Using tap water for a reef tank

- Hello fellow reefers !
In this video I show you how I top off my tank using tap water ! I use stress coat that be picked up from any petco or petsmart . Now if you are using RODI water I wouldn’t suggest switching to what I do . However , my tank has been using this since day 1 so I’m pretty sure it’s just used to it. Anyway, this is how I do it and thank you for letting me reach over 300 SUBSCRIBERS !
-your fellow reefer
I honestly think all these diva requirements are just a way for the businesses involved to make more money. I’ve been running a 90 gallon reef tank for 5 years now on tap water, prime, a cheap led light and an old school eheim classic. I don’t jump at the next fancy equipment. Yet my corals are lush, the fish are happy, and no, I don’t do weekly water changes. If anything, I do top-offs and a 30% water change once a month just because I vacuum the substrate. Other than that, I just laugh at all these so called experts hawking their wares to the public and writing the holy bible of reef keeping. Thanks for what you do. It shows the rest of the world it doesn’t take a rocket scientist on a mega budget to enjoy a quality reef tank.
Great!Been thinking of switching to a saltwater tank but the RODI stuff was putting me off. I live in Scotland so our tapwater is really good. You've made my mind up
How is it
tank looks pretty awesome for a tap water topoff tank no cyano no diatoms i can see kudos man!
Everyone's tank and circumstances are different and if this works for you then more power to you, your tank is looking really good so keep up the good work.
Koaleigh Aquaria exactly thank you !
I do think RODI isn't necessary. Particularly with soft corals. Too many people say RODI is essential. I would like them to explain how people have been keeping marine aquariums well before RODI was around.
There is a difference between RO water and RODI water DI deionizer so basically takes out all the stuff you're going to be putting back in stuff you have to pay money for. Using RO can be helpful but DI is unnecessary.
How-is-your-tank-still-alive?!?! You didn’t use distilled or RODI water that’s crazy and your still successful you either have really good water quality or proved everyone wrong and showed them it’s possible 😱
Just because you’ve been told you have to use RO doesn’t mean u have too at all it’s what’s best for you
@@ryanm347 no ik but usually isn’t the water chlorinated?
@@RangeVibeZ yes but that’s why u can buy good declarators
Tank looks actually amazing 👍
Thanks speedy
Some parts of the country actually have very good(low TDS) tap water. In AZ, I wouldn't even think about. Not even in an emergency.
Tony's reef keeping yea I live in jersey lol
Love it man what is that big whitish coral in the middle its huge ??
curious reefer toadstool 👍🏻
Thought so I have one but it's a branching one they grow fast how big is your tank and also please sub to my channel.
curious reefer it’s 120 gallons 40 gallon sump . I have been 👍🏻
If you still there. I started up my 75 gallon tank. I added my water conditioner and salt To the tank. Is my filter and wave maker enough filtration to mix the salt in water?
I’ve been searching for a tank that looks like this on tap water! Few questions!
Do u do water changes? Or only top off ur tank. B/c I feel with running algae scrubbers there’s no need for water changes. But with tap water idk!
With tap water do u think it’s important to use Stress Coat over seachem prime?
And a suggestion- what if u just put ur 5gal bucket by the sump and install an auto topoff so the gradual pour never stresses anything? Thx if u see this comment
Essie S hey essie ! When I had my 120 ( now doing a 60 gallon lagoon so watch those videos) I rarely did water changes, and if I did it was only 5-10 gallons .
- the way I see it if everything is doing great leave it be !
Also, I did not use an ato for this.( now in my 60 gallon I do)
As far as stress coat or prime I have used both . In my opinion prime is a lot stronger and but stress cost still works great for me atleast . I am currently still using tap on my 60 and still using stress coat . Happy Reefing !
Your Fellow Reefer thanks for the tips and quick response! I’m only doing a 10gal with hangon back algae scrubber so we’ll see how that goes with tap water. Subbing n will check out ur 60! Thx
I wonder how my tank would handle my 380ppm TDS tapwater, lol
András F lololol
i have 169 ppm in my tap water is that too much? i live in Sweden
how much TDS is i. your water
freshwater tank guy here planning on saltwater. cant afford rodi. planning on tapwater. any update on this bro pls? thanks. jan 2019-
tmdrpy yea man just look at my latest vids! Everything is doing fine !
Haha I only want Zoanthids, palythoas and acans with 4 fish in my reef tank is tap water good enough for my needs? What do you guys think?
Filipino Masaya I think u could get away with it with good filtration (including an algae scrubber), water conditioner and if ur tap water isn’t terrible. Those aren’t demanding corals. Try it out
Hey man could you help me I got a few questions to ask I am new to salt water
GOON GANG what’s up man
Your Fellow Reefer would it be fine if I buy a anemone in tap water salt
I hate waiting for RO/DI. Anymore, I bypass the membrane and filter through carbon block...no issues. TDS has nothing to do with water quality, most of what makes up tds is calcium and magnesium anyway.
Any updates on bypassing the membrane? We are also thinking about doing it lol. How your corals and fish? Any bad issues you've encountered by doing it?
