There are really only less than a dozen basic stories that can be told. Everything else is window dressing and flavor texts.
I havent seen a truly original film since I was a kid. This is no exception.

I've never seen a short film quite like this one. It's gritty and post-apocalyptic feeling. The shaman reminds me of a Jedi Knight, though no one has mentioned this. These are the front line soldiers, much like the Ukrainian defenders battling the Russian colossus in far eastern Ukraine.
One question I have is this: who is the Christ-like figure in the film, and whose side is be on? Thoughts, anyone?

I see many people saying this should be made into a TV series or movie. I say these kind of short films are perfectly made the way they are, and the fact that they're short and concise actually give them part of the magic they contain.
I rather think it would be awesome to watch sequels to these kind of short films, where it applies. That would be awesome.

This is so very well made. The concept of fighting AI after their ascension on another spiritual plane is unique to me, other books hint at the idea but this takes it head-on. There are a lot of layers there. This is great. And I loved the idea of a muse being required for a shaman to do their work. They need a grounding-rod to believe in them. Also a very nice lore idea.

I don't get protagonists that have these crippling hidden secrets and agonizing personal baggage. Then at the first mention or confrontation about it they basically freak out and shut down. Only then to miraculously overcome years of ignoring the issue and keeping it pent up. Only to have an epiphany and not only get over it but draw strength from it, seemingly at the drop of a hat sometimes. It's so overplayed in media of all forms, for most people getting over really traumatic shit like that takes years of therapy and self growth, if they can do it at all.

Great cinematography. And the concept of trying to defeat a seemingly-unstoppable battle machine by manipulating its "soul" is indeed unique. The actors portray raw emotion well. However, this film is so bizarre, so much like a fevered-dream, that it is barely comprehensible. It seems like a lot of effort was put into mood and atmosphere, but not enough into a coherent story.

I went from like "what is this shaman thing", to "what the hell can a (traditional??) shaman do in future warfare?", to finally "ohhh so that's it!" moments. Contrary to other comments here, I believe this need not full length feature adaption. This 16 minute film is a beautiful complete masterpiece by itself, no need to ruin it with shallow drama. I didn't realize I'd stopped breathing there for a moment. A really brilliant script and refreshingly cohesive storyline in such a short time I barely realized it wasn't at least an hour long and I wasn't watching in my favorite big screen theater. I was really lost in the moment! terrific! Thank you so much!

no, i don't completely understand either...I got the fact that the Shaman killed his family...did he manage to thwart the machine? I don't know...perhaps we're not meant to know? Maybe it's more of an exploration on the Shaman, his motives and actions and not the success of the mission?

    • @vincentbrunet5408

@@VioletMagpie Indeed the Shaman killed his family. But passing on that information to the enemy was intentional in order to manipulate the colossus. he knew perfectly well that it over-thought, from the personality analysis they did early on.The emotions he showed were genuine, but he intentionally lost his footing in order to create an interaction, an opening with the machine. (Notice how it avoided discussion, making him lose his time first).
Then, by bluffing on the song's duration and also by stating that his file was false, he completly switched the course of the mind-battle. The machine cannot comprehend that someone would, willingly, screw up his own personnal file then go right up to it and then act like it was nothing. It is a huge bluff that only worked because of the genuiness of his emotions.
When the shaman told the colossus that everything was false, the colossus believed that he had something else to back up his threats. While, in fact, he had nothing.
It is only because the shaman guessed correctly how it would react that he could turn the tables.

I could sense this was very, very good; very meaningful. The cinematography, superb; the acting, impeccable; the concept - as much as I could tell - novel. And there in lies the problem… the audio’s volume is so low, I could only guess that the worth of the dialogue and the merits of the plot were on equal standing with the film’s other achievements.
I suppose I should rewatch it when and if I have the time, but I shouldn’t have to.

Very nicely done story. I see a lot of feedback declaring that this needs to be a full-length movie ... but does it? Short filmmaking is a special craft with its own set of skills. Mastering a short film takes just as much talent as mastering feature-length cinema, just like some written stories are best as poetry, short stories, novellas or novels. The filmmaker judges which medium is best. And watching a short film is often just as satisfying as watching a feature-length film. No, this doesn't need to be expanded, necessarily. "The Shaman" already speaks volumes, and that's great.

This is a movie I would return to the box office for. Hollywood’s repetitive tropes are dead, and DUST shows it day after day by showcasing phenomenal talents like this. The sad part is they can’t get a foothold in Hollywood because of outright nepotism. I, as many times before, hope to see talents like this wash over the film landscape like a flood as the internet and streaming IS the new box office!
