Look like many YT street guys is doing street photography right now in Istanbul, but they really don't know where to take images in that huge city. Eduardo is home there. He feels the vibe of the city, knows the light and most importantly he has the eyes and composition skills for street photography with people involved. Good to see you back Gareth!
Istanbul can be very overwhelming at the beginning, there's so much going on everywhere that It is hard to focus on one section or portion of a place/scene. They will have thousands of good shots eventually, I believe. Nonetheless, most of the British photographers I have seen and met have a more aesthetic approach than me. They usually use the human element more as a punctuation or element to give the sense of scale. Different styles, I would say only.
Great video Gareth, I now feel inspired to try the layering technique on my next venture out on the street. Thanks for introducing Eduardo his pictures are amazing. Look forward to seeing more of your excellent films!
Great video Gareth. Those photos are absolutely amazing. Its interesting to see you chat to other photographers as you seem to get a real insight into their thinking.
@@GarethDanks Yeah man, You're great at filming people naturally. It felt really comfortable sharing the streets with you. And It was awesome to see your excitement for the art of photography.
Lately I've been trying to understand Eduardo's work. He keeps repeating "figure-ground relationship". It turns out to be a term in the Gerstalt pschology. In the image with the red dressed lady, the group of guys and the lady are "figures" distinguished from the "ground" by the light of the sun. Meanwhile, the group of guys are "proxiemating" with each other and become one object. The lady is obviously the other. In addition, "similarity" connects the two objects, since one guy is also wearing reddish. Within the guys, they are looking in different directions, so they are in different sub-groups ("common fate"). One group is looking towards the lady and makes another connection of the two objects. That is why this picture is visually quite astonishing.
Really enjoyed that. I promised myself last summer I was going to get out and do some more street photography and it hasn't happened yet. We need an excursion to Cardiff one day mate. Instanbul looks amazing. Full of character.
Superb film, featuring the international language of photography! Eduardo is a very intelligent photographer, I think we probably all learned something from this film, great stuff Gareth.
Beautiful photos from both of you. I wish my eyes and brain could spot those layered shots. I usually do the camping approach after I find good light and I like those shots, but I want to shoot these kind of pictures as well. I’ll get there one day! Thanks for the video
Cheers John. It’s definitely something that comes with a lot of practice and research. I couldn’t see the shots either at first. It took me a few hours then started to become more obvious
@@GarethDanks you can tell in the last few shots that you definitely zoned in on the technique. You think you’ll end up getting an 18mm to practice more?
Nice lessons of streetphotography periodically I like to find this type of videos personally I learn a lot by seeing how they work in other parts of the globe (travel feeds creativity). greetings from South America📸✨
@@GarethDanks I’ve watched it twice! Shouting at the screen red sign red jacket 😂 yea I’m gutted mate! Really wanted to do something in Liverpool with you for years now!
Brilliant video mate, go look at Alex Webb's work though! Eduardo is a phenomenal photographer and one to watch, he should have 100x the following that he has. I don't know what it is about your videos Gareth but every time you post a street video you make the viewer feel like they're right there with you, that's what makes me enjoy them so much.
I agree! Gareth does a phenomenal job reading and following the phase and energy of the moment. I can't believe he put together this entire video in a couple of days. Also, Thanks for the comments about my craft, I really appreciate your support and advice mate. Cheers
Wow, eduardo is a master, this was such a fantastic glimpse into his mindset. So nice to get away from all the “street photography” cliche on UA-cam 😊 exciting
Enjoyed this a lot. Just noticing there are loads of UA-cam contributors over there at the moment. Roman, Ivan chow.... Is there a photographers discount in Istanbul at the moment ;)
Worth playing a few times to catch the key points of how Eduardo captures layered street images. Challenging method, needs much practice and spacial awareness, along w/lens capabilities, part of your second nature. Vid depicted way too many other photographers at the venue - detracted from the effort, IMO.
@@GarethDanks The shop sign is in Russian and the woman speaks Russian - "Did I get into the frame? Blyat [fuck], where did they come from?" (I'd personally ignore such demands, Eduardo didn't do anything wrong, but it's his choice...)
@@maxbashyrov5785 ohhh so nice to get the translation man! Well, as you said I did nothing wrong. Yet, I truly believe that respect starts by accepting that some people just don't wanna be photograph.
presume Eduardo doesn't want to change colours as he has a keen interest in documentary photography so would likely just adjust hues and not change the image too drastically.
@@daveincork Fair enough. It's not mentioned, but I wonder if he ever considers leaving things in that are 'distracting'? It seems to me that if he's documenting anything specific then it's the mystery to the situations. There's obviously things going on, but the stories are unclear. I thought the red leg in one of the later shots enhances that sense of mystery with a certain oddness. But I appreciate that photographers tend to like things neat, geometric and closed off rather than, say, how artists often have an open and chancy approach.
@@j_a_lee hey there! I think that it really depends on your goal as photographer. In my case, I want to document life as "real" as possible, I don't do any heavy editing, changes colours heavily, nor remove people from scenes. For me, a good picture is done on camera. As I include many elements in my scenes, I feel that I have to make sure that my scenes are also easy to read (sort of organizing the chaos). So, If I include mystery in a shot. It has to deliberate and not by mistake.
