  • Demonstrating the diversity of sounds from a single patch on the Haken Continuum. The drone, plucked and singing tones are controlled entirely by playing technique from a single patch developed by Edmund Eagan called Singing Bamboo.

    I went on a Continuum binge last night, and imo this is one of the best performances, that's really showing the wide potential and performance art this thing inhabits, on youtube. Thank you for that. After really informing myself, I no longer see this is an overpriced midi controller but a unique instrument that deserves it's spot in the world for being as expressive and standing-out as it is, with arguably one of the most powerful synth engines and editor one could get for money. And yes, it's waaay beyond my price range. Ugh, one day

      Ed, there is also the ContinuuMini, which is a much more affordable, scaled back version. It has the exact same sound engine inside, though.

    Amazing performance! Is this a factory preset? Does it automatically drone the lower tone and splits the keyboard? This is mind blowing

    • @SallySparks

      thanks, Hnrique. it's the same patch by Edmund Eagan from the factory, called Singing Bamboo. The tone depends on the pressure and attack, so everything that I did is controlled with the fingers, except for the sustain of the drone, which is controlled with a pedal and the continuum configured to treat the pedal as Sostenuto.

    No where close to this excellence but the concept is like the string patch I created on the Korg Pa4X. Depending on how hard you tap the keys, you could get a pizzicato or staccato effect. If you held the keys down, you get just the strings playing without any pizz. or stacc.
    I recently came across this instrument, but the price point a tad bit outside of what I can afford.

      Honestly, it is better to think of this as more of a very atypical fretless string instrument.
      Yes, it has black and white key markers and a flat playing surface but that is the only way it is similar to a keyboard. You really don’t play it like a keyboard.
      It is very much it’s own thing that lives in the space between a lot of different instruments.

    the problem with this instrument is that you need to keep your eyes peeled on the keyboard, one slight wrong movement and it's obvious. I had an interest in this but after taking extensive notes this instrument, as a performance tool, is way too hard to master, except for slow pieces.

    • @SallySparks
      @SallySparks  3 роки тому +1

      It isn’t easy to master, you are correct. However, at a Continuum conference, we had two blind attendees who connect very well with the instrument. But it requires study and practice to master, as with any fine i nstrument

    • @pfylim
      @pfylim 3 роки тому +1

      @@SallySparks thanks for the update, time is really the thing i don't enough of and I'd rather dedicate that to my keyboard and composing. I don't know how a blind person would be able to play effectively apart from slow and gliss (gliding) type of sounds. multiple octave playing (without mistakes) would be near impossible. you really need to be looking at where you place your fingers.
