Years ago, in university, I saw a fossil of a dragonfly with a wingspan of well over 4 feet. I don't think it was the largest specimen by any means, but still very impressive.

Wow...great graphics. Great narration too. I live in SE Queensland, Australia. Most of this looks like my back yard and general area - swamps, giant ferns, tall trees, bracken...everything minus the giant dragonflies...thankfully!
I think they are looking at the wrong space. There's no way early pterosaurs could compete with giant flying insects in the air. The pressure had to either happen in the nymph stage or perhaps at night when the insects were cold and sluggish. The meganeura went extinct too early to blame endotherms, but the rise of warm blooded animals could help explain the later extinctions.

Insects, arachnids, and other arthropods without lungs could get larger because more oxygen could diffuse passively into their bodies through their tracheal orifices. When global geochemistry changed and more oxygen was bound into minerals and thus the oxygen content of the atmosphere fell, the giant bugs had to get smaller. No?
Interesting that information is given about the increased oxygen content in the atmosphere, but not about the CO2 content. (Carbon 1000 ppm - today 415 ppm)
Arthropleura was a giant herbivorous millipede, it had no venomous fangs like modern centipedes. That aside, the giant flying insects might have been able to adapt to lower oxygen levels, but when vertebrates were able to hunt them in the air, size became a disadvantage to survival.

I find it very hard to believe that the first gliding predators could adjust their direction quickly enough to catch very nimble flying insects which would have been able to adjust directions very quickly. It would have needed to be a surprise for them to catch these insects given their almost 360o vision. While the insect could easily increase their height from the ground the gliding reptile could only decrease its height except in cases of updrafts.
Then the air was paid than now and gravity was three times greater. Therefore, the air in the tissues of the body was supplied at such a pressure more easily.

Сказать, что "деревья накапливали углекислый газ и выделяли...", все равно что сказать "Вадим накапливает еду и выделяет...". Никаких доисторических птиц во времена гигантских насекомых не было еще и в проекте, предки птиц появились на сотню миллионов лет позднее.

It's not complicated, they didn't dissappear they just shrunk in size, due to the changes in gravity. Let me explain, every year the earth increases in size by 0.1 mm per year multiply that by 350 million and you get 3500 meters. The earth's current radius is 6371km. If you take the growth rate from he radius you get 5921km. At this point the curve on the earth is sharper. So even though the pull is the same, the throw fro the spin would be greater, resulting in a much lower gravitational pull. This means that it would be easier for larger insects to fly, and for dinosaurs to grow larger. As hearts don't need to pump as much. That's my theory anyway
Insects, got smaller, dinosaurs got smaller, mammals got smaller, trees got smaller. Earth got larger, the mass got higher, the surface gravity got higher. The materials to make critters remained the same.
Unless buried in mud without any chance of escape, from huge amount of water to cover the land. Or you have other explanation to how something gets completely covered in mud and die.

Lol, it would probably effect mammals significantly differently because of how we breathe. Our bones would probably become hollow in order to compensate for how much oxygen our bodies would be required to process, which would either shrink us, or cause us to become bigger but more brittle.
It's very simple, less oxygen and less atmospheric pressure, insects breathe through their exoskeletons. Surface area vs available oxygen whose effectiveness is increased/decreased based on atmospheric pressure determines rate of utilized oxygen.

Very simplistic concentration on flying fossils. You are stuck trying to make up a story with only half the life history. How about what happened to the aquatic larval/nymphal stages? Fish were probably more important in the decline of very large insects than any aerial competition or predation. Relatively large dragonflies are still around and few birds make them regular prey items - mostly they catch them when they are resting in early morning. Fish, however, can eliminate the larval stages in many bodies of water. Organic matter does not need to be from angiosperms to burn up aquatic oxygen - that is just silly.

It seemed almost as though it climbed to the top of the trunk to meet its demise. A water world for it would be less impelling, but would be easier to propel forward. Dragonflies with huge wings can propel with ease. It starts its life in water. And stays near water throughout its life. The pede would drown. And modern pedes though could be big are much smaller than this ancient one. The size of larger modern dragonflies are not that much smaller than the meganeura. The modern centipedes are not herbivores and contain minor toxins. Modern dragonflies are still friendly to have around us. Should one land on you just hold still. It's probably taking a needed rest.

But it doesn´t mean any turning into new species. Even the Carcharodon carcharias is just a miniature of C. megalodon, both the same species. The trout of lanes is way smaller than members of the same species living in rivers. Although certain branches of a species may become extinct the species itself will live on. For example Although many mammals have become extinct were still have many types of mammals, as with reptiles, even apes, us being included, survive Although many types of apes, including many hominids, such as denisovians, and Neanderthals, for example. It would appear the word extinct seems like is misleading. Some species aren't extinct only certain branches actually went extinct where as others simply evolved.
Oxygen is not going to make "air" extremely flammable. "Air" doesn't burn. There is no fuel in "air" and thus it cannot be flammable. It may have supported combustion more readily (e.g. made fires burn somewhat more fiercely), but that still doesn't make the air any more or less "flammable".

