- The Academy of Ancient Music is an orchestra and choir that perform music from the baroque and classical era in the way it was first intended. Forever associated with Christmas and featuring the much-loved 'Hallelujah Chorus', Handel's Messiah is one of most popular pieces of classical music ever written. Here soprano Mary Bevan sings the breathtakingly beautiful aria 'Rejoice Greatly'.

I'm concerned about the completely missing B section, would very much like an explanation if this is a presentation of authenticity. the A and A(reprise) sections are technically correct though, and without vocal embellishment; the orchestra sounds lovely. A bit of dark sound from the vocalist, but its very hard to do, so props to the soprano for being able to keep up at that tempo!
I'm curious about that, too. There are probably different versions, one version of this aria is in 12/8 for example, but it still involves the B part. I also know that Handel shortened some of the arias in Messiah. Maybe in some version this B part was the victim :)
What happened to the middle section (He is the Righteous Savior)?

The 1980's Hogwood/Kirkby L'Oiseau-Lyre box set was my gold standard for learning most of Messiah until 2012 when I had my first laptop.
Like me, I'm glad the Academy pulls it out of mothballs every so often!

This is a great performance, but you should also try Diana Damrau's performance as well. In turn, I'm going to look for Mary singing Mozart.

What a voice! And she's not exactly hard to look at either.
Great performance by the Academy. But her voice is a little too Romantic for this: too dark, too much vibrato, although I appreciate her joy and passion. And why did they cut the middle section?
