Thanks Levi. I will transmogrify these to piano and ukulele as I develop my skills for triads. I started watching you for ear training and you really impress me with your exercises.
I started this exercise on April 1st, 2021. 7 weeks later, and I can't tell you how much better I see the neck now. I time myself to see how long it takes to cover all the triads on all the string groups, and it just gets a little better every day. Outstanding lesson!
This is brilliant. I've been doing 4 note arpeggio's all they way up a scale/the neck for a while now as part of my warm-up. But doing all the locations of the base triad had never crossed my mind.
I got this triad lesson from a video Lorne Leber posted some time ago. I’ve worked on it with students for a few years. I think the biggest value it offers is allowing you to comp in situations that do not allow for coarser redundant voicings... but also, massively helpful for targeting chord tones in single note soloing.
I think I’ve learnt more from practising the major and minor triads from this video than I have in the rest of my life!! Been running the triads everyday for a couple of weeks and finally the fretboard is starting to make more sense!! Thank you for sharing your wisdom! 🤟
Great lesson mate. I use a sort of similar though process to find new positions and voicings, but going back to the fundamentals like this really puts things into perspective and helps simplify the process, and by this simplification one can go into much more complex stuff. The random note generator really helps spice things up as well and develop versatility.
Solid and useable lesson....This can type of thing can also be practiced away from the guitar by just being able to name and visualize the notes of the triad on the fretboard
This came at a really good time for me. I'd kinda stumbled upon learning the triads as a good proxy for learning the whole neck in a more practical manner. But I frequently can struggle with turning things into an exercise where I can demonstrably show improvement. This little exercise gives me a way to do so AND stresses learning every key! I'll definitely be incorporating this moving forward (coupled with a VERY SLOW metronome at first!).
I like the book Building a jazz vocabulary for working on practicing things like this with varying root progressions. Nice lesson Levi. I was teaching triads today and I think it’s easy to take for granted how they are key to fretboard knowledge.
To make it a little more musical you could focus on frequently used chord progressions like 1625 in major or minor (turnarounds etc.) and then randomise key centers. By doing that you can also increase your harmonic understanding which helps with everything, not to mention the ears.
How would that factor in augmented and diminished triads? And you’d remove 75% of the visualisation challenge wouldn’t you? Because once you know how to play the progression, as soon as you find the I, then the vi II and V are a pattern.
Great lesson. I actually do a very similar thing with my students. Apart from I call them out at random. Definitely gonna get them using this random generator at home from now on
Is it advisable to practice without looking at the guitar neck? That makes things really tough and slows down the memorization process. But maybe the extra time is well spent...?
Question 🙋♂️ After mastering mastering 135 for maj, min, aug and diminished, should I start focusing on 137 triads ?? I don’t know what to do after mastering 135s 😢 PS: you are awesome 👏 thanks for improving my guitar skills. 😊
137s aren’t triads, they’re shell voicings and root notes for 7th chords. My answer is, you haven’t mastered triads. If you have, I’m impressed. I certainly haven’t. Just because you’ve learned something, it doesn’t mean you’ve mastered it!
Levi Clay I mean, I get why. I’m not really criticizing. I think it’s just easier to explain them as such, so you can have that knowledge as you learn more complex chord theory. Might not be the case, whatever helps people learn is fine with me.
7:17 - "it's a pre-recorded track" 7:25 - "it's not my guitar that you're hearing in that video" 7:58 - 3 guitars clearly heard... two of which are NOTHING close to the prerecorded harmony (which is STILL louder than they are) then we take a step back and ask ourselves... why on earth would the OFFICIAL band page use a clip to promote your tour and sell tickets that (in your own words) "it's not my guitar you're hearing in that video" you'll notice that at 9:34 the guy talks about a "sample line" so when I make the claim that that's not Lucas playing in the video (as in the thing you see isn't the thing you hear...) I'm right yeah? Again, that was the take they PICKED to promote the tour... 11:34 - the two guitars that aren't prerecorded are a mess. Again... not bad. At no point have I ever said Lucas can't play. But it's a world away from the clip he chose to represent his band in a live setting look, I would love nothing more than to make a video looking at the clip at 41:40, but it would be pointless to do so, because I'd be comparing him playing to a prerecorded track. Of COURSE it won't be close. You don't need me to slow that down to show you the timing and dynamics are nothing on the clip I talk about. So one last time... dude chooses to post a clip to promote his live show where he knows you can't hear his guitar... and is then surprised when people say "that's not live guitar" am I missing something?
Hi great job man ! Could you please transcribe the solo of Bonamassa "Blues Deluxe live at Royal Albert Hall" please ? I guess it would be easy as fuck for you ! Thank you very much :D
I only know the triads from the films of Jackie Chan... where all triads are always from China or Japan... or some of those countries where ppl fight doing funny sounds... i guess those are the triads
Those Danny Gatton Teles with the Lindy Fralin pickups have such a magical sound. Love 'em!

