    Now it makes more sense than the popular explanation.
    Not sure whether in Russian it can mean "three of a kind" but it's what it means in Polish (also it's used to denote the third instalment of a show, book, model or game - first one is jedynka, second is dwójka, third is trójka, etc) - it's still a better name in reference to three horses pulling together than "a three of game creators" haha
    Leonard's surname was shared by at least few of my friends growing up in Poland, but the word itself refers to Russian term about equivalent to "chieftain".

    • @MotorbreathChannel
      @MotorbreathChannel 10 місяців тому +4

      Troika is also the name of the number 3 in Russian. We do not use it to detone installments of art pieces though. We either say 'vtoroy tom' (second tome), or 'vtoraya seriya' (second episode of a series) or 'prodolzheniye' (elongation) in a more general sense. Nowadays we just use the adopted word 'sequel' more and more.
      Boyarskiy means 'of a boyar'. Boyars were the members of the feudal nobility in Russia. The name comes from the word 'boy' - battle. They were the people who have gained their nobility and ownership of land by fighting for the tsars and knyazs (feudal rulers) and it was their duty to keep on fighting. Kind of like Polish 'szlachta' if I understand the term correctly. Boyar families were often the oldest and most respected among the later nobility many of whom would come out of merchants, local industrial magnats or would get alloted nobility by the tsars for their achievments. The struggle between the boyars and Ivan IV where boyars tried to stand against the growing power of tsars and in the way of the unification of the country that was at the time turning into the Russian Empire led to their demise and turning into a just another part of nobility - albeit with a long and glorious history. The nobility still had to serve as officers in the tsar's army all the way up to the communist revolution.

    • @Kadwid
      @Kadwid 10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, I was wondering about the troika usage; am somewhat familiar with what boyars were, but an interesting read there.
      In PL "trójka" can also mean "the number three" on its own. In old speech "wtóry" was also 'second' (tom wtóry, the second volume) and it is retained in some phrases to this day. It's common but not exactly "proper" to call instalments by the number names, officially one would use the words like first, second, third (pierwszy, drugi/wtóry, trzeci).
      "Szlachta" would be as broad as "noble": once warrior by some local "prince" that became a land-owner; later not even that - there was a "tier" of szlachta that had no wealth at all (called gołota - 'the naked ones' ) but they still were responsible for fighting and were the people with vote in royal elections(unlike nobility in the West, szlachta constituted up to 10% of population). So I think boyar would be closer to Polish "wojewoda" (literally: a war leader - a specific kind of a noble at first, contemporarily used as an official function as the head of a county/province. In the olden days they were said to be equal to the sovereign on their own turf), so I loosely associate it to a chieftian. By typing "around equivalent" I emphasise I don't mean "exactly that" but with merely some familiarity between the two terms.@@MotorbreathChannel

    • @MotorbreathChannel
      @MotorbreathChannel 10 місяців тому +2

      @@Kadwid Thank you for the clarification. Yes I vaguely remember the stories about the szlachtichs whos only difference from peasants was their sablya but as long as they had their weapon and defended their honor they were still noble. A kind of a weird analogy to the later Russian system would be the 'poor people' of whom Dostoyevskiy and other Russian lirerary classics wrote. I have already mentioned that the nobility had to serve, but they could also serve in various ministries of the increasingly bureaucratic Russian Empire - sometimes for very little money and basically as clerks. Which would by the end of the Empire lead to a class of people that were officialy noble, but would scrap a rather pityful existence while some 'simple' merchant could actually throw a whole lot of money around. 'Voevoda' is very much a term in the Russian language that people would easily understand, but it is probably more connected to the cossaks who argueably lived more freely and were allowed to carry weapons etc. In the times of the Empire the core of the army was also getting more and more formal rather than keeping the old feudal system with gathering and commanding the troops based on personal loyalties. I would rather say that boyars were the old school nobility, but we can always agree to disagree ;)

    • @Kadwid
      @Kadwid 10 місяців тому +2

      @MotorbreathChannel it's fine, I appreciate your deep dive into the nuance of the meaning behind the term. I did know it means as much as "of boyars" and now we have a good explanation of what that entails from your comments. I didn't do any extensive study on that, and approximated it to something general and simple. Now I hope everyone reading the exchange gets that there is a lot of subtlety in words we use in our languages.
      At some level I feel it's a matter of stylistics, but happy to defer to the native speaker of where the word comes from, of course.

Your games affected and changed my life in so many ways. I still keep the hope you will return one day. I would kickstart it as long as needed. Do think game creators are responsible for the ideas intentionally or unintentionally conveyed through their work? Did you have any specific vision of bringing this questions to the players for their personal evaluation and possible evolution of ideas in your games? Or shortly - can or should games be more than just “entertainment”?

    Your observation that Interplay didn't have too many close professional groups is an interesting insight. I have people who I work with very closely at my job (software, but not games) today, and other observers of that who are more experienced than I am have remarked that it's kind of a "special, rare thing." Since you still have quite a bit more experience working than I do, I'm curious if you've seen other tight-knit professional people at other companies or in other settings? I mean, the three of you who made Troika are obviously very unique because you all started a company together and were all involved in the things that make us interested to watch your channel in the first place. Barring the three of you, how common do you think it is for people to actually work closely together? Have there been any companies that you've worked at that have had more of those kinds of working relationships? Did they do anything to encourage that sort of collaboration that didn't come off as forced or fake?

