The song is about breaking down class/cultural barriers and accepting people for who they are.
unless they cannibals then dont accept being eaten
The song is about taking the opportunity to showcase some great wordplay
The song is about having more compassion and caring in how you live your life. Starting from those power and including all people no matter what your role is in life. Great song with a timeless message
Well said Debbie !! 😎
Think we could all use a little more of that these days ✌️😁!!
You nailed it.
Well said...
Not everyone loves RUSH... but musicians, anyone who has ever played a musical instrument, loves RUSH. They are so intricate and complex technically it's hard for non musicians to appreciate what they are up to. Neil Peart and Geddy Lee are universally acknowledged as top players of their instruments... Alex Lifeson is too, but he has so much competition in the heavily saturated 'guitar gods' category that he often is underappreciated for his incredible skills.
Eddy VanHalen in an interview once, when asked what it was like to be the best guitarist replied " I don't know, you'd have to ask Alex Lifeson"
Actually I don't know anyone who doessn't love Rush. Their a great band.
What's different about this song is it gets right to the point, wastes no time. It's a super simple arrangement and gets the message out to you clear and simple. And then it ends.
Fun fact: this is the most popular Rush song in Brazil.
Love this. Gettys voice is definitely something that you either love or hate, but I’m glad it’s growing on you Brad :)
GEDDY....LIKE EDDIE.....BUT REALLY IT'S GARY !!!...ASK HIS MUM !!!
@@fasteddie777666 unfortunately Mary passed away in 2021.. RIP.
Just like Jon Andersons in Yes
Definitely agree.
If the highness of his voice is starting to wear on you listen to some of the later stuff because his voice does go down over time. Check something out in the '90s like test for echo or something from their last album like head long flight
Before the Spirit of Radio and Tom Sawyer, this song was Rush’s biggest radio hit🎸 This Studio Album was called A Farewell To Kings released a year after 2112 Album
Peart's lyrics are always quite insightful and poetic.
Closer to the Heart is from "A Farewell to Kings" album.
And you gotta love the tubular bells used in this song!
His voice is so Amazing. I so miss the concerts. Some of best time's of my life.
Another reason to love Rush. I was in high school when this gem came out. Their first pop rock hit. A Farewell To Kings was the album.
Yes Brad, I'm glad to hear Geddy's voice is starting to grow on you a bit! "Check back in 3 months" is perfect. In that time, you should have checked out he following songs. "A Farewell To Kings," "The Analog Kid," and "Ghost Of A Chance." You might be a full fledged fan by then!😊☮
Each of us has a role to play in society. This song suggests that you put your heart into your role. "...each must play his part/ to mold a new reality/ closer to the heart." This song has always been a favorite for me.
Lex, the difference you are looking for is "Radio Friendly". It was shorter than a typical Rush song but still packs a punch.
And the men who hold high places refers to politicians all the way down to the farmers and tradesmen. The message is basically saying if society is built on the merits of the heart, we'd live in a better place (or something along those lines). Rush at this time was very prog in their music style and thus weren't writing radio hit song (short songs). Closer to the Heart was meant for radio play.
The album this song is on opens up with a song called "A Farewell to Kings" that prophetically talks about the problems in the world. This was back in 1977, and I say the song is prophetic because it may as well have been written today. It ends with a call to find people to bring us "closer to the heart" as a solution. This song is on the album as a sort of follow-up, describing the individuals and ways they can bring us closer to our hearts.
From "A Farewell to Kings". Geddy began to lower his register a bit. This was more accessible Rush and the album did well, reaching the top 40 album charts in the UK and USA as well as number 11 in Canada. Did quite well as the first single off the album.
Here's a late 90's Canadian band, Finger Eleven, One Thing. And a 2010's band, City and Colour, Comin' Home. I think you two will like them
Live life from your heart. Everyone needs to start there.
This was Neil's philosophical calling for people to lead from compassion and love and less from hate and fear. To inspire us all to live a more balanced life.
Rush put out concept records starting with 2112... The entire album tells a story
This is Geddy Lee at his finest. It's A Farewell to Kings album one after 2112. Xanadu is the perfect tune on this album, maybe their perfect song ever.
In a way, this is their flagship song as its about trying to do everything you do better. Its the driving philosophy underlying everything RUSH tries to do.
Think it through. What does it mean for something be "closer to the heart?" It means, with more compassion, empathy, etc. He's saying everyone, really, needs to do their thing "closer to the heart." The men (and women) who hold high places, our leaders. Blacksmiths and Artists, the creators. Ploughmen and philosophers, the sowers (planter of seeds. One real, the other seeds for the mind.) He's saying, we can be the captain and he'll draw the chart, sailing into destiny, closer to the heart. A hopeful song for humanity.
The album A FAREWELL TO KINGS is still one of my favorite RUSH releases. The title track still has relevance in the lyrics.
