How to Flush the Toilet When the Water is Off

- This video answers the question how to flush the toilet when the water is off. When you have approaching hurricanes or ice storms or even times when water becomes inconsistent, you're still faced with the need to flush the toilet. Storm warnings tell you to fill the bathtub but why?
Check the gallons per flush of your toilet. This is usually stamped right on the bowl and comes in handy when the water is off. You'll need a pail or bucket that is at least that size. It must be a bucket, pail, or other decanter with a wide mouth because you need that volume entering the bowl all at once. Pouring from a jug will not give you the volume all at once to flush the toilet. It will just waste your water. - Навчання та стиль
Thanks man. Video helped me perform this task after I had to turn off my house’s main water value due to a yet-to-be located water leak in the front yard. 👍🏼
You are quite welcome. I am so glad it helped. Could you imagine it setting there until the water was turned back on? 😟
Thank you for this video! Short and sweet and right to the point..i also never knew the gallons per flush was the number on the toilet ,nifty fact to know lol
So glad to help.
Thanks so much!! The first storm season un coastal NC for myself and my little dog. I had not thought about this issue, your tutorial was awesome!!
You are so welcome! Be safe this season. Hopefully we’ll be down at Atlantic Beach a few times this season. Thanks so much for watching.
My girlfriend didn’t believe me that this worked so I had to show her videos, thanks!!
Luke, so is she a believer now?

Thanks for this! The ball float in my tank broke and no one locally (I'm a bit in the sticks) sells them separately. I had to order one online that will be here in a few days. I was pretty sure this was how to manually flush a toilet but I wasn't sure. Your video was so clear and right-to-the-point. Many thanks!
I’m so glad it helped. Thank you so much for watching!
We're dealing with Hurricane Ian right now and this was very helpful, thanks bro!
I hope you don’t have to put it to use but if you do, I’m glad it will be helpful. Please stay safe!

When you don't have any water, you don't have any water to do this!
Good point Peggy. Folks, if a storm is coming, you must take precautions. Peggy, we got hit with an ice storm here in Raleigh years ago and were without power for 7 days. Fortunately we had a pool that we’d grab “toilet water” from.
Half filled my tub and wasted a bunch because I was pouring from distilled gallon jugs instead of wide mouth and larger. Gonna have to melt snow soon I guess. Thanks!
Glad our video was informative. Hopefully you won’t have to melt snow too much longer. Thank you for watching. Take care!
My work has the water off so this’ll do :)
I'm so glad this helped. You may just have to haul in buckets for flushing which is a pain but it'll be a lot more sanitary. Tanks so much for watching. See what I did there? Tanks? Like toilet tank? Instead of thanks? Okay, corny pun. But I do appreciate you watching.
@@FieldGuidetoDIY dealing with the texas freeze right now. Do we have to add water to the tank?? Or just the bowl will be fine? I added some to bowl tried to flush wasn’t enough. Added some to tank tried to flush, wasn’t enough pressure to wash paper down.
@@SwimDeeep great question. You can add to the tank or directly to the bowl. But, you’re right. If you’re adding to the bowl, it has to be enough water at the right speed to get that flush. If you’re adding to the tank, fill to the stain line of the tank. Stay safe and warm! Thanks so much for watching.
My pipes are frozen so there is absolutely no water. I decided to scoop up buckets of snow and melt it to pour it in the tank to try and flush it. Will it work?
Absolutely! You’ll need about 2 gallons per flush.
Very helpful! Sent to my Airbnb guest when the pipes froze during bomb cyclone apocalypse 2022 😅😂
I love hearing that. This is precisely the reason made this video; to help folks in need. Thanks so much for watching and thanks so much for sharing their experience.
Have you ever lost water for an extended length of time? We experienced an ice storm that hit the Carolinas with a vengeance in January of 2000. While some were without power for 2 weeks, we were without power (and therefore water) for 7 days. Fortunately we had a pool so we scooped water for flushing out of the pool. How 'bout you?
The water is off now in South Asheville NC. It's been 3 days & there is no water coming out of faucets. I need to learn how to do it properly.
My pipes are frozen so there is absolutely no water. I decided to scoop up buckets of snow and melt it to pour it in the tank to try and flush it. Will it work?
@@BlackPoisonGamez Yes
Can we add water to the top tank and then just fluah or is this better?
You sure can. However, tank lids are hard to replace if they are dropped so folks prefer this way to reduce the risk of damage. Great question. Thanks so much for watching.
@@FieldGuidetoDIY My pipes are frozen so there is absolutely no water. I decided to scoop up buckets of snow and melt it to pour it in the tank to try and flush it. Will it work?
@@BlackPoisonGamez Yes it will work as long as you melt enough snow to fill your tank.
hard to flush and fill up if the water is alrdy out XD
Fill it up BEFORE the storm. Or scoop from the pool if you have one.
No notice. No water in tub.
Sue, would you have any access to another water source? Like a swimming pool or a creek or stream? I realize it’s a pain but can be a quick solution until they get the water working again.
I’m so scared to do this
You got this. Practice with fresh water in an empty bowl first. When you see how it works, step up to tinkle, then finally flush the big guy. You can do it; especially in a pinch.
If it's yellow, let it mellow
If it's brown, flush it down
Profound AF
Hahaha.
I would put water in the tank
Well, it works better that way. Yes.
Can you do it with poop???
Absolutely!
@@FieldGuidetoDIY thank you, appreciate the information.
patty😮 next-door😊
LOL.
i got a problem im at work water is cut of so i dont have no water not even in a cup of water lol
Buddy, maybe there’s a bucket and a creek nearby. Thanks so much for watching. Here’s to happy flushing real soon.
