I was a PFC in Germany in 1966 and was so impressed watching these come and go that I took the test to be a Warrant officer and flight school. I passed but chickened out. I was a driver for a Captain and that was easier than going to Vietnam and flying. Kind of regret my decision but I’m 75 now and I might not have come home if I would have flown.

I was a medic in Vietnam. Decades later I was on a golf course in Ohio when a Huey flew over very low. Had NOT heard that sound since the 71st Evac Hosp, SVN. I went down on one knee and the tears just burst forth. No way to explain that to a contemporary who hadn't shown up for the dance.

We got to go to an airshow in the boy scouts where they had a Huey, you could see his dad get emotional. Greatest feeling in the world. My dad was in Nam and flew in one of these. I felt a little like I was there too. On the way back the pilot needed more time so he flew us around. The best part was when he flew over a river. Doors open! Will never ever forget!

Career (and still serving/flying) Army Aviator here. I had the honor and distinct privilege to get to work on these fine machines in the 90s, at my first unit in Heidelberg, Germany. I was originally a 68B (turned 15B), Engine technician, then later went to Warrant Officer school to fly Chinooks. Nothing like being 20 years old again, laying on the engine deck of Huey at idle, adjusting the fuel control with a screwdriver. The Chinook as definitely become the modern day iconic military helicopter, especially since it has shown it's worth during the past 20 years of desert combat... but the Huey will forever rein as king of the rotors. The "wap wap" of those blades and whine of the tail rotor, should bring a tear to the eye and puff of the chest to any Veteran out there. Thanks to the ladies and gentlemen that keep these wonderful machines and piece of history, alive and flying!!

The skill of that pilot reminded me of W.C. Wood, the now deceased but fondly remembered, Arkansas National Guard father of an old girlfriend of mine who worked on Hueys and told me about watching his pilots compete with each other hovering over an empty 50 gallon fuel drum stood on end , placing the tip of a skid on the end of the drum and rotating around the drum so deftly that they didn’t push it over or hit the ground with the tips of their rotor blades! I would have liked to have seen that. God bless all those who designed, built, piloted, flew in, repaired and maintained those beautiful, living machines. Tim Page, the legendary VietNam war photographer, who was anti-war, when asked about the tendency of humans to glorify and romanticize war responded “You can’t take the romance out of a Huey. It’s not possible.” Crew Chief to pilot, “Coming through hot, sir!” Page wrote that when he was down in the steamy delta he couldn’t wait to hitch a ride on one, up, up into the cool and when he was on one he couldn’t wait to get off the terrifying thing, back to the “safety” of the ground. I imagine many a hot, exhausted and scared, young soldier or marine experienced the same feelings of exhilaration and terror.

As you see, the pilot applied collective and corrected the cyclic position so the main prop wasn't tilted forward anymore.

I might be corrected on this but - a chopper pilot explained to me why an approaching Huey makes the loud ''wop-wop" sound and yet when flying away this decreases a lot. Supposedly it is due to "leading edge" vortex... each blade 'collides' with the vortex of the last blade and the sound travels forward for most part. Seemed to make sense as I had always wondered.

As a mechanic that works on the new models of these aircraft, the venom, my anxiety levels were through the roof while that guy was standing right next to tail rotor on startup. The crew on this aircraft break so many mannerisms that your supposed to uphold due to safety and it's terrifying.

Yeah that was hard to watch how many times he walks back by the tail rotor, and also walking on the uphill side of the aircraft while it is moving.

It never ceases to amaze me about two things ...first is in movies or TV shows someone can drive a car without crashing while talking face to face with the passenger for lengthy periods ..Also in this regard how they come rushing out and get an aircraft , especially a helicopter and get it off the ground in seconds ...These beauties take at least several minutes before flight is remotely possible and safety checklists are carried out for every single flight ..These beautiful birds are a very special piece of kit and this video is fascinating Thank you ...

