For the first time in my life, after years of doodling about on my old guitar, I finally understand what secondary dominants are, Gracie. Thank you so much. You are a treasure house of music theory that even this philistine can understand.
Gracie, think you for being such a great communicator and realizing how important it is to pass on the gift of music to others. We can't take it with us when we go, so it is vital that this gift continue to be passed on from generation to generation. You are absolutely amazing...
Finally had the time to watch this duo series on secondary dominants. Thank you so much, Gracie! V/V and V/IV info is gold, and as always, brilliantly presented, and easy *and fun* to follow.
youre the best gracie! as an up and coming musician, i've learned the majority of my theory which I've been applying to guitar, handpan, and shakuhachi from you :)
Wow! I have always "heard" this but didn't have a clue what I was listening too but now I do. I was so pleased I was able to work out what the chords were too.
You are too cool.. I have been playing bass for over 50 years (self taught) but never took any music theory courses. I wish you and UA-cam had been around when I was a teen!!! Love your vids!!!
Brilliant! You are such a gifted teacher! Thank you so much for shining the light of understanding and dispersing the clouds of music theory conversion that have hovered over me all of these years.
Ms Gracie you really are an exceptional teacher, you make the oft mysterious world of music theory very accessible. But what is even more amazing, is that you are a stellar musician as well....rare combination to my mind. Thank you for breaking this all down for us.
Merci for your videos. You have a great teaching method for beginners (like moi) so that we aren't beginners anymore. Too many teachers expect a deep understanding of music theory and aren't cut out at teaching at a beginner level. It's a gift and you share that with the world and it is well appreciated. I am working on learning what I can in all chords in every key. I'm doing like you recommend and doing one key per day. I sat through all of your classes and so I know the keys, but masterning them is the practical part. I don't want to miss out on the basics.
You always brighten the day Gracie, I now have a far better understanding and knowledge of music, After watching your videos, Thank you, All the best for you and your family, Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Gosh Gracie,I am so glad I found this and I'm so grateful to you for taking the time to make this. I really love what Rick Beato and David Bennett do but they don't take the time to break it down like this so this channel is slaking my theory thirst, thank you! There's very much a space for this kind of content so keep this style please. You absolutely rock! Thank you.
Gracie you are a genius. I cannot begin to tell you how much your videos help. Instead of learning chords and trying to remember them ' Parrot Fashion' I now break them down into Roman Numerals as you have suggested in previous videos. It makes it so much easier once you get used to it. I did this on a song called Louis Louis by the Kingsmen. It works. This lesson has taught me so much more. I have never heard of 5 of 5 but always wondered where these 'odd' 7ths came in as they were not in a pure Diatonic Scale. Every time I watch your videos I learn so much. Your Circle of fifths is such an eye opener I recommend it to any and everyone. Cannot thank you enough. Have a great Christmas and a wonderful new year. Alan
Ha, after struggling with guitar (for ten years)I started playing piano and then thought "what have I been doing"?. I still play guitar but piano is so much easier to understand.
Wow! You gave a lesson on transcribing harmonies, learning the (harmonic) structure of a (this) song, learning what secondary dominants are and giving a feel for possibilities of ways for coming home (harmonically) to the root of a song. Was so much fun following you on the piano … whish I could do it on the Uke like you 😊 Thank you so much for this Christmas feel along with some structure! Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season!
Gracie, this was so well explained and a treat to watch, in fact! I watched this at around 2 AM 🤪🤪🤪🤪 and found it so easy to understand, but will have to wait till a bit later to play it as I don’t think my neighbours would be very appreciative at this time of the morning 😂😂😂😂. Just love your tuition and look forward to them so much. Much peace and love to you Garyx
Really nice video! I've just realized that the dominant of the dominant is a whole step above the root (C --> D7, G --> A7, ...), seems an easy trick to find them quickly :)
So I guess an easy way to remember this is make the 2 in a ii-V-I chord progression major (in the key you are playing in) so it becomes II-V-I? Cool! I can remember that 😊. And I can do that on the fly rather quick since I am currently practicing this chord progression in all keys. Thanks Gracie for making what would normally be a complicated subject simple. I don’t think I would have realized this without watching your video. At least not as soon as I did. Really love your videos and the way you make theory interesting and easy to understand.
