After years of carrying on regulator sets, we did some research and there is no real reason to do so - pad it well in a reg bag and pack in the center of your dive bag - no issues on the last couple of trips and a LOT lighter for the carryon. Specifically when we do remote trips, we bring two sets each - that equals a lot of weight. Carryons always have computers, lithium batteries, camera bodies, laptops, etc. It's already heavy enough with all that stuff.... By the way, there are great battery cases out there that can keep your lithium batteries safer as well. Pad the more delicate stuff in the middle of the dive bag surrounded by exposure gear and such and you should be fine - yes we use airtags as well - just that extra piece of mind, when you get on the plan and see the dive bag is also on the plane ;)
This was a great question to answer. I used to travel weekly for work. United lost my luggage 16 times in one year. I carry on my regular set up always.
Regulators, computer and mask come with me in my carry-on. We've recently been on a trip to Indonesia and one of our dive bags was lost for 5 days. Luckily the resort had really good rental equipment so no major issues.
Kevin was in Indonesia in Jan, 2024, to Lembeh Strait, and of 22 in the group, no one lost/delayed any bags but his on the first day. He was in Singapore for 2 days so got it before flying onwards. A
Believe it or not but I’m able to pack my gear and my wife’s gear in my carry-on and backpack. We have it packed tightly and love the fact that we do not have to wait for our bags at the airport. Means we can get to the reefs quicker :)
Hey Alec loving the channel it's as informative now as it was at the start. I recently introduced a friend of mine to the channel she is doing a divemaster internship next summer in Cyprus and a tech tip on essential equipment for a divemaster would really help her if you could make one
I travel frequently around SE Asia. I only bring my computer in carry on. Most airlines in Asia have a strict 7kg limit for carry on (Some airlines will allow 14kg for additional charge). If my dive bag doesn’t show up, it doesn’t matter whether I have a few items or none with me. The inconvenience is the same.
I generally split thigs up I combine my luggage with my wife so we only have one checked bag and we bring masks, computers, regs, batteries, and camera gear as carryon. The rest of the gear goes in the chcked bag as I can rent that stuff if need be. Weight is sometimes an issue so I might add some heavier stuff to the carryon although knives and scissors and larger liquids need to be checked. My travel insurance includes coverage for dive gear rental if bags are delayed.
Regulators set, backup computer and dive mask go in our Carry on, main computer (Mk3i) on wrist. All other gear is in a hardcase suitcase with apple AirTag.
You can but if your bag is delayed/lost, most every dive shop in the Caribbean has full replacement gear. Maybe save your shoulders and just bring duty free. A
I've done about a dozen dive trips, the only thing I carry on is my prescription mask. It's the only thing I couldn't rent on location easily. I guess I take my computer also but that's because it's a Garmin and my everyday watch anyway.
Have a Suunto D6i on my wrist... always pack my reg in my carry on and my mask.... everything else I can hire... but those 2 things are my 'must haves'
I would recommend regulators, divecomputer and camera being packed at the carryon, maybe mask too. Beautiful, divecomputer Alec, I wonder which divecomputer you wear.
I would carry-on my mask which fits me perfectly, dive computer, one change of clothes, toiletries and personal meds--in case my checked bag is lost. That would make a very light carry-on.
i bring my wetsuit and reg in my carry on, mainly to save weight in my packed scuba/clothes bag. also the wetsuit protects the regs. my regs have nylon hoses rather than rubber so they wrap up better. i wear my dive computer. 9 times out of 10 they make me open at security, no big deal but i have to stuff it backin.
On delta I can fit my plate, wing, reg, computer, mask and fins+ clean unders, toothbrush and a set of dive skins. We are going tk Bonaire on jetblue which is much more stringent with their carryon size so Im carryingon my reg/dive computer , mask, toothbrush, set of dive skins. Im nervous as heck to not have my stuff with me but glad to hear your words of wisdom and will feel less worried about it after hearing your thoughts on the matter. Thanks.
Airport security refused my regulator as carry on once. Apparently hijacking an airplane with a second or first stage is an unacceptable risk in some geographies.
Thats why less strange looking metal in carry on can make travel easier. I'm still amazed at stories of travellers having to explain what a reg setup is to security. A
I always have my regs, computers, torches and masks in carry-on. It’s my main safety-critical gear and it’s several thousand bucks worth I don’t want to be arguing with an insurance company about.
On my last dive trip air transat lost one of my checked bags not my dive gear as i put mine and the gf dive gear in one bag, nope they lost the other bag the one with all our clothing. So we flew from montreal in February to cozumel. And lost all our warm weather clothing it was extremely unpleasant and air transat made it so difficult on the warranty stuff it we gave up and they lost customers for life
Next time i fly ill put an airtag in my stowed bags for sure, and if i dont see it with me prior to flying out ill sure let the air attendent know! I did not dived since covid but next time i can take a holiday im going back to the warms water, diving cold aint for me
You MUST have your lithium batteries (i.e. for flash light) on your carry on. In fact, carryon all your flashlight because when they xray your luggage the airline may take them out thinking there are batteries in them. Remember NO BATTERIES in luggages!
Most airlines have a maximum 100 Watt hour (Wh) rating. Air Canada's rules are: 2 lithium ion batteries with a rating of 100 but not exceeding 160 Wh for carry on. A
I think there is a difference between dive safety gear and delayed/lost checked luggage. In 60+ years of diving, don't know of anyone who died from a delayed dive bag. My wife had her bags delayed but we dived anyway. Does make you appreciate your own gear over rentals. Thanks for the comment. A
I always take my regulators and computer with me in my carry-on and the rest goes in a locked tote with a GPS tracker
I do the same plus the batteries for my lights.
Same here. Mask also.
Same here
Those apple air tags are a neat tool for tracking your bag anywhere.

