    It looks like you bought from Beep. They are a retro computing shop in Akihabara (and a larger, second shop outside of town). They refurbish machines, sell parts, software, and modern repair kits. As for those special keys: Katakana is the simplified characters with more sharp corners and straight lines. Used for foreign words, some names, and onomatopoeia. Hiragana is for Japanese words (and usually starts you on the hunt for the correct kanji). Theres this curious thing about kana: There are several code sets including "half-width" and "full-width" symbols. Its a right pain in the rear figuring out which a particular software or website needs. Online banking for example works a lot with half-width kana. As for those stickers, the sheet says "key-top" so I think you are correct. They are there in the case you wear out the print. I havent seen too many X68K keyboards, but none I have seen had worn off print. Though it must be a thing if someone bothered to make stickers.
    That particular mouse, the trackball is quite sought after. Mine is the more typical black lump with 2 gray buttons. Ive seen the trackball mouse go anywhere from $50 to $150... JUST the mouse. So, the part you rotated actually comes off, and then the toggle switch at the bottom flips the ball up into a pocket on the top. No need to flip the mouse over. There is also a mold kit for "re-rubberizing" the ball.

    I'll stick to playing X68000 games on my Mister FPGA lol but the actual hardware always intrigued me... Some years ago (about 15) I almost won an auction for one that ended up selling for $800. But those 2008 prices are a dream now. Great video!

    I've only ever seen the X68000 through emulation. I always thought it was weird that it's such a powerful computer, but it still used 5.25 inch floppies, rather than 3.5 inch ones.
    BTW, I recently ordered a new heating element for my oven, and the box was ALMOST as big as that one. Inside, the element was just in a single-layer bubble-wrap bag, loose in the bottom of the box! At least the X68000 was packed well. :)

    • @retrobitstv

      Sounds like a typical Amazon packing job right there!
      That's a great question! I have no idea why Sharp took so long to make the switch to 3.5" disks when Atari ST, Amiga, and Mac had already done it by the time the X came around. Could be something specific to the Japanese market at that time 🤷‍♂️

    The most amazing thing is that they kept the box. That's not a small box and would have taken up a lot of space in a typical small home. Someone really had to want to keep it and keep it in good condition rather than used to store something else. Amazing care.

    • @retrobitstv

    Thats a nice overall package. Your seller is one of the highest profile retro computer sellers (BEEP) in Japan. Their shop in Akihabara is really cool to visit. I am fortunate to own a few X68k's, but I got them back when this would not have looked like such a good deal :)

    • @retrobitstv
      @retrobitstv  Рік тому

      I really wish I had gotten into retro 10 or 15 years ago when prices were more reasonable. I figured it was now or never as the supply will eventually dry up and prices seem to be pushing higher and higher.
      I visited Akihabara years ago but wasn't into retro at that point so I missed out on an opportunity. I only learned that this machine came from BEEP after seeing the paperwork that came with it. Buyee obscures the seller's real name in the auction! Next time I get the opportunity to go, I will definitely be checking it out in-person!

Lots of great little bonuses with this purchase! Or maybe this is a "large" bonus? We saw how big it is compared to a VHS tape. 80s kid here, I have felt more and more recently that it is a big risk when spending anything over $200-300 for aging electronics that are reaching the end of their lifespan beyond repairs. *Especially* for personal computer consoles that use floppy drives, those are ticking time bombs where the floppy drive magnets and information have most likely deteriorated. Spending $2000-3000 for this Sharp x68000 seems particularly nuts, even as a collectible, as it is a huge money sink and each of the games are well into hundreds of dollars per game, minimum. Sad that is where we are at because time will eventually do it's thing and make these consoles and computers useless other than to display on a shelf.

    • @retrobitstv
      @retrobitstv  Рік тому +1

      Yea, you can already see it happening with the cheaply made machines like the C64. The chips are just failing left and right. Fortunately, the community keeps making recreations to keep them going. I wonder if the same will happen for such a niche machine as the x68k? I'm happy to report that as of now both drives work and all of the original disks as well. I won't be putting any further wear on them though, as the system now has sd-card based storage.

    • @warchild9381
      @warchild9381 Рік тому

      @@retrobitstv funny you mention the C64, I recently got two and both have bad chips. Sent one out to get fixed by someone who specializes in C64 repairs, and in two days of it working, another chip failed that connects the floppy drive to the C64. Not worth sending back and forth since I can't do repairs at all, so that's about $300 wasted. Even NES and SNES consoles are dying off one by one because their CPU chips are deteriorating.
      While cool and all to have real hardware, it's just not a very smart buy anymore. I would actually call it a detriment and a liability at this point if you really just want to play the games as intended. Thank goodness for The Mister and people keeping these games alive, as you said.

I got a couple external SCSI hard drives that I replaced the drive with SD2SCSI and can just hook it up to even to the OG X68k with SXSI. Back in 1999, I wrote my own serial transfer program to transfer FD images to and from my PC to a 1.5 MB RAM drive on my EXPERT and could read/write real floppy discs with. Way back then, there were tons of sites that had X68k freeware and tons of utilities. You can still find some on the wayback machine.

Not only are they cheaper, but they uses image files instead of native partitions which makes it really simple to use with a PC emulator, downloaded .hds files, etc. I found an English archive of X68K software that mirrors a bunch of old FTP sites and have been crawling through some of it but there's not much documentation on what anything is or how it works! Rad. Not super familiar to me but it seems like a great platform. Between the higher bit depth in the graphics system and the inclusion of a synthesizer for sound (the lack of which was a severe limitation of the Amiga IMO) it seems like a real step up from the Amigas. I'm curious about the capabilities of the coprocessors - those capabilities are a key defining characteristic of the Amiga so it'd be interesting to see how this platform does in that regard...

That gives me an idea, maybe for part 2 I will do some A/B comparisons with the Amiga. As far as comparisons go... Yeah that's tough. Maybe comparing to more modern Amiga ports (by hobbyists, etc.) would help getting a "real" comparison of capabilities? It's a layout used not by keyboards intended for professional use but seen on electronic pocket dictionaries and the like. So that's what these are for, a simplified layout that mimics the low-skill devices laid out in essentially alphabetical ordering as opposed to what I assume to be a more efficient layout for faster typists.