Exit the Warrior 3 years now...I Miss him...love B, L & Jack
Great song about everyone making the world a better place
Another great message in a great music arrangement ! Rush never lets you down , keep exploring :)
RUSH!!❤❤❤💝💝💝💗💗💗💞💞💞💕💕💕. Absolutley love this band!!
This was always a fan favourite, sing along at live shows.
This is very RUSH .. Can't think of RUSH without this song.
This one always reminds me of Bubbles playing it with Alex Lifeson on Trailer Park Boys
Of this is another band you can never go wrong with the choice of song. They didn't have bad music.
COME ON GUYS! That was straight forward and understandable regardless of your preferred music genre - if there's real desire to understand.
"Closer to the Heart" is from the album "A Farewell to Kings" and it is thematically consistent with some of the other ideas expounded on that album about corrupt leaders and building a better society.
I might have figured this song out. There is much discussion about naughtical navigation here in this song. And I looked up "heart of the compass" and all kinds of stuff came up. So, maybe this song was more about the nautical compass and the compass in a human heart? I'm just grasping at straws here, but maybe I figured out Neil's secret message. I don't know... these thoughts just came to me so I put it down here for others to ponder.
This song always reminds me of a Christmas song
This song that all of us, from the powerful to the wise, to the average joe's, have a responsibility to make the world a better place in our own way, and that we each have the power to do so.
Back in the past, they used to have these things called.... albums.
and bands thought it'd be nice to include a simple two-three minute track amidst more longer, stretched out material.
unless you're Yes, and release 4x20 minutes on an album.
Fantastic song with a great message
Was wondering when you guys would finally get to this one. Has the musical side for Lex and the interesting lyric for Brad. But...so does/will most of Rush.
They're actually singing about people who do things from the heart something that has long lasting and creative meaning from the heart not from some kind of institutionalized format
Just politicking for CHVRCHES from Scotland song-Somebody Else ! In studio please Brad and Lex ,you'll be a trend setter !
Simply put it's one of their greatest songs . Everyone has a opinion of their songs. Need to listen to song a few times to perhaps understand what Neil is saying.
For another epic masterpiece, which will take you from A Farewell To Kings right into Hemispheres, I recommend Cygnus X-1: Books 1 and 2; there are videos for both, whose graphic novel format can really help you to understand the storyline.
🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
This is music you should be listening to on a weekly basis the rest of your life cause music sucks now a days these guys had some serious talent
Lex nails it again!
If you haven't already check out Peart drum solo it's a must
I haven't heard this in days 😜
First track on the B side of 2112.
Not a big Rush fan but I love this song.
Legends
Brad and Lex, would you consider reacting to Cradle of Filth - Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids? Love your reactions! Keep them coming!
Must listen to some Emerson Lake & Palmer…..another 3 piece band. Huge sound
Neil Peart = Master of the Vibra Slap!🤘
legit reactiom approved
24,000th view! the power of rush compels you!
Great song, but the live in 1998 version is amazing!!!!!!
This song is a bit similar in feel to Rush's "The Trees" to which you've already reacted.
Please play some later RUSH. The Garden ( Live ) Roll the bones. Red Sector A ( LIVE ) Dreamline
Honesty, integrity, use heartfelt emotion more, rely less on just getting ahead, or what earns you more money, respect the art, craft, ever hear “they don’t make ‘em like they use to”? Starting from top, trickle down to bottom.
Listen to the song again....I think Brad and Lex....you will get what the songs about if you view the lyrics one more time !!!!...This song is off the album ''A Farewell to Kings''.....you will see quite a bit about the HEART AND MIND ....from this album and the next RUSH , album, called ''Hemispheres''....Neil Peart , in my opinion , is the greatest song lyricist ever....2nd would be , Bernie Taupin...Elton John's lyricist !!!
reminds me of trailer park boys!
She gets rush. Brad can’t seem to get it. Not many people get them though. But she somehow sees the talent She gets it. She’s right
Prog rock!
If you want something even different and great lyrics. Try ghost of a chance
Xanadu from Exit Stage Left and please watch the concert footage you won’t get dinged many reviews have been done using the footage
Have you guys listened to any Greta Van Fleet? Listen to Heat Above!! I tried to look thru your videos to see if you featured em and couldn't find it
Great song .
Btw i love you guys
How did the song make you feel?
You can never go wrong with RUSH!
Tru dat!!!!!
Ahhh the memories 😊
NO CAP
@@tkg_42 I know that. I was just making an exclamation in all my excitement. Sorry if I offended anyone
@@paulf4802 I simply was saying you’re not lying! Rush 🔥💯!
A great Rush song. A great positive message.
Lex is correct.
The song structure is simpler (and shorter ) compared to most other rush songs.
Yes it just feels like the song was created specifically for the radio. To me this song has always felt like someone at the label told them "now just make a guaranteed hit single and the record is complete".
This is one of the few songs that was pretty much written for them by another author. So maybe that’s what she hears.
Lex knows music
Radio ready.
It needs to be said. Lex has a 10/10 smile. 😃
Rush is awesome.
