This is to the song Hell is for Children by Pat Benatar, one of the most important social awareness songs in history. The song, released in 1980 shined a light on the issue of child abuse. In this , Burch discusses his own experiences with child abuse at the hands of his father and how important the song was in his life. The social impact of this song was a turning point in how we discussed this taboo subject in the United States.
    Favorite Lyrics from the song:
    1. Love and pain become one and the same In the eyes of a wounded child
    2. And you shouldn't have to pay for your love With your bones and your flesh
    3. They blacken your eyes and then apologize

Pat wrote this after reading some articles in the New York Times covering child abuse. She has performed it at every single concert since it was written. Very powerful song in a time when a lot of people weren't talking about this issue.
Edit: As soon as I wrote this comment I unpaused the video and Burch commented the same thing. Guess I should've watched first lol.

I saw Pat Benatar in concert around the time this song was released. I think Alexis mentioned how powerful Pat's voice is in this song. Pat Benatar was trained in opera, but took the rock 'n' roll path instead. She is a very petite, slender woman, and she puts everything into the vocals, and she would occasionally actually hyperventilate on stage and her band would have to fill in instrumentally while she recovered off-stage. As I have grown older, I have noticed that I now get chills every time I hear this song. Burch, I am sorry that you were a victim of abuse. This song was written for you and every child that has ever had to endure that.

Back then, child abuse “didn’t happen”. It was considered discipline. The child, the spouse, the neighbors would see nothing wrong with it. This song gave a lot of children a voice. Pat Benatar was and still is such a champion for kids and women. And such a powerful and beautiful voice delivering the message.

Props to her for this. This was a taboo subject at the time. Hit me hard at the time also, having a Dad who was extremely heavy handed. He has become my best friend. I have forgiven him many times, as that's how he was raised. I used that to mold my parenting style. I swore that I wouldn't be that parent.

There were some radio stations which refused to play this song (& Pat was a HUGE star in that period of time). Some refused because they understood the meaning ....some refused simply based on the title. (Btw, Pat is FINALLY going into the rock hall of fame this year). The guitarist is her husband Neil Giraldo...they still perform today..they've been married for 43 years.

This song really empowered me when I was going through abuse, In 1979-80 Pat and her husband Neil read a NYT article about child abuse in America, it was top 10 on AOR in ‘81, the lyrics were dark but when I listened to it again and understood what it was about, It brought from the other direction from what I went through because I always feel empowered.

Pat has said that she will continue to sing this song as long as the terror continues. I was fortunate to never suffer anything like what is painted here. The reason I'm requesting this song is because when I was younger I was in the same spot as he was in this song. My father left me at a young age I was smart in school but my mother never cared. She was heavily into drugs. Then I was out on the streets but then God spoke to me and told me I could do better. Now I own my own Japansse domestic mechanic shop with a beautiful daughter and wife and enjoying life too the fullest. It's amazing what music can do to you. Love from Alberta Canada

I would love it if you checked out another band called "the Warning" which is comprised of 3 sisters and feels like 70-80's rock in many ways. There is a song called "Black Holes" that was written by one of the 3 girls after she read a story about someone who had an addiction; the song is written from the point of view of the addict. And she wrote it at the age of 13.

Operatically trained with a wide vocal range she stumbled into Rock n Roll, never really considering as a career. It was Neil that inspired and brought out the best in her. Her catalog is filled with great songs. "We Belong" is about her and Neil, give it a listen

This song kicked open the social closest door that existed at the time, exposing a problem we all knew existed but were taught to ignore. Fortunately, this made people gain the courage to stop ignoring the 800-pound gorillas in the room and address the problem.
I remember a girl in my 6th-grade class (1972) who repeatedly came to school wearing long-sleeved shirts and scarves on hot days to hide the brush marks. A few times, she came in with a black eye or did not come to school for several days. The teachers, the school nurse, and the principals saw it, but no one would do a thing.
The family moved away in '74, I always wondered what became of her.

So many younger people don't understand that it just wasn't something talked about back then. I recently started writing an autobiography (that I'll probably never finish). An excerpt speaking on the same thing:
"This would have happened during a regularly scheduled visit. I’m certain there was likely some convenient story told about how I tripped and fell into a table or something to all those that needed to hear it. It would have been readily accepted by everyone in those times, that’s just how things were.
I don’t think I was ever asked about it and of course this was all I knew. There was no reason for me to say anything different. Don’t ask, don’t tell didn’t start with the American military in regards to sexual preference. The same theme was very much the unwritten rule of society and family life in those times."
I never connected with this song back then as Burch did (maybe due to being a couple years younger) but from what I get out of this reaction video our stories probably have a lot of similarities.

