      @SomethingReallyStrange If you notice, he looked up into the air with a peaceful, knowing smile. The huskies howled right at the moment he validated them. He recognized what many owners of intelligent, adoring dogs do, that they respond in an inexplicable manner to exactly what you are thinking every time. One day science will explain it.

      Even the show dogs have an innate drive to run you can’t breed out thousands of years of instinct. Yes there is a mess difference between show and working lines but the genetics are still there. Anyplace that doesn’t get at least 4 solid months of winter is a cruel climate to raise a husky or malamute. I have a malamute and a husky and their season is done two months shorter than my Alaskan huskies. Both have coats suitable for minimal -60°f .

    I don't have a sleddog race but sheepdogs and they do love to pull. When I take out the harness the dogs starts to jump, and scream and go nuts because they got so excited. You can never force a dog to love it, you can never force a dog who don't want to pull, to do it. They have to have it in it self. A dog who loves to pull - you can't miss that.
    A dog who is born to pull, knows what he's gonna do when the harness comes on. My dogs who's not sleddogs is trained to pull and they love to run. Never forced them to it.
    I had an Samoyed last winter and he had never pull a sled before, never pull a bike before. Never been in a harness before.
    Only do some tricks, takes walks etc.
    When I got him he knew for the first time he got an harness on what he was gonna to do. And to see that was the most powerful thing I ever experienced.
    It was so beautiful to see a dog do what its born to do. The happiness in his eyes, the joy when we took of and he could run for hours.
    He came from an owner who thought they could have him as an companion dog and be happy with it.
    I took him from owner who didn't had a clue what they got into when they bought a sleddog and not give it what he needed.
    Walks and tricks wasn't good enough for him.
    They wanted a dog that could enjoy sleeping in the couch, take a nice walk in the forest without the leash.
    They didn't understand that they bought a dog that was born to run. But he was white, fluffy and cute.
    They couldn't keep him inside, he went nuts. Outside he was so stressed about everything. He had so much energy inside his body that wanted to come out. The owner couldn't handle that and I was honest to them when I met them.
    Why the hell did you bought a sleddog as a companion pet? google and read, look at videos about them and then you understand your dog and its behavior.
    When this dog got what he needed, he became a different dog, he was calm, happy and - obedient.
    No problem to leave alone a couple hours in an apartment and no problem to walk with.
    He knew what he was born to do but the owner didn't.
    When you see a dog do what they are breed to, you'll understand the dog.

      77kirkwood I’m a musher and no, there isn’t. Wolves are too large and unpredictable to make a good sled dog. Smaller dogs are better because they can get oxygen to their entire bodies faster while running. A wolf hybrid would just be dangerous to run.

      Dogs can enjoy the outdoors of their own free will without being exploited for human use. Just like I can go swimming in a lake for fun without someone capturing me, controlling me, and making me swim to pull a raft for their own personal gains. Dogs are quite capable of moving their legs without human domination and orders.
      Every dog I've cared for has enjoyed running and enjoyed the outdoors and not one of them has been used as a "vehicle" or "tool" for my own purposes.

    • @RiesenWuschel
      @RiesenWuschel 7 років тому +40

      +VeganVixen. You speak like someone who had never had a dog. Actually, I am sure every dog you would have would be miserable. You are one of those people who try to treat dogs like humans, when they really are not.
      Dogs LOVE to have a job. They see themselves as adults, not as cute little critters you have to take care of. If you tell your dog it has a job, and the job, incidentally, is running around in the world with his best friends and family, that dog is ELATED! This high energy sled dogs have to be STOPPED before they fall over! They never stop running on their own. You need to bolt the running wheels in breederies sometimes for their own health.
      A dog is not a human. And if you treat him as a dog, as a full member of the pack, he is happy. If you went to dog school you would know. If you had a dog you would know. If you knew anything about dogs you would SEE it in that video. -.-
      Why do I waste my time talking to someone without any intention of understanding humans best friend anyway?

