I don't know if it's just me, but Instead of focusing merely on the way their voices sounded like, I found myself searching for the voice who had 'emotions' when they read it. Like they made me believe that what they read is true.
Well you are a woman, you being annoyed by another woman having a higher pitched voice is to be expected. Mean also get annoyed at other men who have voices lower than there own which is also to be expected as an instinctual behavior, because at the end of the day you are competing against each other, and any conceivable edge that you notice of someone else is likely to annoy you.
+Audrey Adams I don't think it's high or low-pitch that sounds appealing to me. It's their tone, enthusiasm and intonation. The pitch is like the number 5 or so...
For me, sound means a lot. It ties in a lot with personality in terms of their tone and how enthusiastic they sound etc. Also when flirting or when having sex, sound is soo important. Appearance can be changed, someone can look normal one day, then change clothes and hair and look really sexy or beautiful, you cant exactly go and change the sound of your natural voice through.
Dailyn Exactly, im mixed white black and indian and i live in france and i can always recognize black people voice lol. Black men almost always have a deeper, smoother and calm voice. I think thats why they excell in music
I think this would work better for me if this experiment was repeated in the United States. I had little opinions on the male voices, due to their accents.
Fight2LiveIive2fight Right, I'm dumb because I like hearing the accents that I'm used to hearing? Pretty sure that this is the case for many people. Sure people find other accents sexy, but I believe at the end of the day, people usually like to surround themselves with people that sound similar to them.
Voice does affect personality. If you have a deeper voice that is hard to project, you speak less, and if you have an easier flowing voice, talking comes more natural. Its all subliminal things
I would like to add that, as a possibility, for the female voices it was not just the higher female voice that was more attractive to listen to. As I tried listening to them, the ones I ranked lower, were because they sounded more rushed, or forced, while the more natural, and soft-sounding happened to come out on top. The same as the list the gentleman made.
Regardless of sexual orientation (lesbian, bisexual, straight, asexual), *what men think is attractive in women* is *typically different* from *what women like / find flattering* in other women. So ladies, don't try to overthink this too much
Holy cow, I literally liked the two female voices that boys agreed they disliked. 2 and 5. Hahaha... I thought they had a smoother cadence to their voices, and a generally softer tone. I loved all the guys voices (though I think the accent is a cheap trick on that one, hahaha) I liked 3 the best though, cause he put a lot of thought into his intonation, and his voice showed charisma. Anyone else notice that the number one choice for the girls was the fastest talking guy, and the number two choice for the boys was the fastest talking girl ?
The fact that they tested voice Pitch is nice, but they could also compare many other variables like accent, ups and downs mid sentence, tone, emphasis on speech.... They didn't even tell us the full rank! just the 2 top ones on pitch.
I was so interested in this study that I brought it up to the boy I was dating at the time. He said "For me it's not about the voice, but about the words that the voice says." :')
The way I see it: Deeper voice = Higher maturity level and attraction. And no, I don't really mean by puberty. I guess it has more to do with what, for lack of a better word, "octave" a person prefers to speak in, man or woman. A deeper octave tells me that that person is more cool, collected, and mature. That's just me. ^^
There's also the factor that males are mainly sight-wired while girls are usually attracted to other things. I think the guys were distracted by who they found physically attractive, which you're right could have been more influenced by the makeup.
Voice is very important in sexually attraction, especially at first impression. It depend of hormones, mental attitude, etc. But still, there is a big difference between what girls pay attention and what boys pay attention at (potentially) partner, and that is the reason why they didn't have the same results at the end. If someone is willing for mutually sharing of experience, knowledge and literature in this area,I will be glad.
I wonder if one of the reasons why the men were finding it harder to match the voices to the faces is because women tend to put on makeup and style their hair etc, making their appearance into what they want it to look like and maybe taking it further away from their true personality (which comes out in their voice). But because men are more unadorned it's easier to see their true selves.
So a deeper voice means someone is bigger... and a higher voice smaller? Why then in opera are most bass voices small men and most tenors huge blokes... complete and utter nonsence...
Not only was the black guys voice attractive because it was deep but because he spoke slowly and controlled his voice unlike the least rated guy whose voice pitch changed just saying it's more than just a deep voice
Excellent video. Presented a lot of new, to me, science. Thank you very much. One suggestion that I’d like to make to get a more accurate data; have each individual make their decisions by themselves. Completely separate from the influence of the other individuals opinions.
Rules of the game by Style and the Mystery Method by Mystery are purewisdom, those two are geniuses. And they're geniuses, those books are based on scientific facts, empirically tested hundres of thousands of times, so I don't understand why Dan Brown is criticizing them in the intro. (BTW, I expected them to be shown among the examples for a reason, and they were bestsellers for a reason)
I agree and the reason the study probably had 75% was because they probably had people with different accents and weights and gender and ages, and in this experiment at least on the girls side were pretty similar in age and accents only difference being hair color
