I was super surprised that I got this video out when I had been searching for examples myself and didn't see it. That is why I rushed this out. Now I know what Charlie felt getting the Gold Ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Well, I'd rather have a Golden Ticket but still...
Tim, wow that video boost is pretty darn impressive! Thanks for showing us the update of the features that Google is rolling out. I love how Google focuses more on the software side! The nearly pitch black area was pretty impressive given the fact that this coming from a smart phone. I agree, the non video boost was definitely a bit shakier and possibly more grain. The video boost was a bit noisier when you were doing a talking head. The Pocket 3 did great as usual! It certainly shows the 1 inch sensor is doing its job compared to the Pixel video boost. Thanks for the comparison, kinda makes me want a Pixel again :P
If you can, wait for the Pixel 10 in 2025. They are on track for a huge processor upgrade which will put them on track with Apple processors which will help significantly with overall and low light video performance. After watching the video back, I realized also that the Pocket 3 did have the advantage of the light from the screen so if I do a future comparison, I'll try and remember to cover it up. Still, that 1" sensor on it will likely continue to shine. The built it for lowlight, hence the low megapixel count.
For the selfie shoot, to make it more comparable, you can turn off the screen of the Osmo Pocket 3. I feel like it's shining some light into your face. The Pixel 8, without any light, doesn't have anything to boost ha ha. I'd be curious to see if there's a difference in Pixel Video Boost if there's tiny amount of light like that.
The video appears brighter, but there is still noticeable focus peaking. In terms of overall stabilization, the DJI OSMO 3 outperforms with its silky smooth capabilities. However, the Pixel 8 Pro with Video Boost excels in noise reduction, offering a significant improvement over the DJI OSMO.
I know, right? Simple first look video too. It took me less than two hours to get this out (after video processing was complete)! Most videos take a day to plan and film plus a day to edit and post with thumbnail, etc.

Are you experiencing this issue on the Pixel 8 Pro? Essentially, the 4K version cannot be located on the device, and sharing it via Google Photos for download is not possible

I haven't tested this but I have had issues editing the boosted 4K version in Google photos. So it would not surprise me if this were an issue as well. I can download either version of the video and do what I need to do with it from there separate from Google photos.
If I had to summarize: - if you record initially at 60fps you get more natural brightness (if you record at 30fps, there is hardly any difference in image brightness) - reduced characteristic grain in low-light recording (you get a little more sharpness) - reduced mini-shakes that may have been present in the original recording
This test was done at 30 FPS and I agree with everything except I did see increased brightness on the boosted videos except in areas where there was essentially zero light to work with.
I'll only use it in really lowlight to reduce the jitter associated with digital stabilization. I did some follow up videos that show this and I may do a dedicated video on it later.
I am not entirely sure, but I believe that the update is rolling out globally. I'm seeing in the comments of this video that there are a lot of people in the US that still haven't gotten it either.
I don't think the choppiness could be improved with this honestly ... It needs to be done on devices with hardware stabilization, unless they could pull off some crazy black magic like applying image unblur on every frame of the video while making it smooth...
The way the service works is a bit inconvenient. Is Google choosing when its available? If so thats less than ideal What if you have a high dynamic range scene and you think ill try to get this and use boost to lift my shadows or lower my highlights - and then Google just sees the scene as ok and doesn't boost it.
Let me clarify. I didn't see the feature turned on until I got prompted the first time and once you get prompted you will be able to enable it or disable it for any of your videos that you shoot in the future.
I'm wondering if you had the same experience I'm having. I received the update and in the pixel tips it shows the information about video boost but I have no option on the camera in the settings. Are you suggesting I tried to film a video in the dark to get it to activate? Thank you!
@monkeyboy9896 Yes. I had the same issue. OS and Camera App was fully updated but no option. I went into the dark and it prompted me to turn on night site/video boost. Now the option is there. I did not receive any updates between when it was not there and when it was not there related to the camera app or any Google related services. Maybe the AI waited until I went into the dark to make it more dramatic/hidden?