    Hey Tim. I'm not sure if there's any story here, but I had an Arcanum question for you. I'm sure that I speak for many players when I say that the Half-Ogre origin story in the game was some of the most memorable content. I remember being really bummed out that after the jaw-dropping discovery in that story the plotline just vanishes. It seems like there could've been so much more content added after your discoveries on the island. Was the abrupt ending intentional (e.g. to drive home the coverup vibe) or did time constraints or some other hurdle cut the story short?
    Regardless of how I felt after finishing the Half-Ogre content, I'm still amazed that this random, seemingly insignificant side quest dropped such a bomb! For a side story like that to illicit such a powerful response really shows Troika's passion and attention to detail.

    Troika chocolate is norwegian, I like it, but I get that it's a bit weird. Raspberry jelly, dark chocolate and marzipan. Sort of like the "Fry's Turkish Delight" bar from UK. Have you tried the norwegian "Hobby" bar? You probably wouldn't like that either. But the plain "Freia Melkesjokolade" is good. So much better than the sickly sweet Swedish "Marabou Mjølkchoklad". And that Hershey crap😂

    Hey Tim, have you seen that Fallout is actually being made into a TV show? Have you been keeping up with it? I just saw that they credited Todd Howard as the creator of Fallout in the trailer and that stood out to me and made me wonder... what are your thoughts on everything?

    • @cam5816
      @cam5816 10 місяців тому +1

      I just remembered that they also said the show is exciting because they are going to be “taking the Fallout series to a place it’s never been before…Los Angeles”. 🙁
      It’s kinda made me a little bummed out. I’m excited to see the series make it on TV but extremely worried because this will be what the general public will probably know the Fallout universe for. Besides the fact that modern TV is already on a bad streak, I’m really worried that Bethesda might worsen things by having the show writers make Fallout’s story into just a chipper stroll in a ‘quirky’ wasteland like what they’ve been changing the games into lately. It’s sad for me to think that the dark, serious tone and elements that are the roots of Fallout might just be cut and done away with altogether to the public eye in the near future. I love your initial vision and it really bothers me how shallow and happy-go-lucky they’ve been making the franchise world seem when it is set in a post-apocalyptic world that has been destroyed by military expansion, greed, and paranoia. The series used to tackle mature themes and really give a stark glimpse into the human condition; exposing the dark and complicated realities inherent to society and what life could be like living in a dead world filled with desperate people as well as the unchanging ugly nature of those with power over others and the people who often seek it-even when their throne is only made of scraps in a junkyard.
      The world used to be an ugly place in Fallout. Even when you win the game, you lose. There is no real happy ending in this universe. There can’t be. Sure life has gone on but the world is still dead and the flaws of mankind that killed it before only continue to persist in the setting of its ashes. The series used to be so much deeper and full of heart. The foundation you made for the universe was ingenious and chock-full of so much potential for greatness and incredible stories to tell about the nature of man and the grey areas of life and survival. I’ve been a fan ever since I was little and it’s the only universe I’ve ever actually been so invested in and excited about. It’s been a constant love of mine by my side through so many different stages of my life and it has had a tremendous influence on the person I grew up to be and the way I came to think about things and consider the world around me; inspiring even passions of mine like reading and writing, things that my family and friends know me for today.
      It’s going to be more than disheartening if I have to see the soul of Fallout abandoned for shallow, corporate-approved, ‘family friendly fun’ with standard quirky inoffensive humor designed by corporate heads, marketing graphs, HR, and modern politics instead of developers with a real passion for gaming who wanted to make something great of their own and the next generation who loved the original and wanted to continue its story and wanted to do it Justice in keeping its spirit.
      I fear that Hollywood and the gaming world as a whole have both become hollow as they have been consolidated into a handful of major mega-corporations fighting over assets and committed to popularity over substance; conforming everything to trends instead of making new ones. My passion for movies and games has waned tremendously over recent years and if Fallout, of all things, becomes another casualty to modern media, it’ll be hard for me not to feel hopeless about the future. Especially when the game studio itself is actually involved in the writing of the show.
      Fallout is the only franchise I’ve ever really loved and this will be the first and only time most people, including my friends and family, ever get to experience it for themselves. But I’m scared that it’s first appearance on the Big Screen is going to end up like watching a public execution for me. That I’ll never really get to share my passion with anyone and have the opportunity for them to see how great it really was or understand why I had always loved it so much. That my friends and family will never actually know it as the same world I grew up with. I’m trying not to be pessimistic but I’m genuinely worried. People close to me are actually waiting in anticipation for it and trying to get me hyped but it is going to be a nervous watch for me.
      So yeah, I’m feeling very conflicted myself. But what are your thoughts on the state of everything? How do you feel about what’s become of your franchise as of late and what have you been thinking lately leading up to this? Do you have any insights or predictions? Any hopes or ideas? I’d be really curious to hear your side of things and maybe get a better idea of what it means to you. I really wish they made you involved in the writing and production. …Or maybe they did??? I have no idea, but I’d really love to hear your thoughts. It’s got to be interesting seeing the story you created is going to make it to the big screen.

    Hmm, there is no lead horse, but isn't there still a carriage driver? I suppose it follows as you said about no one discipline would lead. Yet they would all still need to be driven towards a singular goal.

    • @CainOnGames

    I was one of those who thought that Troika had more to do with socialism than that. The company structure emphasized proletarian equality, the logo reminded me of Soviet social-realistic paintings and your games often feature marxist ideas. Another incorrect assumption.

    Oh, my sweet summer child. “Troika” has a far more insidious meaning than a carriage or any given trinity.
    No, troika is a colloquial name for a special kind of judicial court that was introduced in the early years of Soviet regime to combat “contra revolutionaries”, usually by means of expedited approval of executions by its three members.
    Recommended reading is The GULAG Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Skazka o Troike by the Strugatsky brothers.
