You should toss some movie posters on the video for these. Looks like you have Adobe Premiere based on the text you used for the film titles. Also do chapters for the UA-cam video. I think you tried previously but forgot to do the 00:00 timestamp so it didn't work.

    My Noe Ranking:
    Enter the void

You hit everything phenomenal about I Stand Alone on the head so I’m kinda surprised you don’t have it higher. It’s clear you have more praise for the films you ranked higher. I’m just glad to hear someone speak so highly of ISA :)

Very enjoyable channel. Most films are so neutral in tone it's quite rare to find the ones that can make you feel anything, whether sad, angry, ironic, joyous, just anything. Gaspar Noe usually manages at some points, so it's worth the time for me.

Great video! Gaspar Noe is one of my favorite filmmakers. I got the chance to see Vortex at a film festival last year, it's definitely his most personal, grounded, and mature film to date. My ranking, with Vortex, included would be:
    7. Love
    6. Lux Aeterna
    5. I Stand Alone
    4. Enter the Void
    3. Climax
    2. Vortex
    1. Irreversible
I think Climax is a bit more rewatchable and for lack of a better word fun, but Vortex is much more emotionally effective and impressive on a technical level. And yes I do agree that Irreversible is definitely his magnum opus, and personally one of my all-time favorite films. There really isn't anything out there quite like his work. Such an interesting man.

Noe is one of my favorites and I really enjoyed hearing your perspective on all his films. The format of this kind of video was nice :) personally my favorite Noe movie is Climax the near-improvisational performances of the dancers were so visually and emotionally arresting but Noe’s films are not for the feint of heart. Noe is definitely polarizing but as a director is quiet the industry talent. I would love to hear your insights on other often misunderstood directors.

Irreversible is one of the great all time films. It's all about how choices can quickly change your destiny. If Alex chose not to look at La Tenia in the Underground, she probably wouldn't have not noticed her. It was her extreme misfortune to look at the wrong person at the wrong time. a split second that changed everything . . . Seeing Marcus' mood shift from shock and heartbreak to anger when he is being coaxed along by the two men who knew where La Tenia was, shows so well how intentions and feeling can change from one side of the pendulum to the other depending upon who is giving you that information. I've never seen a filmmaker express so well, and use it as a device for his story telling.

I've seen most of them. Good order I'd say. Noe is absolutely an acquired taste, like absinthe, or Chinese salt plums. And yet like them he leaves a strong aftertaste and a potent memory. Thanks Maggie, it is always a pleasure to here your thoughts.

    Good video.
Surprised how many commenters like "Climax" and hate "Love". Climax is his only film I disliked. "Love" is a great portrayal of how hedonism and addiction can hollow a person out. Very depressing, but the 3D aspect was done very well making it a pleasure to see in the theater.
My top 3 in order would be ETV, Irreversible and Love. Vortex, Lux and I stand Alone tough for me to rank as they're so different from each other, but all great films.

  • @TheEnnisfan
    @TheEnnisfan 2 роки тому +5

I agree 100% with your ranking. I saw Irreversible in the theatre when it came out and it was an INSANE experience. Warning signs outside the theaters, constant walkouts, etc. It was easily my favorite film of that year. I hadn't seen anything like it. Everything about that film works. Everything. It's a MASTERPIECE. Void is absolutely his most visual film. It's not his best work, but it's his most cinematic work. Saw that in a packed theatre at midnight and it was incredible. The only thing I find troubling about Noe's films is that there's not more of them.

Hey, Maggie. Nice ranking! I was wondering if you would consider ever reviewing the 1975 film, “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom.” Gaspar Noé has stated it is one of his all-time favorite films and it’s not hard to see why. He chose it from the Criterion closet. The fact it is in the Criterion Collection tells you of its cinematic importance. It is a tough one to watch and it is very controversial, but given your track record of reviewing controversial films (ex: Irreversible, A Clockwork Orange) I think this film deserves a well thought out analysis from someone of your critical talent. I mean in terms of its disturbing nature and its artistic talent as well as its historical context. Also, the fate of its director, Pasolini, is very interesting as well.
I apologize for the long sentences. I would just love it if you would consider as it seems Gaspar Noé is one of your favorites and it would be interesting for you to review one of his favorites in return. Anyway, I love all your videos. Cheers!

I know that my expectations have been so shaped by mainstream movies that these movies definitely escaped my grasp.

I've watched alot of Interviews, and he seems a rather eccentric but gifted and visionary individual, I find him interesting in that particular way, where a person is unusual... you know there's something about them your clued in on but you don't know what exactly, maybe it's just how crazy he is generally...😂 or his intention to shock or stir people up is above average, but yeah I think he has a way of giving that poison to the collective and attacking the mainstream perception which is always something to endorse

Hard agree with Irreversible being his best work. Throughout the course of the backwards narrative, a world with only men becomes less hellish as women and children are added into the mix. Starting with a gay S&M club, to a street filled with men being chased around by transvestites, then a club with promiscuous young men and women, and finally a serene garden with women relaxing and blissful children playing around. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film so brutal in its presentation that underscores the vitality of traditional family roles this much. Equally as homophobic, misandrist, feminist, and pro-life - as self-contradictory and dissonant as it sounds. Noe breaks the barriers of cinematic political partisanship and makes a film that criticizes transsexuality, homosexuality and MGTOW (well, what’s the difference really?), and supports aspects of feminism along with pro-natalism. All whilst the trippy audiovisuals give you a dizzying headache. Also, the phrase “Time Destroys Everything” carries a whole different meaning when you consider some of the films reactionary politics.

I really thought Paz de la Huerta's performance in Enter the Void was great. Also there's a weird incestuous undertone between her character and Oscar that I haven't seen people discuss much with regard to this film. I wonder what we are supposed to make of that.

Irreversible is my favorite film of his, I stand alone i have as a close 2nd. Im not really into his newer films.....definitely more style over substance.

Honestly haven’t been able to sit through a single film of his. The guy just tries way too hard to shock the audience. To each their own.

It would be cool to see a Powell-Pressburger ranking. That would make a really interesting video. But a bit long lol

    5-Climax
    6-lUX aeterna (i didn't like it much so i will re-watch)

I love climax for its trust in act over cgi but irreversible is my #1...and yes it's horror to me (1972 last house on the left or 1977 I spit on your grave)

I don’t see Irreversible as a movie about rape, I see Irreversible as a movie about rape culture and how men talk about and treat women, and how other films have depicted violence towards women in the past, which kinda makes the claims that the movie glorifies violence towards women (most of these claims coming from people who love the movies that Irreversible is critiquing) kinda crazy

The scariest scene in Irreversible is Monica Bellucci rubbing her belly in the park. After all that we’ve seen before , what should be beautiful becomes completely devastating.

LOVE was…different. Felt like it was pushing to be edgy just by including all that sex, relationship drama, etc.

Climax was a mess. I'll never watch it again. I like his view and originality, but I never want to watch his movies a second time. Except maybe INTO THE VOID.

I actually think I Stand Alone is his best. While not as technically polished or grandiose as his later films, I think it is his most narratively complex and affecting work. Admittedly, it has a strong male perspective, so I can see why it would appeal to men more than women, whereas Irreversible has that strong female side of the story that would make it more appealing to you, Maggie. No doubt Love is his worst. Awful film.