It’s interesting overall. I was a bit disappointed that the use of oxygen investigation only involved an X-ray. I was hoping they would set up an biosphere with lots of oxygen and see if the grasshoppers grew larger in each generation.

That was done with roaches - they did get bigger, but not that much bigger - they don't have lungs.

It's not complicated, they didn't dissappear they just shrunk in size, due to the changes in gravity. Let me explain, every year the earth increases in size by 0.1 mm per year multiply that by 350 million and you get 3500 meters. The earth's current radius is 6371km. If you take the growth rate from he radius you get 5921km. At this point the curve on the earth is sharper. So even though the pull is the same, the throw fro the spin would be greater, resulting in a much lower gravitational pull. This means that it would be easier for larger insects to fly, and for dinosaurs to grow larger. As hearts don't need to pump as much. That's my theory anyway

Insects, got smaller, dinosaurs got smaller, mammals got smaller, trees got smaller. Earth got larger, the mass got higher, the surface gravity got higher. The materials to make critters remained the same.
Unless buried in mud without any chance of escape, from huge amount of water to cover the land. Or you have other explanation to how something gets completely covered in mud and die.

Lol, it would probably effect mammals significantly differently because of how we breathe. Our bones would probably become hollow in order to compensate for how much oxygen our bodies would be required to process, which would either shrink us, or cause us to become bigger but more brittle.

Very simplistic concentration on flying fossils. You are stuck trying to make up a story with only half the life history. How about what happened to the aquatic larval/nymphal stages? Fish were probably more important in the decline of very large insects than any aerial competition or predation. Relatively large dragonflies are still around and few birds make them regular prey items - mostly they catch them when they are resting in early morning. Fish, however, can eliminate the larval stages in many bodies of water. Organic matter does not need to be from angiosperms to burn up aquatic oxygen - that is just silly.

I felt a little bad for that monstrous sized pede that was knocked off the tree trunk struck by lightning. It seemed almost as though it climbed to the top of the trunk to meet its demise. A water world for it would be less impelling, but would be easier to propel forward.
Dragonflies with huge wings can propel with ease. It starts its life in water. And stays near water throughout its life.
The pede would drown. And modern pedes though could be big are much smaller than this ancient one. The size of larger modern dragonflies are not that much smaller than the meganeura. The modern centipedes are not herbivores and contain minor toxins. Modern dragonflies are still friendly to have around us. Should one land on you just hold still. It's probably taking a needed rest.

There is a mistake: humid air is less dense than dry air, not more dense, unless there is mist of course. That's because water is a lighter molecule than oxygen or nitrogen.

I don't think slowly decreasing oxygen levels made large gene pools go extinct, the pressure isn't rapid enough to cause a replication pinch off, rather favoring smaller more optimized builds gradually selecting against large size.
But it doesn´t mean any turning into new species. Even the Carcharodon carcharias is just a miniature of C. megalodon, both the same species. The trout of lanes is way smaller than members of the same species living in rivers. The mechanism behind is called the "island population", just adaption to altered environment, still within the same species. It is the altered phenotype but not the genome.
These Insects didn't become extinct, but adapted to the changing environment and evolved and adapted to the lower oxygen levels as well as a less dense atmosphere. Because Insects breath through their skin, along with having a more primitive type of lungs that look and function a furnace bellows. The bigger an insect is the more oxygen they require, simple deduction. Many people don't realize that dinosaurs didn't go extinct either, but evolved into the alligators, crocodiles, kimono dragons, lizards, snakes, frogs, and finally, not realized until recent fossils were discovered, birds. Yes birds take a good look at an ostrich for example. There were fossils discovered of dinosaurs with feathers as their scales began to evolve into feathers one of the reasons for dinosaurs to become smaller was the lower oxygen in the atmosphere and the plants became smaller and less abundant as well, contributing to reptiles as well as the large mammals having less food. Creatures will evolve and adapt to their environment or they will become extinct. Only the strongest and most adaptable species will survive. Although certain branches of a species may become extinct the species itself will live on. For example Although many mammals have become extinct were still have many types of mammals, as with reptiles, even apes, us being included, survive Although many types of apes, including many hominids, such as denisovians, and Neanderthals, for example. It would appear the word extinct seems like is misleading. Some species aren't extinct only certain branches actually went extinct where as others simply evolved.
Oxygen is not going to make "air" extremely flammable. "Air" doesn't burn. There is no fuel in "air" and thus it cannot be flammable. It may have supported combustion more readily (e.g. made fires burn somewhat more fiercely), but that still doesn't make the air any more or less "flammable".
Imagine driving down the highway hitting one of these things.
