    Love how Donnie is portrayed cause it’s hard to explain to people how truly ADHD affects me when I myself don’t know how it differs me from a normal person. A few things I would like to add as an autistic person who likes representation on media: if you're looking for representation or characters to call autistic, characters like donny are the best. But I also see a lot of people labeling anyone who does anything that us autists do as autistic (such as stimming) a lot of us stuff that we do, like stimming, confusion about tone, infodumping, etc., is stuff anybody can do, including atypicals- the difference is we do it a lot more and regardless of emotions at the time. Not really relevant to this video but a lot of other ones I've seen where people are like "this character being autistic" and show them stimming for like 3 minutes throughout the course of a several hour long show when that's something everyone does 😭

    • @ErinAguilar
      @ErinAguilar  2 роки тому +122

      I def agree that stimming can be done by NTs/allistics! But I think it’s important to remind ppl that autistics stim too because often stimming is viewed as weird or out of place, so normalizing it is important! Especially since I feel autistics stim more frequently/ have a multitude of ways to stim compared to NTs, if that makes sense 😅

    • @gwenethp511
      @gwenethp511 2 роки тому +64

      @@ErinAguilar oh no for sure! Stimming is just any repeated motion done for emotional regulation. When you get slapped, it's common to rub the spot where you got hit - that's stimming, and that's something everyone does. When you're stressed, it's common to squeeze a stress ball - something everyone does in high stress situations. But people will see that for five seconds and be like "look, they're autistic!" And I feel that can be harmful in the long run. Like all of my friends jump up and down when happy - only a few of us are autistic. It just feels kind of exasperating for everything to be labeled as autistic when it's not necessarily, it feels like a vast misunderstanding of autism and that seems even more dangerous within the autistic community. I'm autistic myself, and seeing such wonderful representation through Donnie's character actually makes me feel a lot more validated as a neurodivergent. I didn't get good representation like this, much less representation at all, when I was growing up, and it just feels wonderful to see it now. Like, it makes me feel like I'm not alone, and there's really nothing wrong with what I do and how I do it. I stim a lot, especially when I'm excited, I have a lot of sensory issues, especially in touch and textures, I have trouble with tones of voices and social cues (especially when I was a kid), I'm too blunt for my own good lots of the time, and I have intense interests all the time, just to name some cases. The hyperfixation, "murder is frowned upon" and low empathy "I don't feel much" thing is so fkin real it almost hurts.
    Sometimes I play a video game or read a book, someone calls "five minutes til dinner" and I'm like "yeah, I'll be there in a minute" and then I look a clock thinking "okay it's probably been like three minutes already, I should go, I need to take a shit" and it's two days later.
    When someone touches my stuff or invades any of my space in any manner when I didn't give them direct permission, I usually react by going to bite people before I remember that oh yeah, I wear a mask because I'm paranoid about people seeing my face and even if I didn't, I would probably get charged with something so I can't stab them either. But really, I appreciate Donnie's absolutely maniacal tendencies like "can I use lethal force?", testing tranquilizer darts on his siblings and chainsawing snow sculptures (among other things), I feel it so hard sometimes and wish I had the option to just *do* all that.
    And then there's the low empathy where I'm just like "I can see you're crying and freaking out but could you do that literally anywhere else, please, I'm trying to read about spider biology" thing. Sometimes I look at people and just go "wow, I literally could not care less if you died right now" and then I feel bad but then immediately go back to "it's literally not my problem, why would I care about it". And when *I* feel things directly, as in because I'm actually interacting with other human beings instead of watching a show or playing a game or reading a book, it is usually extremely uncomfortable and/or terrifying.
    Also the amount of times I've seriously offended people by just saying what I think about them and what they do is astounding. Makes sense I guess since a lot of people just take shit personally, which is *incredibly* annoying to the point I'm actually a bit angry about it, but it just gets to me when they think that it was meant to be an insult. Sometimes it is but not usually. And then they get mad at me for being quiet and not talking at all outside of very specific places and situations. Like, do you want me to say what I mean or do you want me to not hurt your feelings? Because apparently there is no in between because I have no filter.

    • @rebekadoczi2136

I saw someone's video talking about Donnie's representation of low empathy, one part saying that just because one has low empathy doesn't mean they don't care. @ErinAguilar  2 роки тому +18

      @@nunbeam In the event someone says that to you, I wouldn’t take it too personally. They must care enough about your feelings to fake feeling something they don’t. Its hard to force yourself to feel empathy when it’s not there, but often times ppl with low empathy will try their best to comfort the person they care about regardless. So if you find out someone with low empathy didnt feel the way you thought they did, it’s not because they don’t care about you, but because it’s just not something they can do. Rather, focus on how they faked it instead. If they celebrated with you, comforted you, let you vent, cheered for you, etc. depending on the situation. If they made the effort to give you those reactions despite not fully feeling how you felt, then I wouldn’t be hurt about them not empathizing with me. Hope this cleared that up ❤️

    I'm going to have an autism screening later this month in large part due to how much I relate to donnie and autistic people who I've seen talking about their experiences thanks to rise's great representation! even if I don't end up having it, it's been great learning about my low empathy, obsessive interests, difficulty expressing emotion, etc and that it doesn't have to be a bad thing :]
    thank you so much for this compilation!! I really see myself in donnie so much

      @@tr0y644 let me just say thay america's health system sucks 🙃 I didn't know this but it wasn't a screening, just a casual talk with a doctor. She told me to take some online tests and send her the results. So I did and I scored highly likely for autism on all of them. Unfortunately, I cannot get officially diagnosed because the screening costs about two thousand dollars and I just don't want to/can't spend that kind of money.
      I think for now I'll just self-diagnose and call it a day

    I remember my dad insisting I watch "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" with him, and after a couple of episodes, he said, "Pay attention to Donnie." And I did, and near the end of the season, my dad asked me, "Do you see any similarities between Donnie and yourself?" And I did admit I saw a few, and then my dad gently said that Donnie is written to portray autistic traits and that was his way of gently breaking it to me that he'd suspected for some time I am autistic, and show me it is not a bad thing.

    Something about the characters in this show is so damn relatable but in an explicitly neurodivergent way.
