So this LMG fires 1200 rounds/min. 20 rounds per second of continuous fully auto fire. The MG-42 would eat thru a whole 30 round magazine in about 2-3 light pulls of the trigger. Good thing for belt feed.
The barrel does move back and slightly down but not jig about and up and down like say a Browning or Vickers does? The bipod looks springloaded which doesn't seem to help. It would be interesting to fire one just to see why so many US and UK soldiers were killed in WW2?
i fired an mg 3. i can tell you this thing is very accurate but you need a lot of practice to master it. the bipod they use in this video is not accurate, they use a mg3 bipod. you are right it is springloaded but only sideways. if you want to hit something you need to lean against the weapon until the bipod locks and you can keep it pointig at the target without using your hands (they don't do it right here). you also need to dig your feet into the ground so the recoil does not push you away and weakens your pressure against the gun. in case you do not know, the moving barrel of the mg3 /42 is part of its reload mechanism. regarding your question why it was so effective i would say because this weapon realy has no downside at all. some say it overheats very quickly but that is just the case if you use it full auto until the belt is through. Usually you fire short bursts. But when needed one mg 42 can force a whole company to hit the dirt what provides your own side an opportunity to move, so you always have fire superiority and therefore intiative. When overheated the barrel can be replaced within 6 seconds. and in this 6 seconds the enemy has to figure out first that you currantly change your barrel. so not much time to act... the belts can be pinned together while fireing so you never need to reload it. It is light. Can be opperated by one man. can be mounted to kill up to 2km. cheap to produce. The AK47 of the machineguns, we had several weapons completely covered in dust and mud and they still fired. the ONLY advantage the BREN had over the mg 42 was accuracy at far distance. but the usual combat distance never was far enough for the BREN to use that advantage. btw the hits per time ratio of the mg42 was higher than the bren's or the m1918's just because it fired so many bullets.