I like this comment! I know this stuff works, people just want to move on too quickly!

This is one of the most useful exercises for improving improvisation

This pleases me 😎
@14:56 Very wise words "But can you play something Profound" Love it, Great stuff Levi
This video presents truly brilliant idea. I've got my Christmas break filled up... Thanks, Levi!
Thank you so much Levi. Very excited to get on with this.
That look you get at 7:50. You're so happy that little note rang out like it did hahaha
I've tried learning from books with no luck but actually watching you play them is an easier way to learn for me thanks for the video.
Very welcome man
Fantastic lesson bro; this made more sense than a lot of stuff I've been banging my head against for a very long time! Thank you!

Exactly what i needed to get out of the rut.. thank you Sir!

Just caught this now. Great lesson and looks like the follow on lessons are just as useful.

Amazing! I've been wanting to practice this for a long time now but had no idea what the best way to practice it was. Thanks
Thanks for sharing, Levi.
-Big fan from Taiwan-
Stay safe.
One of the best lessons I’ve seen in a while Levi. Really enjoyed this one!
Levi, you are one damn fine guitarist and very talented! You have awesome feel and phrasing.
I like your freestyle improvising over one chord - keep it flowing.
Great Lesson Levi! This ones right up my street.
I used to do this exercise in the 1980s by pulling folded up bits of paper out of a hat with each triad on... Superb developmental exercise.
Oh yes i saw this in Mick goodrick's book The advancing Guitarist...highly recommended
Thank you levi! This is a very good position playing exercise! It would work for scales as well and arpeggios! Cool exercise!
Thank you! This is EXACTLY what I want to work on right now!
Interested in open voice triads for a future video 👍🏻
Great lesson! Thanks Levi.
I'm at beginning of video, but I can say... this is awesome! 👍
love all your vids!!!!
I noticed the lack of knowledge in my practice routine, and this will be very helpful ♡

I think I remember this from your chord dvd's? Great lesson.
The basic triads, yes - but not the 4 families and the chromatic triad row
Ahhh the DVDs! Probably!!
@@LeviClay Yep! Learned alot from those!
Great lesson. I actually do a very similar thing with my students. Apart from I call them out at random. Definitely gonna get them using this random generator at home from now on
Hey Levi I’ve never seen you transcribe any John Frusciante live solos, he’s a master of triads
I can fairly easily do the maj and min triads, as you said the augmented are symmetrical, the diminished are going to be taxing.
To be fair... they’re definitely taxing on the fly for me! 😂
@@LeviClay i'll be giving the diminished ones a go tomorrow. first i need to draw the chord shapes up so i know what i'm working with.
That’s cool..
But love if you explain what to do with the augmented and diminished triads ..
Sounds silly but I think that helps a lot..
awesome lesson mate... def think you should buy a santa outfit and frost up the bread for the mrs this year too ;)
Great way to visualise them! What about other triad shapes from the low E string or do you feel they are not as practical?
Now we need "The HARDEST Intervals Exercise"..... I mean it ...
great video. I can imagine doing this with arpeggios too.
Is it advisable to practice without looking at the guitar neck? That makes things really tough and slows down the memorization process. But maybe the extra time is well spent...?
Rise of the triad
Do you have any sweep picking for dummies videos ?
very cool! thanks!

Hey Levi. How much u think that tele weighs ?? I like em under 7 It looks bad ass
Add sus2 and sus4 triads and now you have 72 triads in the row. Bam. Harder now.
Add what Beato calls phrygian and lydian triads, and you've got yourself a real challenge!
I think asking people to not think of these as inversions is a bit weird... that’s quite literally all that they are.
And yet... I literally explained to you why.
Levi Clay I mean, I get why. I’m not really criticizing. I think it’s just easier to explain them as such, so you can have that knowledge as you learn more complex chord theory. Might not be the case, whatever helps people learn is fine with me.
Great way to get that country sound! :p Triads
So how do i get the tab for this im a $5 member
help me out mate - it's a long video from a long time ago - do I mention a tab?
Beard game is strong!
Are you going to make a video about Lucas Mann? Looks like he had in answer to your faking guitar video.
7:17 - "it's a pre-recorded track"

my head hurts now .
Kerry King reminds me of Machoman Randy Savage, undisputed player of the century though.
it's a tryhard-triad lesson...if you would?
it sounds like the Super Mario Bros. theme