I rather hate that we are judged based upon factors we can't control. Judge me on my weight, my strength, my health, my job, my income, my hobbies.. but on things I have no control over? It rather sucks.
I'm wondering if the lack of accuracy may have something to do with the fact that all the people seem to be of approximately the same age, socioeconomic status, and size. Perhaps if they were more varied, there would be more accuracy?
Lots of factors come into play, who talked to who, what they said, whether the listener believed them, or liked them, or respected their opinion (regardless of its validity) The time of day, or night, or morning, what the subjects ate, if they exercised, their background, ethnicity, culture, education, etc. In studies of the halo effect and general opinions we form of others a very large sample is usually required...usually 10k or more... not a handful.
My voice is naturally low too. No matter how hard I tried to speak loud, my tonality just wouldn't project and overpower others voices. I'm practicing on increase my tonality. You can check out a free PDF from Toastmasters called YOUR SPEAKING VOICE. read it its really good. Im currently using it.
Lol, they were so psyched the guy rated top for girls had the deepest voice; but the guy who rated 2nd had one of the lightest--of not the lightest-- voice for the group. They're trying too hard to match expectations to results. I think personally, the quality of voice stands out the most-- a rich, clear voice is attractive. Pitch is irrelevant.
This video seems to do nothing to separate voice from accent. Accent could very well make a difference, and may even be causing the discrepancy between this experiment and others.
Its not very accurate because the sample size consisted of two groups of four... however the Halo effect in marketing is well known and understood. It effects everything from discussion groups to product design and even end sales. Its also a major issue in political polls and demographic surveys. It effects even the census. Its why politician make themselves likeable even though that will have no effect on their skills, but it will have an effect on their 'perceived' skills.
I don't know about the science or the experiment being correct or not, but in my experience, people (usually females) have always complimented me on my voice. I have a very deep voice apparently (I cannot really hear it) and females respond very positively towards it.
This experiment does not take into account how the passage is read, and other variables like nasally voices. A better experiment would use the same voice sample and change only the pitch.
Is it odd that I tend to gravitate to lower pitched voices in women? You know: the Sades, the Alicia Keyses, the Eliza Doolittles, and that's not bad company by any means.
you are completely correct imo, i got the same result as the guys but I judged it entirely on accent and speech.. for example I find the hostess' voice unattractive basically because she says asked as "akxed"
This series is very interesting but the problem is down to numbers. 6-12 participants and then saying '70%' etc... toss a coin 12 times and you may get 9 heads. You need 50-100 people to give a clearer indication for all of these experiments to be true.
I would argue that mens facial features make more obvious what there voice sounds like. And although I agree that women have to be better at reading the signs, they seemed to have overlooked that part. I was able to tell which voice matched which man fairly well, its simply more obvious on a guy I think.
hmm I don't know if this was fair, from what I know of Britain (and I don't mean this to be insulting) they are very capable of identifying people based on their accent, right down to what part of the country they are from. I must be tone deaf or something?
I'm a female with a naturally lower pitched, husky-ish voice. I hate it because guys are attracted to girls with the cute and feminine high pitched vocals. And if I try to speak with a higher pitch I sound fake. Ugh, I so wish I could change my voice
Well.. Anyone prefered male voice Number 2? I guess it had the second deepest pitch. But I focused more on the emotions in his voice and is pronountiation (e.g. I like the way he pronounced the "S"). That's what I get attracted to. Am I weird? Nonetheless, Charlies voice wins out of all men voices, imo :D
You don't understand what an average is. Men, on average, are taller than women. However, there are women who are taller than men. This information does not invalidate the fact men are still taller than women on average. Similarly, women on average will be more attracted to males with deeper voices than those who do not (all other things being equal of course).
Well nobody for the most part... this show is not scientific... its entertainment. ITs hosted by Derren Brown for one thing... But the point made in the show has already been a subject of many actual scientific studies, outside the realms of 'entertainment'.
Lol I don't speak quietly. I speak just loud enough to be heard but not to overpower other voices. The only problem is that my voice is naturally low. Not much I can do to change it without sounding stupid.
They should've let them read the passage without telling them the purpose of the study; let them record and then listen to the opposite sex and only then ask which one they find most attractive. I think knowing prior to doing the recording skews the study somewhat.
Huh that was weird, I found voice 3 the most attractive. He sounded more well spoken and intelligent (you can tell I prefer smart guys instead of sexy guys) yet they all found his voice the least attractive :( Here's my other votes (in order of what I found most attactive to least attractive): Voice 3 Voice 2 Voice 4 Voice 1 Voice 5 Yeah... I guess I'm a minority. Oh well *shrugs*
That's right. Men can spread their seed around, without serious consequences. But women have to chose the richest and most stable partner only, because they don't have as many chances for spreading their genes. And they need a partner that will stay with them and help them raise the kids.

