Lovely tie Davie. I really enjoy tying the "old" patterns and they catch just as well as the newbies. Great method for the wings. Thanks
Davie You are without a doubt My Favorite when it comes to Tying and Fishing!
I watched my all time favorite classic here today, thanks Davie, the fly was great too. L 👍🎣👍
Daunting perfection Davie in all your flies. You are the Master. Thank you for sharing what is clearly your passion.
Kind regards,
John.

Davie, having learned to fly fish in New York where I grew up, that is a special pattern! Very true to the Catskill style, enjoy your lessons very much. Always an inspiration for a weekend at the vice.
Thanks, Davie! An elegant little fly. 👍
Beautiful find. Old stuff is cool stuff. I love the History of the sport. Those guys you mentioned Art Flick ( Streamside Guide,Red Quill, Black nose dace), Roy Steenrod (Hendrickson) , Leonard, Theodore Gordon ( First comercial tier in America) were all from the area around me in the Catskills Mountains of New York. I always have this in mind when I walk a stream. Even if I am by myself I am never alone. As much as those people had an impact on the sport you are today equally as important. I thank you as always for your beautiful fly's.
Hi Chris Walklet,
Many years ago I was over in Connecticut visiting a friend and as well I did a fly tying class in Pawling...My friend took me to the Catskill Museum which was great and as well we went to Roscoe where I stood outside the Dettes, it's a great place to visit unfortunately I was there in February and the weather was a bit cold...I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind words...
All the very best Davie
+Davie McPhail If you make it back you will have to let me know. Its great that your friend took you up to the Catskills. A beautiful place with great history. I love Dettes now run by the grandson. The shop is the parlor of the house as it has been. I have a video A DAY IN THE CATSKILLS where you can go inside the shop if you did not get inside. I had a day with my brother and daughter and wanted to show her a little bit of history so I brought her in there. Its a different age now. I very much thank you for your contribution to my enjoyment.
More wings for me Davie. Stunning fly. As always, nicely tied and well explained. Many thanks for sharing.
Fantastic find on the book. I have a couple of amazing books as well. Nothing that old that still has an original fly in it. I love the fly too. All the best to you and your family. Thanks for sharing and spending your time answering my questions. As always, a gentleman, and master tier. Sean
I did enjoy it, Davie... thank you.
This is the fly I tried to learn wing tying on... at 10 years thru early teens. Fail and fail again. I didn't have wood duck or peacock eye and substituted mallard flank and two different thread colors for the body (two light and one dark). Still, with the "none" to terrible wings, I caught trout (and upstate N.Y. stream chubs). In the end, I quit the winging effort... I caught trout, therefore I didn't need wings.... =] I think maybe I could get one done fairly right now that you have shown me again and again the many, many ways to get a wing on a fly.
Thanks for turning me into a fairly reasonable fly tier, Davie. I really appreciate it.
Mike
Good find Davie and a top fly as well. That will catch on our rivers Cheers Wigan
Great explanation!
Thank you so much davie!
all the Very Best..vittorio👍
love to get a find like that
Simple, precise…Zen
Just as the Darbee's tied them near Roscoe, NY - in a size smaller than the hook size (a size 14 fly tied on a size 12 hook). With a very small thread head and a bit of hook shank showing right behind the eye. This allowed (back then) for properly tied Turle knot. Magnificent!!! So delicate that the fly just kisses the water when it lands!!! This is the best example I have ever seen of the epitome of Catskill fly tying on UA-cam.
Hi Piedscooter1,
I was lucky enough to visit Roscoe with a friend many years ago but unfortunately it was in the middle of the winter, though I did go into one of the shops and a gentleman was tying a few dries which was great to see..I also stood outside the Dettes house and visited the Catskill Museum which was something special...I really do appreciate your kind words about the way I tyed this famous fly...
All the very best Davie
excellent
This is a great tie. One question though, I thought that the original dressing specified a black hackle?
Hi David,
It could be though I have only ever seen it with a medium dun hackle, though I have used a natural black hackle for an iron blue as they have a slate like colour on the back of the hackle on some capes so it could have been used..
All the very best Davie..
Beautiful
In your opinion, does a dry fly need the wire? or would UV resin be enough protection for the quill?
Hi Evan,
I would say either way would work fine and would last until the hook bent or broke though I used to tye the quills on with nothing and they do last a few fish before they start to wear..
All the very best Davie
i find wood duck or summer duck hard to source is there an alternative dave,or where do you get yours
Hello davie!! beautiful fly...you are one of the Best fly tyier in the world....i'm From italy...you never fish in italy??
can you recommend a dry fly to fish in mountain streams...thanks a lot
Hi Fly fishing 998,
I'm sorry I've never been to Italy but maybe someday...There's many good flies that you could tye and fish with but there will be patterns for the streams you fish in Italy that the local fly tyers would recommend as I would be only guessing...I have attached a link to my playlist of dry flies which have many good patterns which I use myself throughout the fishing season so have a go at any that you feel would fish for you...
All the very best Davie

Good Looking fly
That wrap that you make to hold the tail fibers up looks so easy but mine seldom act as planned and end up slipping to the side or not separating equally. Maybe more thread tension?
Hi Craig Shirey,
My first turn of thread when tying the tail fibres on is on the bare hook, I then bring the thread under the tail pulling the thread towards the eye which will lift it and because it's on the bare hook you should be able to move it into place...The thread tension will help as well as you can loosen it off if you need to, to lift the fibres into place...
All the very best Davie
+Davie McPhail Thanks for taking the time to respond Davie. I don't think my first wrap was on the bare shank. I'll practice this more but I think I have the mechanics correct now. Maintaining tension on the tread on the second wrap seems important too. Thanks again.
hola, esta mosca tiene buena flotabilidad, mientras hace su recorrido por el río, a la espera de sus comentarios
Davie man! Is this the end of the Kamasan B175 for you?
Hi Labeilofest,
Fulling Mill hooks and Kamasan are very much the same and it would be hard to separate them especially when it comes to the B175 and Fulling Mills Competition Heavyweight...
All the very best Davie
