I used to go to San Felipe as a kid. Fascinated by it all. Found ancient petrified horse teeth on the Brazos. Lurked around. Magic. Just loved the history. Have some great black and white photos of an abandoned school house I found in the area. A great escape from Houston.
WOW! Another great video, I really enjoyed this one. Thank you so much for so much great information. I am really learning a lot from you. Looking forward to the next video. Be safe.
Hi Ruth! Thank you so much. It’s great to know that other folks find these stories as interesting as we do. 🙂
I am planning on visiting this site on my #RVRadioShowTour this year. Excellent information about the history of Texas. Thanks for posting...
Tom and Stacie, Thank you for taking the time to share all that information, very interesting history from our State of Texas. This video reminds me to slow down and take a closer look at what ever area I am in, there is much to see. Thank you again for sharing your time and experiences, always praying for the best for both of you, safe travels. don
Thank you Don! That is so true, there are interesting places and stories all around.
And the river down there is very cool. As a 13 year old I would hike on the meanders/sand of the Brazos river. I found petrified mammal bones including a petrified ancient horse tooth. So said the Museum of Natural History in Houston. What a thrill. A friend's father had a gravel pit in La Grange. I would bring my lowly finds to Show and Tell at school. My friend would show the mastadon teeth he found at the gravel pit and blow me out of the water. Showoff! I am a landlocked beach comber living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Plenty of rocks here, but not so in Houston.
LOL Sam! Ancient horse teeth, petrified mastadon teeth... all sounds pretty darn cool to us! And you are right... very rare to find stuff like that around Houston. Thanks for sharing with us!
I saw this getting built, but never seen it complete! I will have to visit after this virus.
We love the videos of texas state parks and your travels. We want you to come to Fort Davis and visit the Davis Mountains state park, the McDonalds Observatory, and the Fort Davis Historic Park with a fort built in 1855 and staffed after the civil war by Buffalo Soldiers, Plus be in some of the most spectacular scenery in the State of texas. We are full time RVers who also have a 20 acre retreat in the Davis Mountains between Fort Davis, and Marfa. Texas.
Hi Kate & Larry! We love that area. It’s been a while since we’ve been to Fort Davis. We do need to get out that way to show folks how amazing it is.
This is great! I only hope that someday Mike and Melissa's Tab across Texas can produce content as good. Thanks for making such great videos.
Thanks so much Mike and Melissa! We hope to run into y’all at a campground one of these days.
Great video. I am a Texan and learned a lot watching this.
RV Texas Y'all
We are in Houston area headed to another Texas State Park tomorrow. We would love to meet up with you if possible. Where are y’all camped?
The next few weeks are going to be crazy for us with family. But what state park are y’all headed to in case we’re in the area?
I did love this video it’s great to really learn something about Texas and look forward to seeing what y’all have next
Thanks Mark! Glad you enjoyed the video. We look forward to learning more interesting stories.
What happened to Washington on the Brazos?
Hi Steve! Thank you for watching. Washington on the Brazos was another important town in the shaping of Texas. We will be covering it in the future.
A lot has happened in the 30+ years since I visited SFA State Park. Thank you for a great video.
Thanks so much for watching! We really appreciate Mr McAuley sitting down with us to share his knowledge of San Felipe de Austin and how it ties into the bigger story of Texas History. If you'd like to learn more about the fascinating, but little known, history of this town, visit the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site website: www.thc.texas.gov/historic-sites/san-felipe-de-austin-state-historic-site. We are very impressed by this museum. Be sure to put it on your list of places to visit when you're in the area.
