What is so cool to me about this fill intro, is that they put this song as the first track on side A of piece of mind. Back in the 80s when you just dropped a needle and played the album, and order of tracks actually mattered! And this was the first album after Clive Burr left and Nicko joined and every diehard Maiden fan wanting to hear the new drummer. And they showcased him right from the start. Love that!
I remember hearing that song for the first time right after the album was released and then not to long after actually meeting Nicko and telling him that was the coolest thing I'd heard at the time. I am a guitar player but love the drums and this has to be one of my all time favorite songs and drum songs for sure. Great Job!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been trying to master this for the longest time, YOU MADE IT POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve never learned that and decided to search...I was pleasantly surprised that your video was the first to pop-up. Note, that entire album is money. Great lesson, thanks Dave!
Ah yes, very nice! Love to see it being done slowly for a change, so we can properly follow it. Some extra fun background info, about Nicko McBrain (not sure if it's true, though). Piece of Mind, the album that Where Eagles Dare is on, is the first album with Nicko McBrain. He was to replace Clive Burr, which quite upset some fans who thought Iron Maiden would not be as good as it was with Burr. So, the band started the new album, with the brand new drummer, with *this* particular song. How's that for showing off "yer new goods"!
Great job explaining this. It's not easy to figure out. I remember the video of 'Icarus' where Nicko used (I believe) a single headed Sonor kit in those days w/ Ludwig Silver Dot heads. Don't know if that was what was used in the studio but imagine that combo provided that big open 80's sound.
Cool. I’ve noticed that playing LRK instead of LRL on the 456 has its advantages. You can plant the kick on that third partial of the triplet, and you free up a little extra time before those flams.
Great transcription. Just something I heard about this drum intro that may be relevant to your commentary from the 3:30 part on in your vid. I seem to remember that Steve Harris approached Nicko and told him to play a four bar intro for this song. Nicko played something completely different from this. Steve didn't like it and they worked together until Nicko came up with this intro and Steve was finally pleased with it.
Actually go back to the MY CYMBAL video and using the playback speed inside of UA-cam, slow it down and you’ll see that Nicko actually does NOT play a flam each time he comes back to the snare. From the beginning it’s actually three snares followed by two toms and then the single tom triplet. Basically a single 5 stroke roll, and then the tom triplet. The way that you explained it in your video is how I’ve always thought he did it until I saw that video and a couple others where he plays it. But the snare goes by so fast it just sounds like a flam on the snare.
Although let me add that on the album version, it truly sounds like flams on the snare. I don’t know if he’s changed the way he’s played it over the years or what. I doubt he has because it’s much easier to play flams LOL But in the video MY CYMBAL video, he is clearly playing multiple hits on the snare, not flams. Very easy to see if you slow the video down.

Track order mattered even more on casssette.
I think piece of Mind is one of the best symbols and drum sounding produced albums of all time imo. Thanks for breaking that fill down
In my opinion Powarslave drum sound is even better. For me Piece of Mind shines in the guitar parts. Their sound is so awesome.
Great vid, an all time classic drum intro.
Happy retirement Nicko.. You earned it

it's 12
It's in 4/4. It's very basic 8th note triplets.
@@nikdsh sounds like music...
@@lenov100 well you asked, so...
I'm glad all I gotta worry about is playing Steves bass lines.......love Maiden been playing bass 36 years
Steve is one of the greatest bassist for sure......
Very nice & precise.
Congratulations man!!!!
Thanks for the sharing
Awesome video!😊
There is more notes on bass drum along the riff, isnt it?
yes!
It's not in 6/8, it's 12/8
Cool! De 80ies metal is probably recorded from below the toms without resohead;). Nicko plays i believe with single-ply Remo coated...
Nicko played Ludwig silver dot single ply heads (clear with a silver dot).
remo cs in the 80s
Nice sound on your drums. They sound so "big" like John Bonham's.
Thank you man!!!!🤟🏻😎
Brilliant thanks 🤘🤘
I’ve seen him play this fill on a couple videos. There’s no flam. He’s playing quintuplets.

Ludwig Silver Dot heads. No hydraulic or Pinstripes.
What's the bass drum pattern for the drum intro?
John Acobs the bass drum is on beat 3 if you're counting in 6/8
@@thegoodfoot sorry but Nicko does triplets with bass drum
@@axelnardis - this transcription is correct- Nicko does triplets for parts of the groove, not the fill/intro.
Hi! Why not 4/4 all with triplets?
It is in 4/4
Thank you
Poor bass guitar... (3:07)
His name isn't "Neecko".
You play it SO wrong dude
what EXACTLY IS wrong?