MG42, Stuka, Tiger I... ironic tho that were murricans that made them famous, thanks to Hollywood. Because, ya'know, defeating those monsters makes you a God, what's precisely what Murrica wanted to show to the world.
One of the best MG's ever made. Saw a interview with a guy from the US airborne who was in WW2 he said it was one of the scariest sounds he heard during the war.
Had this gun in my time in the army. I actually did a full auto, with about 200-250 rounds without stopping. Pipe was so overheated that it went red. My buddy fired 50 rounds of tracers during nighttime. That was awesome. Very, very reliable machinegun, and it almost never had a functionerror. A bitch to walk with, when we went fieldtraining. Very uncomfertable to wear, and it weighs around 13-14 kg, besides your other equipment.
@@jessestinson3560 I mean you'd never fire continuously on a bipod anyway in a war, and it's pretty clear why. The recoil pushes you back a lot, as seen in this video. On a proper tripod or similar you should also avoid firing continuously since the barrel heats up too quickly that way. Edit: also you should probably be finding a new target after firing a burst like that
fun fact: due to the Treaty of Versailles (which was primarily meant to punish Germany for its part in WW1), Germany was not allowed to buy or make any Maxim type machine guns. So they wound up creating the MG34 and eventually the MG42. Thank-you, Treaty of Versailles, for giving us one of the greatest weapons ever
Although the reason for the uprising of the Nazi Party was also due to economic conditions that were caused by all the reparations that Germany had to pay to all the other countries, which all blamed Germany for the war and sought to punish the German people even though all the other nations had just as much blood on their hands. And so the outcome of WW1 led straight to WW2.
James Land Not to mention that Austria-Hungary, not Germany, started the Great War. An argument could be made for Serbia as well; Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian.
It's a sign of a worn locking surface of the bolt. It's an open -bolt Weapon so the bolt has to be locked at the back of the gun, to prevent it from firing. If that locking surface is worn out, the bolt can't lock open and just continue to fire. Up to the piont, where only splitting the belt would stop it. Also seen on the early M60, which uses a lot of similar parts of the MG42.
Bolt bounce probably. The mg42 had the problem of having such a light bolt, and such a high fire rate, that it causes the bolt to bounce from sheer inertia.
Yeah, still one of our masterpieces but have you ever seen the German G3? It's shooting in faster increments than MG42 if you take machine gun mode but you can use it as an assault rifle, sniper rifle and as usual rifle too. I think they even developed a tool for it, thats a little grenade launcher, you can just stick on its top. Best Regards from Germany.
I wouldn't happen to know, German gun laws are pretty damn strict. Thank God. Anyway, the quality of German weaponry seems to have been consistent since the days of the Dreyse needle gun.
Watching this you are straight away brought back to D Day and Omaha beach and the German machine gunners in their pill boxes facing you. The ramp of the landing craft dropped and the next thing you knew you heard this and saw your comrades fall all around you. To be on the receiving end of this. Frightening !
If you look at it's contemporaries, the Browning .30 cal and the British Bren Gun, you'll see how advanced the MG-42 really was. That the U.S. incorporated much of it's design into the M-60's which still can be found all over the world and in the hands of the U.S. Special Forces and SEALs as the Mk 43 is a hell of a compliment to German Engineering during WWII.
+Ryan Taylor The mg42 was flawed. The rate of fire was no advantage. If fact on D-day the pill boxes with the '42 ran out of ammo within hrs of the landings......barrel change were very frequent ......
+spottydog4477 You are wrong. The rate of fire had a huge shock factor on anyone hearing it on the enemy lines. Also, even trough it had probably the best fire rate of it's time it was one of the if not the most accurate machine gun. The fact that it ran out of ammo does not make the gun flawed, it just means that the local troops where not prepared, and as we all know Germany was not prepared for the D-day. The barrel change was not very frequent for those that knew how to use it. And even if it was, it never hindered the capability of the weapon because of how fast the action was. You would just open the top chassing above the barrel, take it out, put another one in, close it and you're good to go. The operation would take under 30 seconds in good hands. And considering that it is still used today as a general purpouse machine gun in many places under the shape of MG-3 I would say it did more than one thing well.
+Grim Reaper 30 seconds??!! maybe if you are drunk and high at the same time, lol. the way we trained to operate it in the field it barely took 8 seconds. the exchange barrel is literally right next to you, laying open and easily accessible on the barrel transport case. there is even a specially designed piece of thick cloth in case you have no gloves, so you can handle a hot barrel fast and efficient. and again, that is under field conditions, when you are on the move with your group. i bet in a fortified pill box the conditions would've been even better.
It's a sign of a worn locking surface of the bolt. It's an open -bolt Weapon so the bolt has to be locked at the back of the gun, to prevent it from firing. Superb weapon. We manufacture parts for the MG42 original and updated versions, belt feed, trigger mech. One of the very best weapons of WW2 with devastating power.
In Germany we call this Gun the "Nazi-Sense", the German Army is still using a modified Version as "MG 3". I was 4 Years in the German Army and this Weapon is simply amazing. But he isn't using it correctly in this Video. You must push your whole Body Weight into the Gun, push it forward, until the Weapon is extremely quiet in your Shoulder. And the recoil is acceptable, so the Shooter can achieve good Results. The Bipod serves as a Barrier, pressing your Body Weight into the Weapon until it no longer works.
+RedBaron1418 Was a MAG gunner (FN MAG) in the South African army 83-85. True what you say. When firing from a lying position the bipod must fold under the gun ie lean into the gun and then fire. 3-5 round burst is the ideal. The MAG can be fired standing up, lean forward. As a MAG gunner I have always had the urge to be able to operate a MG 42 solely for the rate of fire. That said, I dont think that the MG 42 can be fired from a standing position. The MAG weighs a tad under 11 kg's with a 700-900 rpm rate of fire. The MG 42 is a bit heavier but with a 1300+- rpm rate of fire I would hesitate to try and fire the MG 42 standing up even knowing the rpm rate of fire.
I was stationed Germany from 05 -10. I fired german weapons once. Both the g36 and the machine gun. The rate of fire is much faster compared to the m240b. I learned fast to keep those bursts short n sweet otherwise you'll piss away your ammo real fast
ibleedcarolinablue Sounds about right, I'm just picturing being on the other side of that. Down right scary thought, the amount of rounds fired in one burst. Fuck.
@@pispompaisterydy yeah but i wouldn't go on a modern battlefield with a musket, a MG-42 on the other hand don't have to blush in front of modern machine guns.
Sorry, but both apparently don't know how to shoot with this weapon. You push the bipod completely forward until it stops. And you don't give the rifle any leeway to move. The two didn't hit anything at all. It's a wonder they haven't hurt themselves yet. Maybe it doesn't just need a German machine gun. Obviously is a German instructor also needed.
I'm not the biggest WW2 expert but I've been an avid WW2 buff since I was old enough to understand the war and it's implications. The MG42 was indeed ahead of it's time, and it was indeed terrifying for the allied troops who had to face it. In hindsight though, it was a bit impractical. Unlike the MG-34 that came before it. Now I'm not an expert on the MG-42. I don't own one, I've never maintained one. I have shot them on two occasions. One was completely unmodified, and the second gun had a heavier bolt and stiffer recoil spring, and this reduced the rate of fire quite a bit. More on that later. The reason I say the gun was impractical is for a couple of reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, the high rate of fire made the guns prone to firing out of battery. This is obviously not good for the weapon, or the shooter. If a round detonates before it's fully seated in the chamber, the gun will likely be taken out of action with damage to the receiver, a sheered off firing pin, you get the idea. If this happens in a pivotal moment, it could mean the difference between holding a position or losing it. Some other issues is the MG-42 chewed through ammo and barrels like crazy. Thus why the Germans came up with the ingenious quick-change barrel design on the 42. A fantastic solution for the time. Pretty much fail-proof and barrel changes were done in seconds, not minutes. But, the gun went through a lot of ammo and barrels had to be replaced constantly. So, back to the modified MG-42 that I shot. Due to the heavier bolt and recoil spring, the rate of fire came down to somewhere between 950rpm and 1000rpm. I think the MG-42 would've been even more lethal if the German's modified them in the same way and brought their rate of fire down. 950rpm is still blazing fast and still faster than anything the allies had at the time. The gun would've been more controllable, more accurate. It would've been just as proficient for suppressing fire. Barrel life would've been extended slightly, and ammo consumption would've improved slightly as well. Enough to make any kind of difference? Hard to say in hindsight. But the main reason why the slower rate of fire would've helped is that it would've solved the issue of out of battery detonations. Again, it's impossible to know but I wish there was documentation as to how common it was for a German MG nest in the midst of battle to have a gun fire out of battery and thus render it inoperable. That would be fantastic information to know. So, just some additional knowledge that most WW2 buffs probably already know anyway. This is really an awe-inspiring weapon. I wonder which weapon the german's preferred more though. The MG-34 or the MG-42. I've heard anecdotes that the soldiers really loved the MG-34. The MG-34 in my opinion was the perfect machine gun for it's time. It had fantastic milled steel construction(versus the stamped steel of the 42 to make it cheaper), it had an excellent rate of fire(upwards of 900rpm) and it was man-portable, able to be carried by one soldier easily. It could also fire in single shot mode because it had dual triggers. The MG-42 could not do this, it could only be bursted manually by the soldier, which they were trained to do obviously. The problem with the MG-34 was it was expensive and complex to produce, hence why Germany went to the easier to produce MG-42. But the MG-34 was widely recognized as the most advanced machine gun in the world when it was first issued to Germany's troops. A real Cadillac of a machine gun.

