Unicorn overlord taught me or reminded me of something very important and that is just because the story is simple it doesn't mean it's bad and considering that fire emblem engage also has a simple story but the characters are very weak and not interesting and very very trophy and one-dimensional, Unicorn at the very least doesn't have that problem because the characters feel more interesting and they feel more like actual people rather than troops. And I also heard that there is some nusnce in unicorn overlord's story and combined with me looking up the voice cast and finding out that it's a very very stacked voice cast, oh yeah I'm definitely gonna get this on my birthday next month. All of the other medieval selections are all pretty good, though some older titles do make me wish that they would rereleased by now, I am looking at you Tales of Phantasia. Soild list overall Alex!
Golden Sun + Golden Sun: The Lost Age (both for GBA) also deserve a mention. They're pretty special.
Always great to see the love for Triangle Strategy on your channel!
I'll always stan for Triangle Strategy!
I beat Trinagle Strategy a few days ago. I loved how there are barely any fantasy elements to it. Aside from some spells and magic (which are mostly for combat diversity), it is overall fairly realistic story that just sets on a fictional world. Not a single monster in the game for example (Similar to the anime Arslan Senki). I really enjoyed the cabinet sections for choosing your path, by disscussing and convicing the party members to vote on the way you wish for, as techically Serenoa himself doesn't vote.
You bring up an interesting point in that there's no fantastical creatures in it, even though the world is filled with magic. And I do agree that it's because of this that the world feels more grounded than other fantasy worlds, and why some folks disliked it so much. That said, it's one of my favorite tactical RPGs of all time, given its streamlined nature and how the classes themselves managed to integrate with the characters they're tied to extremely well.
I should stop gawking at the game right now or else I'll be writing another 15+ minute review for it! LOL
How i wish there were more Matsuno games out there. What a legend!
I'd love to see a brand new Matsuno game! Heck, even a new Ogre Battle!
i think these are all some additional great medieval fantasy type games: FF Tactics, Vandal Hearts, Suikoden 3, FF (1 - 6, 9, 12 , 16), Fire Emblem 1-9, Radiant Historia: perfect chronology. There are just so many good choices.
I need to play Radiant Historia! I’ve never finished it!
The only game in the list I've played is Triangle Strategy (which was incredible). I have Unicorn Overlord next in line to start playing. I really want to buy Dragon Quest 11 as well since it is such a legendary series.
DQ11 is great
DQ11 is one of my all time favorites. It made me to full blown DQ fan.
This is a great list! Obviously there are too many to mention -
FF9
Dragon Force
FF Tactics
Breath of Fire
Odin Sphere
I was considering FFT and Odin Sphere, but I've mentioned them in list videos before!
@@BacklogBattle I love that your list wasn't the most obvious choices! Shed some light on stuff people may not know about. Especially games that haven't been updated like dragoon and vagrant story.
It's so cool to look back over the history of JRPGs and see the sheer variety of medieval fantasy-themed games that have come out over the years. Fantastic list!
Quite the "mesmerizing" thumbnail 😏
Love medieval fantasy games. Thanks for sharing.
Path of Radiance is one game I totally want to play someday. I don't have a way to play it. I loved this list. Thanks Alex.
I see love for Vagrant Story. Well done, my friend. Well done.
I'll always mention Radiant Historia whenever I have the chance. Love everything about that game from its story, gameplay to the soundtrack.
Dragon Quest 11S is immensely fun.
Play 3D mode for the mods, or 2D mode for the classic feel.
I've found the playthrough so much faster in 2D, and being able to swap to 3D for side quests and content that would otherwise be missed is great.
What kind of mods do they have?
@@BacklogBattle Mostly costume swaps. There are a few experience and item drop mods, some thats upscale the entire game graphically to be more in line with the PS4 HD, mods that up the quality of the music, etc.
Most of the mods are purely cosmetic
At some point I should play Vagrant Story, because to my chagrin I never got further than the first fight.
