Because I didn't talk about it much in the video I'd like to explain my career to people who do not know me - my experience was at Ubisoft, I also worked on indie games, and as a Mojang partner, and I also make mods for video games such as Minecraft, Skyrim, COD, and even Halo.
Also at 7:44 I said "Videos" but I meant to say "Studios"
*Edit:* Wow I posted the video to reddit and uploaded it only got 40 views, couple days passed. Thought I missed the algorithm and people just didn't care, but now I woke up and have nearly 400 overnight! Glad people are seeing it.

I liked your calm and neutral take. You put it well that 343 just doesn’t have what it takes because other studios have shown to do just fine with their own issues and less time. 343 aren’t monkeys on a keyboard but clearly they aren’t good enough for the task at hand.

Your insight as a game developer was incredibly refreshing. I feel like we don't get enough developers weighing on issues like this whether it's about the lackluster Halo Infinite experience or the modern gaming industry practices as a whole. Your video was eloquent without diving feet first into the hell of toxicity. At the end of the day there is no sugar coating it; 343 needs to step up and do better (that tweet does not absolve them of the shortcomings of Halo Infinite).
I do want to add that Xbox Game Studios has been struggling these past few years. I watched a ReviewTechUSA video on this issue. He posted recently about how a lot of the studios Microsoft acquired are now facing delays, issues with upper management, complete rewrites/overhauls, and a consistent trend of toxic work cultures that lead to staff quitting.
Which was somewhat eye opening for me because for the longest time I thought 343 Industries was just not a very good developer but now I see the issues run far deeper and higher on the upper management ladder.

6:58 There isn't a nice way to dismiss over 10 years of failures, broken promises, and excuses. 10 years of constructive feedback, and 4 attempts to create a Halo experience resulted in the ability to break the last promise of co-op split-screen and expect to get away with it. #Fire343

This is the issue with 343, they do a terrible job and then blame everyone but themselves… Sounds like politics

Thanks for an interesting perspective! One point worth clarifying is that Junyszek's tweet was not actually in response to someone criticizing Halo Infinite, but rather asking why modern games in general have less content. So I don't think it's entirely fair to say that he said this as an excuse for criticism; it was a genuine answer to a genuine question, although it does indirectly make excuses for Halo Infinite.
While 343 definitely needs to get their shit together, I don't think the success of other games is proof that delays like this one are entirely avoidable or just due to lack of talent. Yes, a lot of games succeed, but it is also true that over the last few years there have been a growing number of delays and incomplete AAA games. If 90% of AAA games used to release on time, but now only 60% do (I don't know the actual numbers, but you get my point), that seems to be indicative of a deeper issue, because this change is unlikely to be due to there being less talent industry-wide. So while a lot of the blame goes to 343, it seems to me that there must be broader industry-wide factors that we should consider if we want things to change in the industry in general.
In any case, thanks for the thoughts! I totally understand wanting to take part in these conversations but feeling like no one will hear you, so good on you for making this :)

In the video I agreed their were industry wide struggles and hurdles - more than their use to be, games are harder to make. The reason it doesn't absolve 343i is because every triple A dev must face these hurdles, and many overcome them, 343i can't. I don't personally see a reason why another studio can overcome it and 343i can't, I don't see a valid reason they can fail to overcome adversary in this industry when other IPs with less budget with more ambitious goals have succeeded.
The only way this happened is that the higher ups at 343i - game directors and such were mismanaged and/or lack talent, and had their devs prioritize the wrong things for too long, then missed the mark by a lot. They've continuously pumped out games that were simply just unfun, barley like Halo or were sort of fun but completely baron with minimal content and awful player retention due to a lack of real engaging progression systems. I'm not talking about the game developers who are told what to do, most of them were contractors anyways I'm speaking of people who are controlling what they do, what happens with the game, which is far less people.

