@@BreakfastDP im SO glad you asked! Ive heard 2 versions of the American air dodge: 1) directional air dodge into stage or 2) horizontally directional air dodge to the ledge. 1 is generally bad because its seen more as a last resort panicky option 2 is a good option when trying to mix up your recovery, but is still punishable
@@SmashUltimateFITGMR imo the American air dodge is regarded as bad for the same reason any option is bad - because it is a habit your opponent can reliably predict and punish you for. this is where it gets it's name. it is a stereo type that american players often air dodge in when in disadvantage, but air dodging in is not always a bad option. it is only a bad option if you keep spamming it once your opponent catches on to your habit. the best way to improve upon this is to save replays where your opponent punished you multiple times for air dodging in and brainstorming different options you could have taken in that exact scenario with with your character. often times your opponent may stop their combo mid-way to read your American air dodge and punish. if this is your scenario, consider prioritizing landing, jumping away, air attacking, dodging in a different direction etc. instead of air dodging in every time. also consider the reason why you're having to resort to preforming an American air dodge. do you keep burning your jump in disadvantage leaving you with less resources? are you worried your opponent will take your jump so you dodge to save your jump? are you uncomfortable with choosing different options in disadvantage? or are you unaware of what different options you or your specific character have in disadvantage?

My two amiibo, Sephiroth and Joker, who are at Level 50, know how to air dodge and it's utterly terrifying to see them do that!
What do you think about the “American air dodge” to ledge? I’ve tried implementing it into my play but I get hard punished more often than not
