I knew when we saw Callum in the intro he was DOOMED- Episode 8 is absolutely amazing. Probably my third favorite episode to date, after two season 3 episodes. CALLUM WAS TORTURED 😭 RAYLA TOO- When Finnegrin froze Raylas blood in her veins, I honestly reacted the same way as Callum. And can we talk about how Callum straight up REFUSES to use dark magic, but whenever Rayla is in danger, he doesn’t think twice?? He used the same spell as he did in season 2, just to get out of the chains to save Rayla. I think that is why he looked guilty towards the end of the episode, and also why we saw the snakes. The hug at the end had me in TEARS- the “I’m glad.” Just KILLED me. These two are finally the two best friend / lovers that I remember. Absolute banger of an episode. I would say SO much more, but I decided to cut myself off. ALSO- totally forgot to mention that we have a Sky AND Ocean primal mage now. Absolutely insane!
This might be a coincidence, but Callum learning the arcanum the same way Aang from ATLA learned the element. Aang started with air, Callum first arcanum is sky. Their 2nd element was water and ocean. I think next arcanum is gonna be earth, like aang.
This may the darkest TDP episode since "Hearts of Cinder." Between Callum and Rayla being tortured, Callum once again being forced to compromise his ethics (and potentially giving Aaravos more power over him), and Soren almost getting beaten to death, this may be one of the most intense episodes of the entire show. And I get the feeling it'll only get bleaker as we go into S6 and S7. Finnegrin and Kim'dael are probably the closest the show has gotten to flat out pure evil. In a setting with morally grey villains with humane or at least somewhat understandable goals (except for Aaravos who's goals and motives are still enigmatic), these 2 are the exception. The former is a sadist who enjoys lording his power over others, and the latter is a centuries old serial killer who's murdered countless innocents both to extend her life and for her own amusement. They aren't victims of the cycle of revenge and retaliation that plagues the world, they don't fight for a higher cause, nor are they looking to avenge a lost loved one or protect anyone they love. They're just selfish psychopaths drunk on their power. And while Finnegrin won't live to cause any more misery, Kim'dael is no doubt going to be a problem for the world into the next 2 seasons.
I think the dark magic does have something to do with it. Yes, he explained why but he came to that conclusion because Finnegrin pushed him to his limits and he was forced to use dark magic