Tori Amos also was brave as hell--braver, really, since she was singing about her own rape--when, in 1992 she recorded and performed "Me and a Gun." A capella. Just her lovely voice, recounting her ugly, ugly ordeal. Check out the 1992 debut of it in Bordeux, France. It's breathtakingly moving.

You know, this was a moment of pause for me. It made me remember when music could sometimes be about *real* things. And, aye, as a note of understanding, Burch, I was abused too as a kid - beaten what felt like every day just for being a normal boy, in a severity that would have landed my father in trouble with the law now. And that was far more common than it ever should have been back in those days.

Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo, justifiably vindicated as Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers 2022 after being snubbed for years and years along with a lot more artists still waiting in the sidelines (real rock music). Saw them live at their peak mid 80s as a US NAVY sailor stationed in San Diego, good times.

Back in 1992, I spent the summer at the Point Dume Mobile Home Park in Malibu. And every Thursday Pat Benatar drove her daughter in for piano lessons. What a beautiful woman. It was without a doubt the best summer I ever had, until the rioting. I also jumped into the hot tub with Mick Fleetwood and his daughter. And no, he was not happy at all.

The lyrical contradiction of child abuse, as written and sung by Pat, is utter genius.
"Hell is for Hell" - Yes, as it should be, makes sense, and not at all a contradiction. Total Hell is suppose to remain in Hell.
"Hell is for children" - No, should never be, makes no sense, and is a total contradiction. Total Hell is suppose to remain in Hell!

Wow, when it comes to music from that era, I didn't think there was anything I hadn't heard, but this is a song I am unfamiliar with. And I was a big fan of Pat Benatar as well. Did you know that she is a trained opera singer as well? Amazing vocalist, and a little undervalued in my opinion. Thanks for this one!!

Lot’s of people misunderstood this song, kind of like they misunderstood rock bands like Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, and so on. They hear “Hell is For Children” and immediately think Pat literally means that. Like she wants children to go to hell, because she doesn’t like kids. They didn’t even listen to the other lyrics and try to understand what the songs message is. SMH

Her Husband, Neil Geraldo, is the guitar player. They still tour and perform together all these years later!

Family Tree by Megadeth on their Youthanasia album does have the subject of abuse.
It would be a great follow-up to this.
    Pat has an incredible voice!!
It sucks the the Foo Fighters were inducted into the Rockn Roll hall of fame before Pat; so shameful.

The guitarist is her husband, Neil Giraldo. They've been together since the beginning. A real solid couple still to this day! Remember, she is originally a Juilliard trained opera singer.

Pat & Neil have what they call their Facebook 14. They are the 14 songs, if any are not played when they are in concert, they catch hell on Facebook after the show. They are still touring, but they usually do "Hell Is For Children" acoustic.

Her not being in the hall of fame is criminal. Especially when you consider that they look at hits, influence and longevity... She has truck loads of all. Way more than people like Joan Jett. 🙄

Yeah...it wasn't something you didn't talk about in the 50s and 60s or 70s. It wouldn't be good for you if you did. Pat Benatar did a great job with this. Still hard to talk about.

Quite a controversial song in that the title was confusing to parents. Also some FM stations refused to play it initially.
I was in my mid 20s when Pat Benatar was huge. No female had ever had mixed an operatic voice (which she was trained in) with hard rock.
Her discography is lush with powerhouse chords.

It was the 1 song of hers that I could only listen to once in a great while, because of the intensity of the subject matter it's about. Probably one of the most significant songs ever written in any Genre. Even to this day it hits hard at your emotions and I wasn't a abused child so for actual abused children I can't imagine the emotions they feel hearing it. This song wasn't meant to entertain you, it was meant to awaken you it had purpose.

the guitarist, sorry i can't recall his name, was/is actually her husband. they are still together. or at least that's what i've heard. pat benatar was my first concert. 1980? '81? portales, new mexico. $8.50. me and two of me boy scout buddies "stole" the scoutmasters stationwagon after "lights out", we drove about twelve miles, bought tickets at the door and made it back seemingly undetected? it wasn't 'til quite some tome later, that we learned we had been "caught", but nary a word was said. all three of us ended up achieving "eagle scout'. a different time it was back then.

Another song about things no one was talking about at the time that had a huge cultural impact at the time is "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday. It's about lynchings in America that were still happening in 1939.

I left a comment earlier about a song related to this called "Hush" by Hellyeah. Just watched your reaction again and noticed that Alexis actually had a commentary on the video where she said hush so many times... don't know if was subconscious or just coincidence, but Burch, as an old metalhead like my 54 year young self, I implore you to give this song a listen.

I always thought of her as the female version of Ronnie James Dio. Very powerful voice. Listen to the to the song invisible by dio. It's not a top 10 song and wont get you clicks but it was about depression and gender identity and suicide.Nobody sang about that stuff back in the day. The song was ahead of it's time.
