  • What is the difference between a midwife and an OB/GYN? Sit down with UCHealth midwives Lindsay Burgess, MSN, CNM and Karen L. Vorderberg, MSN, CNM as they explain the differences between midwifery and OB/GYN care throughout a woman’s pregnancy.
One of the biggest differences in midwives and OB/GYN doctors lies in the level of personalized support they provide. From the very beginning of pregnancy, midwives spend time acquainting themselves with the patient and her family. Because midwives take the time to get to know the families, they can provide optimal personalized care, enabling expecting moms to make informed decisions regarding their health care.
Because midwives are thoroughly trained to understand the normalcy of birth as a life process, they can recognize any pregnancy complications early on. Midwives then have immediate access to consult, refer to or collaborate with physicians at any time.

Very informative video! As an obstetrical nurse I love working along side midwives and collaborating with them and other team members to provide the best possible outcome and experience for a delivery.

Are midwives able to administer epidurals or other drugs commonly used during delivery?

No, ob/gyns or midwives cannot administer any kind of anesthesia that’s is used during the labor and delivery process. The one’s in charge of those tasks are anesthesiologist or CRNAs

They provide therapeutic scheme for delivery (drugs) and topical anesthesia in case of episiotomy. Epidural is provided only by anesthesiologists.
Midwifery is a medical profession although it doesn't treat any illness. The midwifery's scope of practice focuses to normality maintenance and prevention. It's really interesting.

It is disappointing that nurse-midwives offer water births. While laboring in water is safe, giving birth carries several well-established risks for the newborn, including pneumonia. I was also disappointed that UCHospital nurse-midwives' website has been recommending chiropractic adjustments of the neck for relaxation during pregnancy, despite the fact this carries a known risk of stroke. Still, nurse-midwives are head-and-shoulders better than Colorado's lay midwives ("Direct-Entry Midwives" or DEMs) who most recently have an appalling perinatal mortality rate of 16 deaths per 1,000 planned home births, with an unknown number of injuries.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4210671/ Epidural carries greater risk than water birth.

Couldn’t that mean that both are unsafe?…
