Although neither are canon, there are parallel universes in where he did survive. -edit- almost forgot. in Dragon Ball Shin Budokai Another Road...Elder Kai gave future Gohan his life instead of Goku. and he has access to super saiyan 2 and "ultimate" /potential unleashed form.
