The 'Sorta Faux Fur' was from Intercal, a company that makes shorn wool into 'fur' with a velvet like weaving process. I used this Alpaca for the hat: shop.intercalt... - I got the smallest option, the 1/6th yard one.
I also got a 1/6th yard of this mohair, which I plan to make into yet another hat! shop.intercalt...
The black/grey faux fur I used for my mockups was probably from Joann Fabrics if I had to guess.

I think the silly winter hat could be even more winter hatified if you added cord to the bottom front corners with tassels or poms at the end - the kind that you'd use to tie under your chin
Also, I might make something similar at some point, I've been thinking about witch hats lately, and thinking about what would be practical as a head covering when flying, and a wide brimmed hat just doesn't make much sense, ya know, it'd fly right off! Something more like this (again with the chin strap) could still be counted as a "pointy" hat, but be more practical as a flight hat without going full on vintage aviation cap. I'm a fan of Discworld style witching, and one has to both keep up appearances as well as be practical.

with the pattern you can easily go witchy/elfy if you extend the point in the back so far that it starts hanging down. you might need to move it up a little.. so the pattern wouldn't be 4 times the same shape any more though. propably 2 shorter spapes and two longer ones at the sides... haven't thought this through. just speculating.

OMG! A better winter winter hat is exactly what I am trying to make at this very moment. Glasses, pierced ears, and a sensitivity to cold on my eardrums giving me headaches. Top that off with living in a sub-arctic climate (most of Canada). You have not made a silly hat, but a perfect one. I also think it would make a great hood too.

Those hats are adorable! What i usually do when i work with fur (works great with faux fur, unsure about real fur) is to first brush the pieces and then use painters tape to stick the hairs away from the seam. If you then sew carefully, you barely need to do any brushing for the seams to dissapear!

My mother (seamstress for 60+ years, started in upholstery but does garment construction and alterations as well.) says if you don’t have a needleboard for ironing velvet try a thick and fluffy towel. She says it works just fine not to crush the pile but have another thin (like four sack towel) towel between the iron and the velvet if you aren’t working with a natural fiber velvet.
Personally I haven’t tried it, I haven’t sewed velvet much but I’m looking at a bolt of emerald green velvet that I have to turn into clothes and no needleboard in sight so…

I know that this involves way less animal harm, than normal fur. But it is not that great to wear anything that looks like fur (origin doesn't really matter), because it keeps the trend alive that wearing fur is fashionable. And a lot of people are not very good at distinguishing between real and fals fur in shops. So wearing fake fur still contributes to fur farms

The pom pom hat made me smile, but I like to be invisible (probably due to my rudimentary social skills) in public. The red and white hat is so luxurious looking but somewhat thematic of the season. Two comments. First, another way to stitch (or sew) two of the fluffy pieces together would be to use some "tape" (which actually doesn't need to be actual tape) to join them. Start by sewing the tape to one piece of the fluff on the backside near the edge where you want to connect the two pieces, then sew the tape to the second piece of fluff. You can even connect two pieces with quite a jagged edge using this method.
Second, one modification I would add to those hats would be some way to tie the two corners by your chin together. That way, if you are walking into the wind, you can tie those corners together which would help keep you warm. Neat hats.

All the hats are so very cute. They look warm and are very sensible. What a great way to keep warm and not have to mess up your hair style.

Oh this is amazing. I loathe hats because I have sensory issues and having tight things pressing on my skin is agonizing. I also get migraines if things are pressed against my head so normal hats squish my ears and glasses into my head so I just don't wear them and I live in Canada so that is not always great. I may try and make something like this because it looks like it has more room for ears and hair (I usually have it in a messy bun) and is more covered than just wearing a hood from a hoodie which will blow off and isn't very warm. I never really loved winter hat shapes either. This looks more hood-like so I think it would work much better for me. Thanks for this Morgan :)

I made a hat for the same reasons plus having very sensitive ears many years ago. But mine needed a brim because of my eyes sensitivity to the sun, especially at -20c with wind . I ended up designing a hat with a brim with earflaps . By curving the ear flaps, interlining with tinsulate, and lining with soft fuzzy fabric i ended up with my perfect hat. Plus i used bright bold colours and pink leopard print fuzzy to line the brim. Then my daughter borrowed it to take to school and it disappeared. So i made a few more.
I like yours very much and may make one like that too now that i don't have to look more conventional for work because i am retired. I am just trying to figure out how to add a sun brim to it.

Ooh, I like that idea, I'm sun sensitive too, I pretty much don't leave the house without a ball cap on (also keeps rain and snow off eyeglasses) which makes ear protection ... well, goofy looking. Not that I care most of the time, but now and then I do. Figuring out how to put a brim on this might be the answer...

What a brilliant solution!! I've been trying to figure out a pattern that had room for my bun! I've looked at and discarded a crazy numbers of patterns. There's a lot of hair! Finding something that has both room for hair and will keep ears warm has been difficult. Though admittedly I kept getting distracted by life and other higher priorities so it's not like I had dedicated tons of time. Still it's been on my mins for years. Mostly while standing in the school yard feeling the whip through and noticing how darn horrible my hard where!
Thank you for doing all the hard work!!!

For matching seams, instead of sewing from the seam out and/or deciding whether to rip out the entire seam to try again, you can just sew that one part, try again as many times as you like, then sew the whole seam when you’re ready. This is a trick I learned to not tear my hair out doing “original hems” in alterations.

I had a winter hat that was knitted and had ear flaps with these long “ribbons” and tassels, so you could tie it around your neck, when I was a kid. It was factory made so not handmade. I also had a Davy Crockett style fur hat with a genuine raccoon tail that was attached with a snap button, I loved that hat but couldn’t wear it to school because another kid kept pulling off the tail to annoy me, and the teacher said I should wear a different hat so he wouldn’t be tempted to pull on the tail.
There are these traditional Peruvian hats with ear flaps, I suppose I could try making one of those?

Oh, man. This totally ends up looking like a bizarrely charming cross between those lettice caps and the open hoods from the century before. I am so excited to see how WELL this turned out!
My current 'funny hat' project is adapting a Mennonite cap pattern to get back to something more like the 17th century (Dutch and English) caps that inspired it. I have my hair cut in the mid-17th century style, so I want something I can wear over my (long) hair in the back without cronching my side curls.
Interestingly, this version of the hat may be functionally similar, in that there's not a lot of pressure on the hair, in front. And it is starting to get QUITE cold, here in Montana. I may have to add another iron to the fire. ❤
