric American car, not to mention this car is plain, only thing i see that is fancy is the million way adjustable seats and some window shades. BMW's have always have the same boring interiors imo.
At the risk of repeating myself again I'll explain this 1 last time. You're just trying to show off and don't realise you're making a fool out of yourself over something you blatantly don't understand. It depends entirely on the quality of the box and the character of the car. In the case of the F10 M5 a manual is wrong. It's an old, badly geared relic from the E60 545i & 550i. It's not suitable for a performance car. It's an afterthought and a cheap fix for the US market. It spoils the car.
Why don't you read anything I post? The fact you've said all that shows you are completely clueless. Never judge cars on paper. It's not a question of manual vs semi auto, it's a question of what is the better box for each car. The manual box available on the M5 (only in USA) is an old relic from the E60 5 Series. The F10 M5 was designed from the ground up to use the DCT box which is light years ahead of any run of the mill auto in a family car or truck like you're referring to.
Since when has England been America? When you're in a hole, stop digging. 3 things are perfectly clear: You don't know anything about cars, you don't drive and you can't read. If the gearbox is bad it doesn't matter who or what changes gear. In the case of the M5 - the DCT box is the one. Driving proves this. The manual is a cheap fix afterthought lifted from a 9 year old E60 SE, not an M division model. My M3 is a manual but I don't go round bragging about it because I know how good DCT is.
I've driven a 1995 manual gearbox and it shifts just fine of course a 2013 manual would be great but i would give everything just not to have a semi-auto...Just man up.
It's the same story every time I challenge someone to a belief that they don't even understand. You get an idea and then just try and bullshit the rest to the death and trip over yourself. There's even a video of someone in an M5 somewhere telling you not to buy the manual because the gearbox is crap. The M5 was designed to use DCT. For some reason America demanded a manual version so they botched one together. BMW know it won't sell and don't market it anywhere else…because it's shite.
Automatic on every car is shit and more for women manual is the gearbox that is gonna let your BMW or every car in the world go as fast as it can. You know that the automatic is more unstable and with the manual you are supported very well even if the manual on the M5 is very good. Your just a lazy old guy. Man up and ride a good ride :D
Dude you sound like an idiot and an utter asshole!!! Yes a manual can be more fun in CERTAIN cars. However to say the manual Is the fastest way is JUST PLAIN WRONG!!! I understand that preaching the gospel of the manual gearbox on the internet makes you feel like a superstar but the manual gearbox fitted to this is junk and not worthy of any performance car. You should get out more.

I'm not making a fool of myself, i'm just telling the truth and you are arguing about nothing :)
