A marriage made in heaven. I was not familiar with Clare's work until I heard this recording. I introduced one of my voice students to Dianne Schuur today and I played this piece. She cried. It is the closest thing I can thing i can think of to demonstrate God's gift to us. Not only an arranger who can color in such a way as to pull the deepest emotions from you but a singer that can almost in a psychic way translate what Clare meant. Thelonius Monk would be proud.
1960jack I wonder what it was like to be in the studio and to feel God's presence in that moment. To this day, it is the only version I listen to. I am sure that was a Neumann U87 used because you can hear every breath. She records so close to the mic that it does not afford you the option to make a mistake. Schuur equals Born to sing!
Yes! I agree with many of the comments here that Diane Schuur has an incredible voice. I put her in good company with the greats that have passed on like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, etc. I love the rendition of this tune and the arrangements make me feel that it is evening and midnight around the corner. The young ones should listen to this instead of the rubbish out there. Thank you for posting.
Gracias Clare por tu contribucion, este arreglo es sublime, y Diane increible, como la pieza de Thelonius, 3 genios, y gracias a los musicos interpretes , que nivel, mil gracias por esta muestra de Dios.
wow what a great rendition of this tune, she is unique . talented and what a voice. i visit seattle to visite friends and always think of diane when im there. i live in vancouver island. few people know of this tune by her.
I totaly agree, but Clare was not only the greatest arranger, he was an unbelievably inspired jazz improviser, with an unique harmonic concept that unfortunately only very few understand.
when i heard dianne schuur in love dance, wow how did she do that, she has a very high range of voice, the only singer that ive heard that kind of voice, she is very gifted musician,Glory to God in Jesus name.

The definitive versions of this tune are by Sarah Vaughan,Carmen Lundy and the brilliant Ms.Toni Harper.Mr.Fischer's arrangement is heavily influenced by the remarkable Marty Paich's arrangement for Toni Harper on her Night Mood LP which is a masterpiece. He used the same instruments and voicings for Schuur that Paich used for Harper.Jeremy Lubbock significantly improved on Fischer's interpretation of Paich's arrangement where Carmen Lundy took it to the stratosphere where it remains to day.
@msjazzylinn Thanks so much. For many years I'd been relatively unfamiliar w/ her work, but somehow had a sense of her as being a little bit too much of a belter, too shrill or brassy for my tastes (or, perhaps more accurately, the inherited tastes of my two parents), but from the first time I heard the 1992 recording and one or two others, I was quickly disabused of such notions. I've been a huge fan ever since.
BTW, 4 those interested in seeking out any of Clare Fischer's own recordings (and/or receiving updates re Dr. Fischer's myriad of recently & yet-2B recorded works, which R2B gradually unveiled over the next decade or so), u can visit his website. 4 the active link, please consult my notes above - click on 'Show more.'
@msjazzylinn BTW, as is probably obvious even if you haven't checked out my uploads, I'm a huge Clare Fischer fan as well; it's a shame they never worked together again. They have much in common: Great technique, with each producing work of great complexity and/or intricacy. Great ears, both in terms of intonation and harmonic fluency. And for all the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic complexity on display, it's never for show, but to convey a song, a story, an honest emotion.
Clare's genius will never be equaled.

Clare, we miss you!!
Music does not exceed the level of emotion and creativity in this piece. How can I stop listening?
Extremely haunting.
It begins to tell 'round midnight
'Round midnight
I do pretty well 'til after sundown
Suppertime I'm feeling sad
But it really gets bad 'round midnight
Memories always start 'round midnight
'Round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And old midnight knows it too
When some quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darling I need you
Lately I find
You're out of my arms
And I'm out of my mind
Let our love take wing some midnight
'Round midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight comes around
Let our love take wing some midnight
'Round midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight comes around

IMHO, Diane's version stand head to head with Linda Ronstadt/Nelson Riddle's. Both are superb and sublime....
