What are people talking his voice sounding bad? It sounds Amazing, Great Job Jon. The only reason it may not sound too good for some of you people is: 1) you listen to stupid singers who only use autotune for everyone of their performances or 2) you think he doesn't sound like he does on recording, which he can't because he had to use his inside voice and sing with a softer tone with the acoustics, so overall he can't be as loud reaching his average notes, in which, so what? I honestly think I prefer his vocals here more than on the studio version. Overall, And Once Again, Great Job Jon. Love Switchfoot(:
No trouble at all compared to all of you that say he is having trouble, try playing like that, let alone playing and singing like that and see how much trouble you have and I assure you it will be way more than the alleged trouble he is having!!!
I think its largely cause this song is pretty much based around open strings on a guitar and he doesn't' like down-tuning his guitar every time to play it. He has trouble with a lot of the higher notes in his songs in E major live. He strains them all.
Jon's voice is not the excellent, but profound, because there are whole history and personality behind it... and just because it is a familiar dear (sweet) voice...
I remember I was there for this one and soooo many more. “LIVE X’s” was the TOTAL AWESOME EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I Love the family at 99X always have I ride every day with the original 99X black and white plate on the front of my bumper PROUD OF IT!
You are so lucky friend, where was it? We had a 99X here in Atl at one point I think, getting so old I can't remember for sure. As I'm watching because I'm trying to figure this out on guitar, I can't help but notice that nobody is really moving there! He's daring everyone to move, but lets face it, these guys are so great and this song is so deep and special that everyone is mesmerized by the pure beauty of this moment!
I've been playing guitar and singing for 30 some years....it only really becomes difficult if I try chewing gum at the same time....but I've had a lot of practice. For those of you struggling to sing and play together... hang in there, you'll get it in time. :-)
They're Christian, right? well I'm Atheist and I've found this band not long ago and I just Love their songs, they Really know how to write songs, besides the lead singer reminds me to Kurt Cobain♥♥♥
Thus is an acoustic performance your vocals are going to be much different then when your not playing in acoustic. His voice is perfect here for the tone of the guitar he's playing.
@Seth95626 Man not to burst your bubble, but that is his actual job to do those things professionally. Like you know how you do the same thing 9 - 5, this guy supposedly plays those same songs everyday. When you're a payed musician, you don't get away with an excuse that's too hard. You either do it or not. As for it being "hardest thing a human can do"...are you crazy? I am a musician, and there's an infinite amount of jobs far harder then playing rhythm guitar and singing at the same time.
Welcome to the planet Welcome to existence Everyone's here Everyone's here Everybody's watching you now Everybody waits for you now What happens next? What happens next? I think of King David standing in front of goliath, goliath is a bunch of minion bond servants with no authority, they their mouth, but won't be about it, Amen 1 Samuel 17:43-46 He won the moment he glorified God. I love you Lord, still on assignment. David James West, a Christian man
@XxiHeart Well notice there I never said that he "sucks". In fact I have a lot of respect for John's writing ability and voice tone, even though I am not a fan of switchfoot. The point the other guy was making is that how you perform on stage doesn't matter, and he was being pretty immature about it. I am not saying Switchfoot sucks because this is a bad live performance, but that because John is a professional musician he doesn't get away with "it's too hard to do" excuse.
What about singing and playing piano? There, you're using 10 fingers to play a melody and a bass line at the same time. Or singing and playing drums where you're playing very complex patterns using hands and feet. Guitar is the most popular instrument for singer/songwriters because it's relatively easy to strum a chord in a repetitive pattern while singing the melody. One of the hardest things a human can do? Probably not. Does it take tallent and practice regardless? Yes.
@Beagsim10 It is NOT very easy for me. 4 years of guitar and 6 years of singing. You can't just go do it. It takes practice for those it doesn't come naturally to and by practice I mean A LOT of practice. I still don't have it down. I can barely sing and play one song together. And I say that because, like I said, gotta think of the words, hit the right pitches, sing at the right rhythms, control four/five fingers on the fret board, and strum at different rhythms. Knowing it by heart helps too.
He is only having trouble because your have to SING OUT.. and right now he is doing an acoustic version and sometimes the soft music makes you not wanna jump in with your loud voice so it comes out this way ..Great band and listen to other recordings they do great its just sometimes hard to use your outside voice in a inside voice area lol
@Krisselann I don't think he's having trouble singing as far as his voice goes. Playing guitars and singing is one of the hardest things a human can do. Gotta think of the words, hit the right pitches, sing at the right rhythms, control four/five fingers on the fret board, and strum at different rhythms.
@ez24yankees If you haven't tried it, then you don't know. It's hard for me and I'm still struggling to get it down at 4 years of guitar and 6 years of singing. It doesn't come naturally for everyone.
@Anastasia Sampani Differs from person to person. And as a rhythm guitarist, it's not just about up down up down, most of the time it's about 6th-5th down, 1st-2nd up, 3rd-4th down.
Ouch. I'm a professional musician/singer/guitarist/songwriter and it's tough for me to play and sing at the same time. I don't think he's having any problems with any of this except maybe the higher "move" notes as far as staying in his chest voice. I simply stated that for some people, it's tough to do both.
the thing about Jon's voice for me, it just cuts through you and makes you think about what he's saying..one of the most unique singers I've heard and one of my favorites ever
what's up with him having trouble? this is amazing. if this is him having difficulty, then i don't know what to call the 98% of live performances here on youtube.
it's actually harder to play drums and sing at the same time. I play guitar and keyboard and sing for two bands and it's pretty easy and fun. and it was pretty easy to learn. And frankly, and modestly, it's actually easier to sing with an instrument :D it's probably a nurturing thing, it makes you feel more relaxed. "one of the hardest things a human can do"...I dont see why you would say that. People! It's easy, just GO DO IT!
Some aspects are incredibly easy when playing guitar and piano while singing...others are seemingly impossible until done so I have no idea what you mean by its easy. I do somewhat get what you mean how it can be easier at times to sing with an instrument, I agree. But that's not always the case man.
i was genuinely guteed when i found out switchfoot were a christian rock band after listening to their album years ago it made me realise it had an entirely different meaning to so many songs, ah well
12 years later, i still have this on my playlist. This song, this version, it just hits different.
the sound of those guitars... and his voice. oh my.
I love his voice, It's so amazing and raw. One of the best bands, Like ever.
What are people talking his voice sounding bad? It sounds Amazing, Great Job Jon. I read the first sentence and bulletpoint of your comment. And instantly agreed with you. Lol.
His voice is actually very close to the studio cut.. just pure and true.. :)
agreed. the volume could be turned up a bit though. my only complaint
Thank you bro @Brandough. Very well said. Really love switchfoot. 😎❤️
Perfect song for this 2020
One of the most uplifting songs ever and i always listen to this when Im feel down
No trouble at all compared to all of you that say he is having trouble, try playing like that, let alone playing and singing like that and see how much trouble you have and I assure you it will be way more than the alleged trouble he is having!!!
Thank you, someone said what they apparently cant seem to understand lol.
I saw them in concert literally last night and I moved in tears.
where did you see them in concert??
Why do you feel the need to tell strangers this?
@@Hoboscouts Because life is worth sharing with people, especially the beautiful wonderful moments! Do you agree Hoboscouts?
I think its largely cause this song is pretty much based around open strings on a guitar and he doesn't' like down-tuning his guitar every time to play it. He has trouble with a lot of the higher notes in his songs in E major live. He strains them all.

