This is so sad! 😢 I’m hoping the Fish and Wildlife Service sees the light and that they don’t do this. 🙏😔

I don’t know enough about it but they think the Spotted owl will go extinct if it continues. I’m not taking their side but they do have people out there monitoring & doing counts year round including volunteers. You need balance. Just saying.
PS; I know it is upsetting to all animal lovers. Look at hunters, = selected harvesting. 500,000 does sound excessive. Maybe start with 200,00 & see f it starts to help. Eg, how many deer do you think are harvested every year?

Hello Thomas! First let me start this off by thanking you for stating your opinion on the situation!
The Spotted Owl’s population began decreasing after loggers began logging out of their habitat in the Pacific Northwest and a debate was brought forth which resulted in federal protection to protect the bird.
Unfortunately due to habitat and food competition with humans and several other animals including foxes, raccoons, bears, coyotes and of course the elephant in the room the Barred Owl their population has continued to decline.
I truly do understand your point that they are out monitoring and doing counts each and every year which is fantastic but I also do understand that between both Canada and the United States there are only 3.2 million Barred Owls. That being said there are only an average of 1.6 million here in the United States nation wide. With their current proposal to eliminate nearly 500,000 Barred Owls that would diminish their population by nearly 1/3 placing a major decrease in the population.
Also by eliminating the Barred Owls what is the guarantee that the other animals that I listed that share the same diet as the Spotted Owl will not take advantage of the new decrease and take up the excess food and new habitat available?
Like I said I understand you need balance but just for instance, picking out every green M&M in a scale weight is not going to cause the other side to gain. You have to remove more than one type to make sure that the natural habitat balances.
      On another note
A lot of deer are harvested each and every year. My grandfather and uncle hunt each and every year not for sport but to feed our family, widows and other families that live near us. No animal ever dies and is wasted. I don’t think nobody is going to eat a federally protected bird even if given the chance.