Thank you so much Gracie. Explained in a very simple and easily understandable way. Initially I was having little difficulty in following with your accent. But subsequently i could sync properly :). Thanks again. 🙏
Thank you so much! I love the way you teach. I can follow and most definitely understand the lesson. Thank you and have a wonderful peaceful safe holiday!
Hello , congratulations on your clear explanation of harmonizing scales and in reverse finding back the related chords ( or a sugestion of). When talking about second dominant chords, can that be related to the Circle of the fifth or is the chord progression of mr Sandman for example also all second dominants (B7 E 7 A7 D7 G7 Cmaj7) I was missing also a bit explanation about "turn arounds" On a lot of sheet music papers you see text and chords but i miss the link between the next verse like a Imaj IIIdim IIm V7 or I VIm IIm V7 (and all the possible substitutions you can try out But my most important question is : what is the model/brandname of your beautiful ukulele
You could mention why, in the key of C, that D7 isn't just a diatonic 2nd degree chord ... Because it has an F# instead of the diatonic F natural - making it a major chord - whereas the diatonic version is a minor chord.
Hello: Thank you much for taking the time for people like us. I have a question; what is major third (3rd) above the bass? Do you have a video? Again I thank you, R
Gracie is giving us the love of music for Christmas and I appreciate you for it all. By chance without having to scroll over all the classes, anything on the basics of reading and playing composed music with chords?
I don't think I have any videos breaking that down exactly.. but I could make one :). Can you specify a little more what you mean? Like reading sheet music? With both melodies and chords written on them? And on any specific instrument? Or just reading a chord chart? Let me know what you mean exactly!
@@GracieTerzian Yes. Specifically reading and playing what you see on a music sheet on a guitar. also, Applying a variation of a chord and the visibility and reading of such variations on a music sheet. I apologize, this is as clear as I could make it. Thank you for your patience.
Thank you, Gracie. This video is very helpful to me. I am obliged to do the chords for Hark the Herald and I'm sure this video will help me. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you.
Great teaching! I am a fairly new student. So, pardon my question. If you say, ii V I chords, are you saying that they are played in that particular order? Or you just saying the chords that are involved and not necessarily the order in which they are played?
I;fyou learn the order of the diatonic chords, it's a bit easier. The order of diatonic chords goes like this: Maj, Min, Min, Maj, Maj, Min, Dim, Maj (that last is the octave). Also helps to know the order of the intervals of the scale. The intervals of a major scale go like this: Tone, Tone, Semitone, Tone, Tone, Tone, Semitone. If you remember those two sequences, it's easy to find the chords for any key. This does work better on guitar than other instruments simply because the guitar neck is divided into semitones. One fret jump is a semitone, a two fret jump is a tone.
Thank you so much! You helped me understand two things that were always a little hazy for me before. Now I wonder what it would sound like (or has someone already done that?) if one was to write a song and use a loop of V/V chords somehow and change keys… I don't know. Would be interesting to hear if that's been done.
Would it be appropriate to short cut finding the V/V of a key by just taking the ii degree chord and making it Major? For instance in the key of G, the V/V can be found by looking at the ii, which is Am, and make that Major, so you know that A Major is the V/V in the key of G...
Hi, I'm just starting to really learn theory and your videos have been a huge help. I was wondering if you've covered beat, rhythm, and/or timing in a video before (I looked but didn't see one dedicated to it.) What is it I'm not understanding? Thanks as always for your amazing classes and skill in explaining things.

I'm confused by the V chord being a 7th chord because 7th chords are four note chords and the major and minor chords are only three note chords. Aren't there major 7th and minor 7th chords that can be made off of all of the diatonic notes? Like in C major, there is CM7 - Dm7 - Em7 - FM7 - G7 - Am7 - Bdim7, right? All 4 note chords. But you have a 7th chord in your diatonic triad chords. And, I found that the V chord (D) in the neighboring key of G works in C without modulating to a different key.
