2:35 but why did you "never expect him to dunk" if he was already touching 10'3" when you met him? Does that mean you didn't think his vert could improve by about 4 inches?
@@yeesenchai Keep jumping, man. Squatting heavy is good and fun but these correlations people put up are just arbitrary average estimations that don't take many more directly impacting metrics into account, like how much consistent quality jumping you've been putting in over time. really appreciated learning about Nathan's dunk journey (Great name btw. My youngest son is named Nathan). helped me think about what my results might look like in year 4. I've been trying to improve my vert for years, but for a long time I did not know what I was doing, and my training sucked a big ol' fat donkey dick. As far as training intelligently, I consider myself now just starting year 2. Last year at the start I could not dunk on 9'10". I had an in-game putback a few days ago on a rim that was about 10'1"-2" with no run up. Going to keep at that grind, and this is going to be year that things really take off for me 😤😤😤
John’s training is elite! I took my vert from 19” to around 40” from 2020-24 just by watching thp videos and applying it to my training. I signed up for thp around 6 months ago ago and have probably gained about 2” more since joining. I’m 5’7 and can dunk pretty much every session now even when fatigued.
I wish THP was around when I started jump training, I was 18 and my starting point was even worse than Nathan's. When I started THP I was 25 and had really let myself go, I could maybe touch 10 on a good day. I'm 27 now and can consistently touch around 10' 4" to 10' 5". My lifting technique greatly improved and I've gotten really good at listening to my body. I couldn't have done it without THP!
Awesome video! Inspires me to keep going with THP. It got me to my first dunk, now I need to get past knee pain and keep pushing that vertical past 10' 6"!
I'm a little confused, the thumbnail shows him having a 29 in. vert starting out. That's quite a bit above average? Without training, why would the coach not expect him to be able to improve a lot?
Great achievement obviously consistency is key! Weight room numbers are not so impressive but being so light is a huge advantage (150 lbs!!) He’s built like Connor Dykes or Courtland Holloway… is this a result of a super strict diet or mostly genetic?
Just genetic! I eat healthy naturally and I eat as much as I can while still being comfortable but yeah I’d have to eat a sickening amount of food to gain weight. I only really gain weight from muscle mass
i think i could be crazy like some of 50' guys. Im 6'5 with ab 35 inch max vert with little weight training. I feel like i could get to the mid 40s with some lifting.
OK John is a good coach. But this guy Nathan got so fat mostly because of his mindset/motivation. Probably John's training system was a factor to motivate him more. But the best athletes all got so far by their desire and motivation. Not many have this. I mean all the thoughts are focused on this. No distractions!

Could I join as a Volleyball atlether aswell ? i am 5´9 and can touch 10´6-10´7 but want to increase especially with pain free while being in Season rn and alot further
I'm 16, also 5'11-6'0, 165-170 lbs, and I can currently only grab rim with one hand off two feet (idk how to jump off one). I'm curious as to what's messing with my ability to jump since my power clean max is 195, I can squat 3 plates, and I usually rep out bulgarian split squats with 60's. I'm a pretty good athlete and pretty explosive but I still can't dunk or grab with two hands yet, what do you think's going on??
most likely 1 of 2 (or both) things most likely are happening and the tl;dr is technique (skill issue) as you probably have the significantly more force than needed. Technique is the force multiplier that unlock you vert. 1.) Poor Form. Learn how to jump. Doesn't matter if your a 1 foot or 2 foot jumper you should be very familiar with your body mechanics. Since you squat 3 plates you probably have a good mind muscles connection, but you need to have your exact queues for your optimal jump automated. All the little things like recoiling, driving your heels into the ground, arm drive and following through with exact correct timing really come together to separate the average leapers from the ultra elite. If this is your problem i'd recommend trying to reset your jumping mechanics. Start from square 1, 2-3 times a week starting at 10% leaping power/speed, but really focus on the little timing queues and making every connection automatic while you slowly ramp up. 2.) Poor balance. Less likely but i've seen it. If you have severe muscle imbalances you'll be very inconsistent. I've seen this from the body builder types where maybe they have over-devolped quads and lack of hamstrings or calves to support. Another variant of this is the guy who only does machines, so is lacking fundamental core strength. A weak core will cause a leakage of the transfer of energy from your muscles to the floor and will rob you of all of your jumping potential. Since you squat and do iso leg work like split squats i doubt this is your issue, but it really does not hurt to throw in exercises like dead hangs, ab wheels, hanging leg raises, bridges/planks, corkscrew twists etc for core and more iso volume for whatever is lagging (usually hamstrings or calves)
I mean it’s very average I’d say but nothing compared to how unatheltic some people are I knew a guy 6 foot 5 who legitimately couldn’t touch the net maybe just graze it with his finger tips
Consider that by the time someone is willing to spend 100 dollars a month on training, they’ve probably already done a lot to try to jump higher. Considering nathan wasn’t even at a 30” vertical when he started, that’s pretty rough.
There really isn't any correlation between strength and the ability to jump or run fast. If that were the case you would see powerlifters jumping through the roof and running sprints. You want to jump higher you run sprints, do plyometrics, jump rope and jump....alot. Your ceiling is going to be limited by the amount of fast twitch muscle fiber you're given at birth.
Power lifters move the weight slowly and vert focused training needs u to move heavy weights fast and explode up which gives u different results from a power lifter
Bro is saying that his worst athlete came to him with a 30” vertical with little to no training. This man is clearly naturally gifted. If this is your worst athlete then you must be very selective with who you train.
