Perhaps the single most underrated country song of all time! BJS simply kicks the crap out of it period. (All pics taken from Google Images...right on)
thanks for posting this! i saw billy joe live in the late 90's and during the break i shook hands with him and asked if he would play this song. he looked me straight in the eye and said, "naw, my drummer don't know it." god bless billy joe shaver.
Thank you Norm Macdonald for showing me Billy Joe Shaver. Don't know how he flew under my radar, but I'm sure glad I found him. Better late than never.
Billy Joe has been one of the favourites in my music collection, going to be missed but not forgotten, music from the legends of country and rock are fading out. RIP BJS
RIP, Mr Shaver. Had me a ragged old truck, well sorta. '72 Chev c 10 step side. 350 q jet three speed Bought in '85. Neighbor called it "Old Faithful'. Donated in '12 or so. Paving project,,,,60 series tires were rotted but it still ran. Good cause for the donation (Breast Cancer Survivors, in my late Mother In Law 's name). I miss it and her all the time oh, story, turning 40 and not happy. Take the truck to my old school with my 10 speed, Wheelies across 3 basketball courts onto the grass, like i did as a kid. Wanted to see if the SF Guitar Center was open,,,,stoplight derby with a Mustang from then. Chev jumped ! Glad it did. Got me out of trouble when some gal lost her ear ring backing and gave me a hug when i found it. Boy friend was running sound. Johnny Winter ",,,i can tell he's a quick tempered jealous man". He left. called her,,,,she said i should leave. I did, passed him and his Harley on HWY 1. Good Night ;)
I'd really like to thank all those who have taken time to comment, most of which very much in the positive. I put this vid together when recovering from a surgery and thus, had the time. Gonna have to try and put another one together I suppose! Just so damn good to know how many Shaver fans are out there. He won't be with us forever, so need to appreciate him even more now!
Billy Joe Shaver is the King of Texas Country & a brother outlaw at the cross. God Bless him and all y'all for spreadin' the word. He's a man Ive always admired, even when we were gettin' wasted over on the west end here in NashVegas back in the 70's. The last time I saw him was a couple years back with my other bro, Earl Clark at the Fiddle & Steel here in Printers Alley. He let go of the two young beauties hanging on him and gave me that smile & a Billy Joe bear hug.
He was an outlaw before Willie and Waylon ever heard the name, I was listening to him and my friend's were like, who's that, I cried the day he died, it really hit me hard,RIP my brother
I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite comedian #normmacdonald introduced me to your beautiful music Mr. Shaver. I have all the faith you both are in the lords kingdom. RIP fellas.. This isn't the world yall wanted to live in and I suppose it was time to move on. GODSPEED
Billy Joe gave a tape to see if I wanted to record anything on it. This song was on it. Of course I wanted to record them all but didn't have the money. I'm grateful I got to meet and talk with this legend on numerous occasions. And just as grateful I got to watch Eddy play up close and personal. RIP Eddy.
NOW,IT DON'T GET NO MORE COUNTRIER THAN BILLY JOE SHAVER! Thanks For Posting! I Agree With Everyone This Is What Kind Of Country Music Should Be On Radio Because This Is"Real Country".
ole Billy Joe sure tells like it is he is the real deal these new (so called )country stars need to get educated on what real country music is not that crap they play now!!!!!
Thanks for the excellent post- ever since XM America was killed off by stupid sirius, I can't get great songs like this anymore! Please keep them coming, and keep the GREAT country music alive!! GySgt Dan Jones Ubaydi Iraq
Thank you for making this, FrontRowSeatNow. Although it made my tears roll down it also made me so glad to be a Texan and to have gotten to see him so many times. I love his music and downhome lyrics, and the man himself. 2020 has been such a difficult year. We have lost so many amazing musicians and it just breaks my heart. But his music will live on forever.
billy joe is one of the last links to the ole country you listen to with your daddy drivin down the ol road an your daddy was sippin on a cold one, damn i wish i could go back , but the only bad part back then i couldnt have a cold one LOL !

As well as the rest of his music... Rest in peace Brother Billy
Kinda funny Billy Joe said he wanted Waylon to sing his songs because Waylon was a better singer.Nothin against Waylon but i would much rather hear Billy Joe.Theres an honesty he has that just can't be beat
Couldn't have said it better adj709, glad you liked it. I tell ya, there are a few good ones out there if you look hard enough (Stoney LaRue, Jason Boland) but do they get any radio play? Course not...especially where I'm at in Boston. Anyway, yeah to me this is almost the 'perfect' country song. It's pretty easy to see and hear what Waylon did and why Old Hoss went to Billy Joe so many times on his records. Billy Joe is a legend period.
Damn! I love Johnny Paychecks version of this with the funky base line......but heck I really feel this version....gonna have to find some of his albums he's writen some real classics.

Back when country songs were actually about something other than dirt roads, trucks, cheap beer and bonfires.
+scockery Probably because he wrote it.
in case you couldn't read truck is in the title
in case you couldn't read truck is in the title

Mamataco Paco Technically this song isn't really about a truck.

RIP Billy Joe Shaver, love ya Billy, keeping ya in my prayers
Every word every note, is held to the very end, it’s so laid-back you feel you gotta lose the rhythm and it never does. It’s so pure I love this shit.
The best and king of outlaw country music, rest in peace Billy Joe❤
Pure damn good music no matter what genre.
Rest in peace, outlaw.
I think this just may be my favorite country song of all time!
This here, folks, is real country music.

It is old school country bar music and there ain't nothin better
Thomas Floyd true
Billy Joe Shaver ranks right up there with the immortal Ernest Tub and Hank Williams.

And if Hank lived to be in his 50s he would've been singing Billy Joe's songs

Billy Joe gave a tape to see if I wanted to record anything on it. This song was on it. Of course I wanted to record them all but didn't have the money.