Duude, Jon's wearing my shooes! lololol!! I seriously bought those shoes way back in 2011 at kohl's in Chico, CA! No flippin wayyyy hahaha
Ryan Monahan ya dude they are converse. I still wear mine!
Ryan Monahan shoot I don't know man. The writing is almost completely worn off of mine now. Your welcome!
Who are the 17 people that did not like this?
THE BEIBER FANS..
Switchfoot supports Taylor Guitars. God is proud.
What an extraordinary artist.
I've been playing guitar and singing for 30 some years....it only really becomes difficult if I try chewing gum at the same time....but I've had a lot of practice. For those of you struggling to sing and play together... hang in there, you'll get it in time. :-)
One of the few bands that sound even better live than they do on their tracks
This band will never stop being amazing
this band will never stop playing that good
They're Christian, right? well I'm Atheist and I've found this band not long ago and I just Love their songs, they Really know how to write songs, besides the lead singer reminds me to Kurt Cobain♥♥♥
This is the only song I know by them lolz I love how he says "dare you to moooo"
Moooooo! :-P
I love this song, but I still can't figure out why they'd want to put the extended emphasis on the MOO. :-P
Thus is an acoustic performance your vocals are going to be much different then when your not playing in acoustic. His voice is perfect here for the tone of the guitar he's playing.
I dare you to mooooove.. great acoustic version.. well done
Great performance. Awesome!

You must not have gotten very far as a musician with that mentality lol? There's a reason Switchfoot is where they are today!
the gain on the EQ for the voice is too low.. :(
Honestly... such beautiful Taylors.. lend me one.
Good Vibes all the way

This is your opinion
@@Hoboscouts And what is your opinion? This is now the second comment with no hint of love of kindness behind your remark.
@rence089 haha It was a joke I love and respect this band, no need for such jackassary
probably because it would sound more weird if he said "I dare you to MOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEE"
what's up with him having trouble? this is amazing. if this is him having difficulty, then i don't know what to call the 98% of live performances here on youtube.