@@Hybred That's fair - it definitely agree that 343 looks like it has been severely mismanaged and has a responsibility to solve their issues. Oh boy would I like it if we could have a look behind the scenes to see what went wrong. That said, it seems to me that on top of individual studios finding ways to overcome problems, there may be a need for industry-wide solutions. Individual studios overcoming challenges is good, but doesn't necessarily solve the underlying problem the industry is facing. But I really don't enough about the subject to be sure or to suggest concrete ideas lol

It's incredibly frustrating to see so many studios defend their mistakes not by owning up to them, but by blaming everything around them, including the community at times. Battlefield 5 and eventually 2042 saw this too, treating people as if they're stupid to want a better game than last time. If circumstances make it that impossible to develop a good game, then I'm more than happy to not waste my money and I'll stick to older ones.
Specifically with Infinite, they had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with a one year delay, came out with nearly nothing in terms of content, and seasons get stretched apart with little to nothing of substance. Whole games are programmed in the time they take to add skins or a gamemode. It's so far past reasonable, and it's not getting better either.

Interesting perspective and some excellent points made. I suppose the question we need to ask 343 in response to their claims of a difficult development environment is why they aren't equipped to deal with that as a AAA studio tasked with shepherding Microsoft's flagship gaming IP. I'm sure I'm not alone in finding it hard to believe that their budget wasn't limitless 🤔

That's exactly right at this point 343 is literally throwing their hands up and saying "it's to hard guys". But the fact is that some companies can do it and 343 can't. They have the inability to develop a proper Halo game and not just once but every goddamn time. At what point is the difficulty of the task is a good excuse for failing to do your job.

What do you want to do in game development? Graphic design, writing, level design, UI, building gameplay mechanics, creative directing, etc

    • @austinherrington7049
      @austinherrington7049 2 роки тому

This answer comes with 2 parts:
      1. What specifically do you want to put 10,000+ hours into? Programming? Lighting art? Design? VFX? Production? QA?
      2. If you’re not currently putting together work at the same level of quality as current games, you’re not going to get hired without experience. Your best path into the industry with no experience is to take a QA job for a studio, preferably not through a staffing agency/third party. Getting into a studio while you’re working on your portfolio gives you a chance to get feedback from other developers, and has historically been a path for new game developers to get into the industry.
If you’re going to make games, the important thing to understand is that it’s going to consume your life. To work in this industry you have to be really good. There are 10% as many jobs as there are people trying to find jobs in the industry.
Make sure you’re networking. Make friends at studios. Show them your work. Get feedback. Prove to them that you can make the next assassins creed or elder scrolls or whatever. That’s how you’re going to break into the industry. It’s all about who you know. As a newbie you’ll never get interviews for developer positions without referrals.
College can be good, but if you go to college for games, know that you’ll still teach yourself most of what you learn, and that the degree isn’t going to guarantee you a job.

Sorry for the long comment, but I agree with all you had to say. I can sympathize with the developers who just do what they're told. Making games is hard, but it's no excuse. All you can do is do better next time.
I'm just tired of devs excusing bad behavior. They have no problem crunching hard working devs, working them to the bone. They have no problem lying to people's faces pre-launch and making false promises they can't keep and gaslighting people that call them out. They have no problem adding dozens of cosmetics to the store and expecting people to sit there and pay out the ass, drip feeding people content.
But they want us to feel bad, while simultaneously continuing to throw people in hamster wheels. No. I'm not dealing with it anymore. With all the other games I could be playing that are much better, I don't have patience to just sit and wait for developers to get their shit together.
It's not my job as a consumer to make excuses for failure and give money out of sympathy. All I can do is either buy or not buy. It is simply the developers' job to make the best product possible under their conditions; otherwise, what the hell are they spending these exorbitant budgets on with these major studios with hundreds of people working in them then?

Even if the most apolitical gamer simply wants to play Halo Infinite for what it is, the gameplay is solid-enough. If the forced SBMM 50/50 win:loss doesn't fuck you. The Desync will. You cannot improve in this game because your shots don't register. You cannot improve if you're a Diamond 3, but get stacked with 3 Gold 1s. You cannot improve if you're throwing games for flag-carrier kills in order to progress through the only means of content unlock. Every moment of this game is serving to remind you that you are being abused.

Data shows the average controller player has a higher KD than the average MnK player, due to aggressive bullet magnetism controller has.
I think theirs some games where MnK is advantaged due to weak AA and controller is advantaged due to strong AA, it's hard to perfectly balance and honestly I'm fine if it slightly leans towards controller users but I don't personally think the game is better on MnK, the aim mechanic sort of feels clunky on mouse, Halo isn't traditionally a PC game and the bullet magnetism is quite strong on controller.