I don't know if it's just me, but Instead of focusing merely on the way their voices sounded like, I found myself searching for the voice who had 'emotions' when they read it. Like they made me believe that what they read is true.
same here. i seek one with more emotion in the tone
jacy ED Then I'm screwed; my voice is emotionless, it's just way too deep and monotonous
The second voice of the guys voices made me laugh because he over emphasized everything.
while its true that deeper voice is attractive about men...but women having really high pitch is annoying as HELL
True story
Well you are a woman, you being annoyed by another woman having a higher pitched voice is to be expected.
Mean also get annoyed at other men who have voices lower than there own which is also to be expected as an instinctual behavior, because at the end of the day you are competing against each other, and any conceivable edge that you notice of someone else is likely to annoy you.
Alexander Smith lol i know what u mean but i been hearing from guys as well how really high pitched female voice is quite annoying
I find guys with deep voice creepy lol but I guess I have an unpopular opinion and I have a high piched annoying voice :(
+Audrey Adams I don't think it's high or low-pitch that sounds appealing to me. It's their tone, enthusiasm and intonation. The pitch is like the number 5 or so...
Sometimes I really like someone until they speak and ruin it.
poodtang1 That happened to me last night. He spoke and he ruined it

Me too several times.

"Can a person find another person desirable purely based on the way that they sound?" Pssshhh of course! Anyone here watch Cry?
Ethnicity plays a role, as well. I was able to trace the black male's voice perfectly with his accent and I'm African American
Dailyn Exactly, im mixed white black and indian and i live in france and i can always recognize black people voice lol. Black men almost always have a deeper, smoother and calm voice.
I think thats why they excell in music
@@Anthonydu01630 white black and Indian? Damn bro that's a big mix...I'm half white and half indian/Afghan
Pretty cool bro
i prefer deeper female voices, not too deep but not the high pitch ones. not that it really matters though.

Alo Infinitum Yes! Though actually my boyfriend is British now LOL.
🤦🏾♂️
now THAT was flipping awesome!!! I chose voice 4 as my fave male voice too. Interesting results.
I could tell #4 was a brother. It’s good to know people like our voices 😂
There are cultural differences.
Voice does affect personality. If you have a deeper voice that is hard to project, you speak less, and if you have an easier flowing voice, talking comes more natural. Its all subliminal things

Oh gosh, glad I wasn't the only one that picked 2&5 as my favourtie female voices
HAHAHAHA I PICKED ONE AS WELL
as a theatre geek I went for the ones with the best annunciation... so I ended up disagreeing. :)
Anyone excited when seeing Charlie?
Wow... voice 4 for the the guys is very nice... I listened to that one voice about 5 times
Camilia Roe SAME
The fact that they tested voice Pitch is nice, but they could also compare many other variables like accent, ups and downs mid sentence, tone, emphasis on speech.... They didn't even tell us the full rank! just the 2 top ones on pitch.
British people seem to have very high pitch voices.
This should be a proper TV series its by far the most interesting thing Im watching recently!
I was so interested in this study that I brought it up to the boy I was dating at the time. He said "For me it's not about the voice, but about the words that the voice says." :')

So a deeper voice means someone is bigger... and a higher voice smaller?