Thank you I had a good time recording this event. I fly in a helicopter almost every day and even when I get in my car I sometimes find myself running a checklist. And by the way when you see in a movie people driving cars, the cars are usually on a trailer being towed behind a camera vehicle

Some of my favorite aviation sounds in no particular order. Huey H1 approaching to land, P 51 Mustang in a dive at a full throttle air show center, any radial engine start up and Blue Angle F 18 high speed fly byes for the raw sound of speed 👍🏻

    • @mcahill135
      @mcahill135 Рік тому +1

My favorite aircraft sounds are: The P-51 Mustang, Supermarine Spitfire, and Hurricane. Merlin engine. 1200 HP, twelve cylinders of glorious noise. The F-104 Starfighter. That howl is so distinctive from all other jet fighters. Wicked. The UH-1 Iroquois (Huey), the sound that defined the 60s and the 70s. The B-1B Lancer (Bone) and the F-111 Aardvark (pigs that fly). THE sounds of freedom. The KC-135A Stratotanker with the J-57 engine. Roughly 2 minutes of water injection on initial takeoff was a crowd pleaser! The KC-135R with the CFM-56. Double your thrust, double your fun. In thrust we trust, as I flew this airframe for 29 years.

My ARNG unit in the early 1990s was still using UH-1H Huey choppers until 1992. As infantryman, we hopped rides in both Hueys and Black Hawks, whatever was available at the time -- as we were perhaps the last generation to use and cycle through both aircraft when they were operational. There's nothing like the stability and the sound of twin turbines on a Black Hawk that exudes nothing but raw power that can turn on a dime. But all truth be told, the whop-whop of the Hueys and the raw torque you feel on the floorboards is incomparable as well. The half dozen times we rode on Hueys were unforgettable.

May 29, 2023 is when I first caught it’s return of the Bell Huey UH-1. This was a nostalgic helicopter. I remember back from the first time I went to the lone tree cemetery in Fairview Ave, Hayward, CA, there were originally two helicopters in the ground. One being the Bell Huey and the other being bell 47-G. I watched them takeoff. It was amazing. Now there’s only one helicopter for Memorial Day. And over the years, I kept seeing Bell Huey on the graveyard from 2013?-2019. On 2019, this is the last time I’ve seen him before the pandemic started in 2020. From 2020-2022 there was no sign of the Bell Huey UH-1 anywhere due to Covid Storm. That is until 2023, when I heard a distinguish sound from my room and have to go outside and see what’s that sound. And then I remembered, that sound. The beast. Bell Huey UH-1 has arrived at the lone tree cemetery. This helicopter has now returned to the Memorial Day program. I’ve caught this helicopter flying around over my house before it landed on the cemetery. I have got extremely hyped about this and want it to go see it. I’ve took a look at this helicopter and it looks really beautiful and gives me the chills. And then I’ve watched it startup and takeoff from the cemetery. But that’s not all, I’ve see it overflying above me. This helicopter is one of the best helicopters not just the us but all over the world. Without Bell Huey, not only lone tree cemetery, but Memorial Day won’t be the same.

I was lucky enough to have grown up about 30 miles from Ft. Rucker which is the Army rotor wing training center. How many times I have heard and seen this particular type helo. Matter of fact name a model regularly used in their inventory and it has flown around here. Great place to visit is the staging fields where they do hover, fly around and auto rotation practice. It's even cooler when they do it at night.

Funny how a clip a couple years old pops up to view. Now certain helicopters have very distinctive sounds (Hawks, Dolphins, Cobras and a Chinook), but one that’s tops is a Huey.
Maybe I’m partial to a Huey for my reasons, but it’s got the best sound of a flying helicopter. Now the sound of a Cobra or Apache sending steel downrange is awesome too.

When I was a kid, there was a lot of military aircraft flying their path over me. I'd run out the house when I heard one, to see what it was. That was decades ago. A year ago I was out of town shopping and leaving the store, and I heard a helicopter and couldn't contain myself. "That's a F--king HUEY!!!!!" I said out loud, in front of a bunch of random shoppers coming in and going out, looking at me with quizzical faces. It was still about a mile out and not in sight, but there is nothing like the sound of an inbound Huey.