    • @VixenAurora
      @VixenAurora 7 років тому +4

      Wow...I have cared for dogs my ENTIRE life except for the last few years. I Dogs enjoying to run of their own free will is NOT a human trait -.-
      Apparently you are one of "those" people who goes into the forest and thinks all the wild animals are "miserable" because a human isn't dominating and controlling their movements. You must hate seeing dog parks where all those "miserable" dogs are running around in "agony", tails wagging with "terror", "depression-playing" with other dogs, "sadly" chasing balls and sticks that their "painful" free will causes them to "horribly" run after them. Oh yes, dogs are clearly so miserable and depressed when they CHOOSE to run and play. Wow... you have REALLY bizarre views of dogs.
      Dogs love to run. Period. It has nothing to do with being told when to run, where to run, when to sleep, when to be chained up, when to move, when to stay still, when to eat, when to be hungry, etc. They just love to exercise. It releases pent-up energy and feels good. When I would take my dogs out, they were happy because of their own enjoyment of going out, playing, running, smelling interesting smells, etc. They weren't "miserable" because I didn't yank them to my leg and give them strict orders to walk exactly beside me and never smell, run or play if I didn't order it.
      I don't treat a dog like a human. I treat a dog like a DOG. YOU seem to be treated a dog like a submissive human into BDSM. Get a human partner for that. Yes dogs like praise from humans they care about. It has NOTHING to do with, "Oh please own me, dominate me, control my every movement! I'm miserable without it!"
      Go to any person with a dog you see running and playing at a dog park and go try to convince them that their dog is "miserable" because he chose to run a certain direction instead of being ordered to, or that she chose to chase a ball regardless of a "master's order that he must". Dogs actually DO like doing things because THEY enjoy it. Running feels good and releases energy. It is NOT just about pleasure knowing a human was served. They enjoy running ITSELF.
      You're turning the fact that dogs like praise from their human guardians and twisting it into "dogs love being strictly dominated and every movement controlled for human use and will be miserable without constant control for human purposes". That is a total distortion!
      I feel sorry for your dogs if you think they don't have their own pleasures in life that isn't just total subservience to a human...

    • @RiesenWuschel
      @RiesenWuschel 7 років тому +25

      Weird... you claim you can read a dogs body language... and yet you seem to miss that they enjoy dog sledding just as much as the humans... now who is the one claiming bullshit?
      Have you ever been to a dog school? Because you sound like someone who would take their dog to a Walddorf school. Dogs thrive with rules and duties, just like humans. They want to be useful, in a pack they have a job and if you dont give them one they get one themselves and you better hope you like it. Nobody 'abuses' or 'mistreats' them by giving them boundaries. They like it. They like following orders, because they enjoy the rewards. Getting a dog to do something he doesnt like to do is hard to impossible and not enjoyable.
      Sled dogs enjoy running, they love it in packs, they get excited when they see harnishes... or wait, is that just dog speech for 'I want to be payed'?
      Next time think before you tell mushers they 'abuse' those bundles of happiness that pull their sled. Because if you actually knew jack shit about those 'dogs' that you only let 'play' because they are not 'humans' and therefore not want to be helpful, you would know that those dogs are probably happier than those miserable plush monsters you just carry around to spoil and leave in confusion and boredom.
      Btw, dog trainer here.

    At some point I realized that even running with him wasn't enough.

First off, they are mixed breeds so they are very hardy dogs and it is extremely satisfying to watch this because of all of the documentaries out there shaming this sport and advocating that it is abuse. This video was incredibly done and I actually got chills watching this! a good sled team reflects off the owner. If the owner is caring, then the sled team will be great.

      The best teams are the ones that do what it takes to win. The winningest kennel ive ever seen had a gas chamber for culling puppies that weren't good enough. And they are famous in the community. Everyone knows his name and buy dogs from him. One of the top mushers in the world.

      During the summer months, there are tours throughout Alaska, like Juneau and Skagway that take you up on a glacier and ride a sled in the snow and possibly play with some puppies. It's something I think everyone should try. And the scenery is unbeatable

    Pretty amazing. What are the main breeds that go into your average sled dog in Alaska?
    Edit: Video explains it for those with a similar question - Grey Hound, Seluki, German Short-haired Pointers, Irish Setters, etc. No specific breeds. Siberian Husky is a pure breed while Alaskan husky is more of a category of an all-encompassing term for all Alaskan sled dogs that are part Husky.

    There are undoubtedly some dog sledders that are, in fact, dog abusers. However, if the dogs are well cared for, I see no problem with the activity in general.

    Each dog has a purpose,let them be in their natural environment. If they belong to be in ice,let them be!Why get them in countries with hot climate and make them a couch potato just like the owner. Let the dogs be for what they are bred to be! 😄