It's related to what we would assume based on the sound not the actual appearance
I think sound of attraction has far more to do with accent than pitch of voice.
Well, thank you. :)
One of my friends (Male) recently told me I have a cute voice, so I've been feeling better about it lately.
Not only was the black guys voice attractive because it was deep but because he spoke slowly and controlled his voice unlike the least rated guy whose voice pitch changed just saying it's more than just a deep voice
this to me is right but i think the flow of the voice plays a part, the clarity of the voice and accent
best show ever ,,, is thier any complet to this show ? it's really awsom

Clearly voice number one was the best. And the girl behind it too. She look like from the future. Or from a fantastic film :D
I always found that Derren has quite a high-pitched voice. Now, after this study, I guess, this is deliberate... ^^
I agree and the reason the study probably had 75% was because they probably had people with different accents and weights and gender and ages, and in this experiment at least on the girls side were pretty similar in age and accents only difference being hair color
Im attracted to my cat. Am I weird?
No you aren't.
I am attracted to your cat too.
Nah fam you’re perfectly fine I shag my cat every day and we both are fine
Yes. Seek help

I rather hate that we are judged based upon factors we can't control. Judge me on my weight, my strength, my health, my job, my income, my hobbies.. but on things I have no control over? It rather sucks.
i think pitch isn't the only factor in this, but also the speed and tone of their readings
I'm wondering if the lack of accuracy may have something to do with the fact that all the people seem to be of approximately the same age, socioeconomic status, and size. Perhaps if they were more varied, there would be more accuracy?
i agree with their choices. most attractive female voice was 1 and most attractive male voice was 4
Lots of factors come into play, who talked to who, what they said, whether the listener believed them, or liked them, or respected their opinion (regardless of its validity)

wow.. I think the speed of the voice mattered too! like when they hurried it up it sounded nervous :/ but slow, and deep on the guys were sexyyyy
That's a RIDICULOUSLY solid point! Thank you for sharing
ahah the girls listening and laughing had me laughing as well!!!
It's not as much the pitch as it is how naturally and smoothly they're reading it.
Lol, they were so psyched the guy rated top for girls had the deepest voice; but the guy who rated 2nd had one of the lightest--of not the lightest-- voice for the group. They're trying too hard to match expectations to results.

#5 is my favorite. #2 came close when it came to the girls.
#3 is my favorite. #2 came close when it came to the men.

Generally, that's true. It doesn't mean that it is true for everyone, so if your opinion differs, that's ok.

you are completely correct imo, i got the same result as the guys but I judged it entirely on accent and speech.. for example I find the hostess' voice unattractive basically because she says asked as "akxed"
Male voice number 2 sounded like Ramsey from game of thrones, and male voice number 4 sounded like john sno
I want more of these videos. there so good!
Exactly! That and I wonder if the participants were selected randomly.
This is the most unscientific video I've ever seen on the subject matter of human attraction.
This series is very interesting but the problem is down to numbers. 6-12 participants and then saying '70%' etc... toss a coin 12 times and you may get 9 heads. You need 50-100 people to give a clearer indication for all of these experiments to be true.
Based on voice I assume Charlie gets no action.
I would argue that mens facial features make more obvious what there voice sounds like. Its too bad they took this series off..this information is extremely accurate...and voice number 1 did have the sexiest voice.
I also liked number 4! Guys with deeper voices are sexy

@OutOfThisWorldJB No, he said, "It's time to go to Kat."
I'm a guy, and picked girl voice 1 as well. Lovely.
And I'm curious: are girls attracted to Bane's voice, then?
Yes, you'll have to live with your choice.
Love this episode, thanks for posting.
I watched all of these today! Very interesting! I love it!
try the experiment individually so there is no group input for each other.
They're only a step ahead of Braniac. But for more accurate results you need more people.
That's right.
Men can spread their seed around, without serious consequences. But women have to chose the richest and most stable partner only, because they don't have as many chances for spreading their genes. And they need a partner that will stay with them and help them raise the kids.
why are all of the videos uploaded on the same day?
Well clearly for a real scientific study they would need hundreds if not thousands of people, but I think these vids are just to get people thinking about why and how we are attracted to others.
Im a girl and i dont like deep voices... Or it could be a lil deep to a degree but it depends on the feel and tone of it.
I have a deeper voice than all of these guys..
There were more variables than pitch though.. how about speed, stress, tone, etc?
Do you mean Derren Brown? You should look him up, he is amazing! :)