Wow, even with their bag tracking app it was lost. You have a legitimate concern so fill up that carry on.

That was our problem. We had a short transfer in Singapore and the bag didn't make it onto the flight. Kevin made a good choice 😄

Will add that to my ideas list for a future video. Hope your DM candidate has a blast. Lots to learn about scuba and yourself.

A good point about dive travel insurance, many now cover delays/rentals that were not covered years ago.
A
Never had a problem. Leave behind my weights and tanks and carry on my computer and regulator unit
Some folks are like you are just lucky. I know others who it seems delayed luggage is mandatory on each trip.

Kevin would not loan me his Mk2i for this video. You drop it once and some people never forget it!!!

We're scheduled on a Caribbean cruise in December. First cruise ever. Thinking of having both regs with-computer on carry-on.

It's a Suunto i took out of the Scuba 2000 display case! Mine is an Oceanic but forgot it to bring it.

i find its best to pack two scuba tanks and my weight belt into my carry on bag !
What about the compressor??? Need air when you land.

Vacations are to relax, so go light, use apple air tags for bag tracking and have fun. Love Bonaire so have a great time.

If you're very comfortable with carrying that, meaning young and fit, go for it. My old back says just carry on my passport and a pillow!!

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter well I am well into my 60s👌

I'm just buying my own gear and was wondering about purchasing a solid dive luggage vs soft and put my regulator in carryon.
Search my videos as I did one on soft vs hard dive cases. Will give you ideas before making a decision on which way to go.

someone can say : "extremely rarely does someone need first aid and oxygen on dive boat, but we always carry it just in case"

A lot of countries will make you take the computer with you on board because of the lithium battery.
Heard that too. In my travels, no one asked about dive computer batteries (built in), just laptops.
A
computer + reg + bc + swimming clothes. that's all I take in the carry-on
Must be a small BC my friend.

Regs and computer for me. Everything else goes in hold.
Only thing i would carry today is my prescription mask. Anything else a dive shop can replace.

Totally agree with the mask but regs are pretty much the same everywhere. Maybe save your shoulders with a lighter bag.

The only two pieces of gear I carry on with me is my computer and my underwater camera
Kevin take two key items onboard, prescription mask and bacon!

Anyone have a rebreather in their carry on? Or were you forced to put it under the plane.
Never heard of one in carry one due to the tanks having to be opened.

August the 6 ? 😮 are you time travelling 🧭 😅😊
I was Aug. 6, 2024 when we shot this. Wish i could time travel, BACK in time.
