I have a 2018 and while I know that may be the recommended height my pickup is HOT! At that height it overdrives the amp and becomes quite "flabby" with the bass. To set my height played through my SR HH for a bit with all the EQ flat then adjusted the height on my Ray 4 to get as close to the output as I could. As mine is one of the more recent ones I'm not sure if they changed the pickup or not. GREAT setup video, the detail you have provided in these is quite amazing, thanks for taking so much time and sharing!
Hey there :-) Thank you very much for watching and for your comment - I appreciate it! Okay, I see. Thanks for sharing that, it's nice to see something different, hehe. I went with the recommended specs, as a guideline, and generally took it from there - both having played and listened to the instrument, after the adjustments were made. The pickups, and its measurement, all depends on what you're hearing, and how you like it, so that's great :-) They might have changed the pickups, but I don't know for sure, but may be the case. Thanks for your kind words, they mean a lot! It's my pleasure to help out, and even better knowing they've actually been helpful for people out there. Have a great day & cheers.
Hi there, Jack. Thanks for your comment and question. From what you're telling it seems that your pickup is adjusted to its max height... You could try and take the pickup out, and see how the springs are, if they used springs to adjust the pickup. If they used foam, then you could add a little more foam. Sorry, I can't remember if they used springs or foam, it's been a while since I did this video series. Let me know how it goes. All the best.
Hi, I have a new Stingray 5 that has the D and G strings a tad quiet, by maybe a few DBs. EQ is flatted on bass and amp I noticed that the D and G strings are not exactly positioned over the pickups and I've seen numerous forum posts about pickup height as well. What would your suggestion be for getting more volume out of the D and G strings? There are no reputable luthiers in my area so I'd like to fix this myself. Thanks!
The recommended pickup height is 6/32nds/4.7mm from top of plastic to bottom of string [no depression of string] according to both SBMM & EBMM. To close will cause 'Ghosting/slight echo' maybe preamp overload and may be why some can't get to your measurements.
Hey there - thanks for the comment. I don't believe my measurement/spec is much off, taking that the 6/32 is with no depression of the string, so all should be good. I tested the pickup, and preamp, and nothing was wrong 😊 Have an excellent weekend. Cheers.
You wrote "I tested the pickup, and preamp, and nothing was wrong" Great that's what count's. Your 4 part presentation was very helpful; reason for 1st reply I bought a EBMM 25TH Anniversary Bass used and when it came had that Ghosting/echo sound and after troubleshooting found the pickup was too close to strings; set to manufacture spec and it sounded as it should. Also read some comments that owners had some trouble getting it to your spec; maybe they forgot to depress strings. Thanks again for your Videos
On my short scale sterling stingray, I emailed the company and they replied back the pick up height on E string 3.0mm/ G string 2.5 mm spec then of course people will tend to bounce off that factory spec to tweak to their preference.
Hi, I tried getting the pickup to those measurements but it seems like there's not enough foam underneath the pickup itself to fill the gap with the body and securing it in a still position with the screws. It just arrives at a point where the screws start exceeding outside the guide of the pickup and everything feels loose. I went as far as I could but still quite far from those measurements...
Hey there, Mattia. That can and will sometimes happen.. It's annoying, but can sometimes be fixed, but that would probably require a set of other and longer screws, and some springs to keep the tension on the pickup, to keep it up.. I haven't done this, but it might work. What are the measurements you're getting at? Thanks & Cheers.
I just saw all of your tutorial on this sterling and its good! Just wanna ask, if im using a drop C, do i need to tune my bass to drop C and then set my bass just like you do, (trus rod etc) or just set my bass on E and then tune down to C? Thanks!
Hey Dewa Nys :-) Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment. You would always adjust and setup a bass/guitar in that particular tuning that you want to use. So tune your bass to Drop C, then start adjusting it. When tuning down, on both bass and guitar, you might need to go up a gauge in strings, if the truss rod won't adjust the neck as you want it. But start by tuning down to Drop C, then adjust the bass, see how it feels and play, and if you have problems, then let me know :-) I hope this helps :-) Cheers.
GuitarNTabs thanks for the reply, really appriciate it man! And one more, if i do exactly as you said, and then i tune my bass to standard E, is there possibility to broke the neck or anything else?
If you tune the bass to Drop C, then adjust it and play it, and you then later decide to tune it to standard E, then you will have to re-adjust the guitar, because of the extra tension on the strings - compared to being in Drop C. You can't break the neck by changing tuning, but too many turns on the truss rod will do that. Be careful, and come back here, if you're in doubt :-) Regards :-)
You're always welcome to ask further questions - for me it's just important that you've got it down right :-) There's no such thing as too many questions :-) Let me know how it goes! Thanks & Cheers.
Hey there :-) Thanks for your comment. My way of setting up the pickups can be used on a great variety of basses, and guitars as well, so yes, you can use this on your Sub 5 too :-) Please let me know if you have further questions. Best Regards.

Thank you, James. I'm glad to hear so!

Thanks for sharing. Pickup height is indeed individual, so it's all good.
@@GuitarNTabs Indeed, its all individual, just points of reference to bounce off:)
@@la196 - Exactly!
Great thing is, you can try all the different adjustments, and see which works the best.
