I've grown up with pets my entire life and still have yet to not cry at one of their deaths. My friend got two pet mice a couple of years ago (I think it's been about two by now), and the only other animal she's had was a cat still living. It was a hard lesson for her to learn when the first one passed.
Of course, her mother didn't help whatsoever by saying animals don't have souls and therefore can't go to heaven (we're Christians, so we believe in an afterlife. Idk if you do, but it's comforting).
