When he phrases "I'll cut your armies down/ and turn your heart" his endless struggle to try and keep her. ""I'll wait/ I'll lie awake" He's determined to get this person back. In my personal experience it's better to set a person free mentally, physically, emotionally so both parties can have better. Even though one might not. It hurts the heart to the core, cause I've walked both paths.
Reminds me of a ghost story I heard once. A girl dies in a wreck on the way back from her prom. People stop to pick her up and give her a ride home. When they get there, she disappears. It's her ghost trying to get home. She spends forever trying, but doesn't realize she's dead. That's it in a nutshell.

Reminds me a girl I used to love. Maybe still do, idk. I wonder where she is now and this song reminds me of her and conjures up bittersweet feelings.