HOLY SHIT!! Hearing this fire rate , now i understand why these german MG nests have been feared. Also seeing how steady it is, even on full auto. god damn! you better dig yourself in deep!
Twice as fast as any other other machine gun of the time and exactly why I wouldn't choose it, twice the speed = twice as much ammunition to be carried and twice as uncontrollable. High cyclic rate doesn't necessarily mean good.

Great engineering with the quick change barrel. And the sustained fire mount full auto all day long until the ammo and speed run out. Germans have all the best ideas.
Remember the MG-42 had two possible fire rates, so even if it is slower than you might be used to, it can be adjusted. I think the two speeds were 900rpm and 1200rpm, but I could be mistaken.
From the sound i recon this shoots at about 950-1000 rpm. Many original MG42`s have unoriginal replacement parts in them which lowers the ROF from the original 1250 RPM to about 950 RPM. These are parts that have been replaced when the originals were worn out. Some gunsmith tweaking of the new parts will make it go full 1250 RPM again. Also, as previously mentioned, it is possible to tweak the ROF by using bolts of various weights. The modern MG3 which is based on the MG42 is factory delivered with two different bolts, one light for 1200RPM and one heavy for 900RPM. Many military forces prefer the heavier bolt as they want to lower the RPM to save ammo.
supernovalogic It fires from an open bolt, so it could be the sear retainer for the grouping or a loose spring. So yes, that is possible. The high cyclic rate of the weapon eats the bolt sear catch. Sometimes, when hot, the expansion and thermal factors cause faster wear and even a slipping sear. This tends to happen on historically non restored firearms where the grouping has wear from combat use. Combat retired open bolt machine guns should not be operated without a full inspection.
What beautiful craftsmanship, lots of respect for German engineering. That and the Flak 88. There are some great tools of home breakers out there, but I'd have to say the MG42 has to be one if my top ten. The minigun is a little much, the SAW is great, the M60 is overused.....I think the German STG.44 and Gewher 43 have to be my pics for the top five. I'd hope to have a collection some day.
+Devin Williams well for what it was at the time, being made of cheap stamped metal or not it was definitely a beautiful weapon. It may be stamped on the assembly line but it put a bigger stamp on history.
How is the Flak 88 better than anyone elses 90mm AAA guns again. i Mean the US 90mm M2 could fire 2km higher, was Radar directed opposed to spotlight and optics and could fire reliable and effective proximity fuses while the Flak 88 could not.
+Speed Demon the German radar in ww2 was shite, it was nowhere near advanced enough nor widespread enough to be used in 88mm flak batteries. They used big lights and manual optical directors. and where is this documentary btw, give me a link.

