  • The mudéjar style mosque was founded in 1926 as a token of gratitude, after World War I, to the Muslim tirailleurs from France's colonial empire, of whom some 100,000 died fighting against Germany. It was inaugurated by President Gaston Doumergue. During World War II when France was occupied by Nazi Germany, the Algerian-born official of the mosque, Si Kaddour Benghabrit managed the mosque to serve as a secret refuge for Algerian and European Jews. He saved many Jews, including singer Salim Halali, by making the administrative staff grant them certificates of Muslim identity, which allowed them to avoid arrest and deportation He ensured they were provided shelter, safe passage, and fake Muslim birth certificates to protect them from German persecution.

    Historical description:
"the great mosque of paris" was built from 1922 to 1926 by the architects Robert Fournez, Maurice Mantout and Charles Heubès, according to the plans of Maurice Tranchant de Lunel, Inspector General of Fine Arts in Morocco, who was inspired by the mosques of Fes.
The renovation of this building was carried out by a French company which called on craftsmen from Fez in 2015.
