To add on, Yoshi still trains on the table over in Hyōgo Prefecture with Team Tetsuwan 鉄腕 (located in Akashi, Hyōgo), and you can still see him in training videos on Mr. Eizaburō's (英三郎) channel (www.youtube.com/@eizaburou38). While he doesn't actively compete, he is still one of the strongest arm wrestlers in the country, especially in his weight category.
he's still the strongest but there is now somewhat a contender, or unofficially the second strongest in japan. his name is 宍戸. the most official unofficial number 2 to have existed i believe. ua-cam.com/video/GZPsDK6Vcnw/v-deo.html. oh man that guy is strong and great inside power for such a big man too. Very very few, if not none, other big guys possess the same inside game. i'd love love to see him compete internationally. And trust me i understand how trong kanai is. he'd still be number one in asia by still a significant margin i'd reckon.
Yoshi is an incredible armwrestler, really impressive. Cvetan have told me they've met in the upper class (Cvetan was 75 kg) in a tournament back in 2001 (USAA Nationals) and had a couple of wars - first one was for 6 and a half minutes and the second one was 4 minutes. They had Neil Pickup and Michael Todd in their class as well.
OH man, I remember this, back then Yoshi traveled a lot to compete and we almost forget that he used to be a welterweight (around 80-90kg). Thanks for sharing that story with Cvetan, these guys are awesome.
Even in his retirement, I'd say that Yoshi is still arguably the number 1 guy in East Asia. There's video footage of him toying with current top Japanese pullers, including 3-time JAWA heavyweight champ Fujiwara. The current -86kg champ Sakamoto couldn't even beat Yoshi with both arms.
Haha, not probably number 1 in east Asia in retirement form right? I’d expect the superheavies in Japan like Toshiyuki Shishido should be able to beat him, no?
@EastsideArmWrestling Maybe. IMO, Shishido is at around the same level as Ji Hyunmin -- based on their respective performances against Fujiwara at tournaments. They are both explosive, but do not possess Yoshi's level of endurance and control. It'd be interesting to see what happens if they were to pull. Btw, I saw a video shot at Yoshi's gym last year where he told the visiting Korean team that he was injured and couldn't practice pull. It sure seemed like he was trying to avoid someone. ;)
well sakamoto is really a special case in the scene. If sakamoto is seriously using 2 arms then not even levan or devon can beat him bro. if you know you know. Other than that yes kanai san is still the strongest in asia by a significant margin.
Yoshi was a beast, an incredible arm wrestler, so strong and beat more or less all the top guys of his time, it would be awesome to see him back especially if he could get back to his formidable form but unfortunately injuries play a part in that.😊💪💪 best of luck to yoshi
Great research man! My friend was at this table practice. He said Yoshinobu's hand is not that strong but his bicep lock is insane and he wasn't beaten at this practice. Adrian Cirocki is in top3 in 105kg category on right hand in Poland. His hook is insane. The other guy he pulled on the video is Grzegorz Grębski, great hook puller. Maybe not the strongest wrist but still very powerful.
Thanks for the names, John! Bogus told me about Adrian, but I did not know that about Grzegorz! It seemed like even in the past, Yoshi had an amazing bicep lock that people could rarely pull through. Even when he lost his wrist he could still hold like a madman.
Haha thanks brother. These videos and the educational ones are the types of videos I love doing the most - promoting other guys and creating space for discussion in the sport. But of course, sometimes I still have to do the clickbait shit to get some views going 🤣
I can only dream of that happening. I know he did have a show match with John Brzenk in like 2016 or so, so maybe even if he's not serious, he can return for an exhibition pull.
A prime Yoshi vs today's Ongarbaev, sure would love to know who is/was truly the strongest asian right hand in the world. Left hand we all know is alizhan.
As much as I like Ongarbaev. Kazakhs are mixed with European genes, maybe 50/50, while Yoshi is pure Asian blood. I mean, all human beings have a little bit of other race genes, but Yoshi is pretty much at least 90% Asian.

why even wonder? kanai san is less than 5ft10. there is no universe he'll be competing with the levans and the devons and the denises and laletins etc of the top competition. genetics matters bro. in the end humans have limit and when the levans and the mutant europeans with 140+kg of weight and 2 meters of height are pushing the limits it becomes impossible to keep up.
yes kanai san can still perform very well. but with those super heavyweight mutants like levan, devon, ermes, laletin, chaffee, george and all the other crazy guys, winning it seems outright impossible without significant drug use lol. I think kanai san gets that and that's why he decided to quit top level competition.
Oh yes! Hiroshi Kotera is his name, my mistake. He won a gold medal in 55kg in 2003, but there’s another Japanese guy too who won twice - Hideki Tsujimoto - 2004 & 2005!