Yeah alright. All german weapons, and I think I speak for almost everyone with this one, have a definite 1 up on every american weapon. I mean, Look at it this way. M16 vs Hk416. M16 being single fire through automatic, as is the HK416, but the hk has a much more stable design along with a very sturdy firing pin and bolt for less jams and better weapon efficiency. M4a1 vs the G36c, M4a1, Not ambidextrous and one of the most common Carbines in the world, basically the M16 with it full range of modifications. The g36c is a fully ambidextrous weapon that has many variants and is also as customizable as the M4A1, like the g36K, MG36. I mean. One gun for all needs. That's just to name 2. And in all rights and respects, Heckler and Koch is a much better gun company
kyuubinaruto222 Using the M16 although I understand what you're saying is the descendant of sturmgewehr 44 so technically no matter how you slice it even the allies admitted Germans had superior weapons just by adopting the concepts and designs.
I can't imagine how incredibly scar it must have been when hearing one of those being shot at you. It was shooting so fast that if you were going to get hit, you were going to have multiple bullet wounds. Running across the beach at Omaha must have been the longest run in those men's lives.
Now just imagine how many soldiers died on the beaches of Normandy after landing, some never even made it to the beach. This weapon was and still is a deadly machinegun
Probably the nicest and best machine gun ever built. Sure we have some crazy "mini guns" but they don't look half as good as this, and for something that old it's quite impressive.

@@settratheimperishable4093 wtf guess you dont know much about a mg42
fun fact: due to the Treaty of Versailles (which was primarily meant to punish Germany for its part in WW1), Germany was not allowed to buy or make any Maxim type machine guns.

1:38 it fires 2 more rounds after trigger released O.o scary
probably in case the user dies
Its an open bolt design so the firing pin continues due to inertia for a little longer, yet its such a small difference that you can barely tell
Too make sure it kills the enemy after you stop firing. Genius!
70 years later and still the best.

+RedBaron1418 Aren't they replacing it with the mg4?
The MG4 is a 5.56mm cal weapon, a light MG, the MG3 is planned to be replaced by the MG5
I was stationed Germany from 05 -10. I fired german weapons once. Both the g36 and the machine gun. The rate of fire is much faster compared to the m240b. I learned fast to keep those bursts short n sweet otherwise you'll piss away your ammo real fast

@@brisonar By... admiring it, of course.
Just have a look at the G3.
Greetings from Germany :)
My favorite gun is the 98k

Nah, it looks about right.
Nah, that looks very right
Remember the MG-42 had two possible fire rates, so even if it is slower than you might be used to, it can be adjusted. I think the two speeds were 900rpm and 1200rpm, but I could be mistaken.
1,200 rounds/min (varied between 900-1,500 rounds/min with different bolts)
One of the finest pieces of military hardware ever to be built. The benchmark for countless designs!
There is something wrong with the MG at 1:36 there was an accidental fire even though he has let go of the trigger, the gun fired 3 more rounds.
That is called Cook Off.
Not really in the MG 42 is 1 -5 Committee trailing or shot normally occurs more frequently on if the weapon can not cool properly!
Probably a worn out sear spring.
supernovalogic It fires from an open bolt, so it could be the sear retainer for the grouping or a loose spring.
Yep
Your suppose to lean into it and yell: "GET SOME!" as you fire your '42.

Muss voll bestätigen. Die habem keine Ahnung,Hauptsache es knattert.
Wenn sie es so an der Front machen würden wäre ihre schulter schon Schrott
The MG-42 makes the sounds of both dreams and nightmares a like.
CHOWDAH PASS ME THE MG-42
gun goes: SKEERRRREEER BRER RVRRRRR BRRRRR
Got to shoot one of these, will never forget it. Such an amazing weapon so ahead of its time.
The Reason why Germans doesn't like to fire their MG42 in full auto, because you will not hit a single target and it has high recoil in burst fire.
Meanwhile M60 Bronwning in U.S: *FREEDOM!!!!!!!*
the germans are the best engineers, change my mind

@@trxiyker7828 why not
ok how about later MG42 made by slave labourers inoccupied territories to looser tolerances more effective in combat: something with that rate of fire is actually disadvantaged if too accurate-strange but true.