I hope these count. My picks are
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy
Dragon Quest XI
Final Fantasy IV
Legend of Kartia
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
Tales of Berseria
The Last Story
The Witch and the Hundred Knight
Ys III: The Oath in Felghana
Handful of games in this list just staring at me from the backlog. I need to get around to them!
9:21 you missed out Final Fantasy IV being released on DS! That is the version with some voice acting in cutscenes, which overall is good.
Aahh! You are right! How could I forget that?!
Maybe you forgot because this video took so much work to make. ;) Good video overall.
Radiata Stories is one of my all time favorites and definitely meets the medieval setting. A remaster would be incredible but Tri-Ace / Square need to do a port to modern consoles at the very least!
The start of this video was funny in at least the similarities as my dragon’s dogma 2 adventure features the journeys of Paul Atreides and Daenerys Targaryen 😅
I did come across the Paul Atreides sliders when I was shopping around for looks!
Awesome list! Can’t wait to dive into Unicorn Overlord.
Also, I always thought Ashley’s last name was actually pronounced like ‘ree-ott’😅
Vagrant Story is slept on, what a clASSIC GAME.
Right?! Remake with QoL please!!!
Path of Radiance is utterly fantastic, however I screwed up during my initial playthrough and lost too many units along the way, so I was never able to defeat the final boss 😭
That happened to me during my first playthrough, when I replayed the game, I played much smarter and was able to beat the game with most of my troops. That said, I am glad the new Fire Emblem let you disable permadeath, its just too tedious to deal with.
@@DanielSantosAnalysis Yeah man, permadeath was an absolute nightmare to deal with in the older Fire Emblem games. I'll have to retry Path of Radiance again one day!
I cannot stop playing Unicorn Overlord! My GOTY, maybe best of all time
Shining Force 3 ( it’s all been translated now), Vandal Heart 1 and 2, Dragon Force 1 and 2 are better than some games on this list because they are very good but also offer something different than some entries ( like FF tactics and Tactic Ogre are super close, why play FF4 over FF6 when they also share a lot, etc).
Nice to hear about Shining Force 3 after all this time!
Amazing indeed, my most favorite in these list are ToP❤
So that's why the dragon's dogma character customization scene looked so familiar... it was Daenerys Targaryen 🤣
Shining force 2 is super good
lol my personal top 10 list is chock full of Dragon Quest
If I did that, this list would be quite boring to watch!
@@BacklogBattle lol not for me 🤣🤣🤣
Final Fantasy tactics for all 10 slots :)
Unicorn Overlord is really the Best of them all for me. So incredible !
I'll be pushing for that game as much as I can!
If I had to choose only one to buy, should I get Triangle Strategy or Tactics Orge?
Good question! If you’re new and you really love story, Triangle Strategy! If you love deep interconnecting systems that take a long time to learn, Tactics Ogre!
@BacklogBattle Thanks I'm more of a story first kind of person, so maybe I'll go with Triangle Strategy. Definitely not new to the SRPGs, but never played either for some reason.
Fire emblem path of radiance is the goat 😊😊😊😊😊 i killed my gamecube playing this so much 😅
This is great! I love fantasy a lot more than science fiction! 👍🏾👍🏾💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Both are great
I would recommend Arcturus.
I will look it up! Thank you!
I'm sad Unicorn Overlord is not on the PC like Tactics Ogre which even has mods.
It's also sad Vagrant Story wasn't a success.
The downfall of Vagrant story was a lot of gamers didn't understand in that game you had to level up your weapons for different classes. As fighting an enemy of one class increase the weapon experience for that group it lowers the experience of an adjacent group. You couldn't fight all enemies with the same weapon. Once you figured that out the game became much easier.
I remember "toothpicking" the Wyvern to death playing the same tune over and over again. The music became stucked in my head with the subwoofer booming the floor for at least 30 minutes. I got good timing my swings doing 1 point of damage with each swing. It's then I learned about leveling up my weapons for each group.
Final Fantasy 9
Nintendo's been on the remaster/remake bandwagon, so it might only be a matter of time before Fire Emblem PoR gets re-released!