The only problem with this version it is too short. The live version off Different Stages has an incredible bass solo by Geddy.
Saw them in concert and was fortunate to see that bass solo you speak of they were just phenomenal and one of the longest concerts I’ve been to
It's about changing the way everything is done from politicians down to farmers to let it come from CLOSER TO THE HEART!
I don’t why Brad focuses on the lyrics, since it seems like 99.999% of them are completely beyond him. I remember reading & understanding these lyrics when I was like, 9 years old. It never fails to amaze me that he’s a college graduate. Did he not take any English or literature appreciation classes while he was there?
I could see his professor saying,
“The quick, brown fox jumped over the lazy dog……Brad, what does that sentence mean to you?”
And Brad responding,
“……..I dunno….seemed pretty wild to me.”
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 He is highly literal and analytical, and clearly intelligent. Due to that though figurative language does go over his head which would make assessing lyrics, or any creative writing, impossible. It's interesting to me that that's what he likes to do lol.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 No need to talk so badly about him. Just accept him for who he is. He'll probably never see this and probably wouldn't give a crap about what you think if he did, but there is still an old idea of common decency in the world. And a good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn't be willing to say it to his face then you probably shouldn't say it. He's still learning this type of music and is getting better. Cut him some slack, he seems like a good dude.
This song probably has one of the strongest life lesson message in music. Thank you Neil RIP.
That and the garden. Both very inspirational words to live by
Actually, Neil didn't write this one. It came from non-band member Peter Talbot.
@@mthomasy wow never knew that. One of favorite Rush songs 💯🔥🤘
Two more to check out is Nobody's Hero and Presto. Simply beautiful.
@@kesleycottrell1416 Nobody's Hero 💯🔥
I was lucky enough to see them live several times and every time this song was performed the crowd sang the lyrics and the band played the music. Thousands of voices singing in unison is an amazing experience.
This my favorite Rush tune of all time, I'm pretty sure it is from a Farewell to Kings from 1977.
This is their first big hit single. They went from 1000 seat arenas to 10000 seat arenas partly because of this song. My brother saw 2112 and A Fair Well to Kings Tour. My first show was Moving Pictures. My oldest brother saw them first time Fly By Night Tour.
This wasn't a single
These RUSH guys are like real musicians.
I think Lex approached my understanding of the song: put more heart, compassion, and empathy into whatever you do.
The imagery is interesting (of course - it's Rush). The lyrics begin with an exhortation to those who hold high places (i.e. those who hold the world in the palm of their hand) to be the ones who use those hands to mould & shape a better reality.
And then there are the dichotomies: the blacksmith (who creates something for the sake of function) & the artist (who creates for the sake of form); philosophers (who work with their minds) & ploughmen (who work with their hands).
And then the song finishes with a message of cooperation: you can be the one in charge and I'll plot our course.
These themes of compassion & cooperation show Neil exploring other ideas besides his earlier forays into Ayn Randian individualism & selfishness.
Thank goodness Neil's time in Randland was short, and completely rejected by him as years went on. What an awful way to view the world
Timeless masterpiece of many. R.I.P. Neil Peart.
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Limelight"!! In my top 3 Rush songs!! (with Tom Sawyer and Spirit Of Radio which you've already heard)
#1 for me!!
I feel like "Limelight" and "Spirit of Radio" are good examples of 'meta', a story about making/performing a story.
One of my all time FAVORITES!
"It's above my pay grade" I love it
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Rush is one of my favorite bands of all time. Too bad you guys never got to see them play live. I recommend going to get a live concert of theirs and watch it from beginning to end. Not only is it incredibly entertaining but it is also very funny. These guys are comedians. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Another great 70s classic is 'roll with the changes' from REO Speedwagon, I think you guys only heard one or two REO songs.
So Good. So Profound.
*It is about pretty much what is said in the first verse; "And the men who hold high places...must be the ones who start...to mold a new reality..." The song suggests ways to form; new reality__creativity__mentality__and how to achieve a destiny (work together).*
Compassion from all strata of society. Rush is forever great, RIP Neil Peart the professor
This sounds more like 2112 because it came out on the album that followed 2112.
The drummer is THE GOD of DRUMS
That is has close to a ballad has rush would ever get
This was Rush's response to not having any "radio friendly" songs
From their 2nd album, so early Rush. Actually the first album with Neal on drums. Rush evolves with every record so their sound changes and modernizes with each record.
I'm constantly let down by the lack of insight by these two.
I came back one more time, hoping a simple Rush song would stimulate something, but all I heard was, "the guitar was, like, pew pew pew".
Talk about phone-it-in for a UA-cam paycheck...
Hard agree. "It's different but I don't know how."
"No idea what it's about", "Like, doing things with more heart?", "Sounds good to me, cuz I have no idea"
Like, maybe reacting to rock songs isn't your strong suit, eh?
My 2nd favorite 👍
Try "Time Stand Still". Beautiful message
