I just called a plumber (July 3, 2024) and they said it was a 2 hour job and LABOR was $370.00 ! then plus parts. After watching this video I think I might be able to do it. Thanks Jeff.
I did it yesterday. Easy, peasy! Do what Jeff did, and you'll be fine! I didn't have one of those huge wrenches, but still managed to get everything snug and leak-free. Save your money!

Everything is so simple until leaks develop and the realization sets in that there is more to this type of plumbing. Your vid is well made, thank you for sharing.
Jeff, Very clear explanation with good close up videos. This will help a lot of weekend warriors solve their issues. That big strainer nut wrench is awesome. I have always gotten by with my 16 inch Channelock pliers. But next time I see one on sale or at a yard sale I will snarf it up. The comment about the pipe joint comment on the threads helps with metal nuts and tailpieces, and especially with threaded tailpieces that go onto bathroom drains where the tailpiece threads into the popup assembly. On the others, the pipe compound is lubrication making assembly easier. If you go to plumbing supply houses to buy your sink strainer you can get them with real brass nuts instead of the pot metal cast nuts. The brass nuts hold up much better over time especially if something loosens up and there is a small leak that causes corrosion. One other point, do not overtighten plastic drain nuts. If they don't seal when firmly hand tightened, replace the washers and check the alignment of the parts. Keep the great information coming!

This video was EXTREMELY helpful!! I almost threw the friction washer away. I threw the glacier bay box away by accident and had nothing to refer to to install the drain. This was perfect. Thankyou!!
@@jeffostroff Yes that would be a great idea. I installed a double sink last night. A few days ago, I fixed the drains to the sink and made 2 piles of boxes. One to throw away and the other to keep instruction manuals and 1 of any duplicate boxes I had just in case I missed something. Well last night i took the drain apart and looked at the washer assuming it might be paper there to prevent the rubber from scratching or getting damaged, a protective layer. Right when I thought about tossing it, I looked for instructions & realized I threw both boxes away with the wrong pile. Something said look on UA-cam before I toss it. If I would have thrown them in the trash for my double sink I would have had double trouble. Your attention to detail is great. For this to be 10 years ago reminded me of what I say about not counting out informational things just because it's got some years on it. Sometimes integrity gets lost with modern info. Thank you for this video. I recently had a new stainless steel sink installed. The drains on both sides leaked, so I watched this video and decided to redo them myself. Not only had the installer not scraped off the excess putty underneath before threading the nut on, but he had also not used the friction washer. After I reinstalled them the proper way, neither side leaks. Just goes to show if you want something done right, do it yourself.
Thank you for a very informative video. I had this sink trap replaced by the last plumber but it started leaking and the reason no friction washer!!! So really appreciate your very detailed and great explanation. Thank you, Thank you.
Omg, the most effective and productive, plumbing video I have ever seen I'm an electrician so I'm going to attempt this lol. I cannot remove the sink strainer from the downspout whatsoever I have to use a sawzall it's 55 years old. Ty again
I spent too much time worrying about a sink drain wrench, when I should have paid more attention to the pvc pipes instead. Probably could have saved some money, used fewer pipes and less labor. Buy plenty of pipe and fittings- you can always take back what you dont need, which is less frustrating than not having what you need up front. I ended out making 3 cuts on different pipes with regular hand saw. Its all together now, and I'm much more knowledgable- thanks Jeff!
Excellent tutorial on kitchen drain strainer fix. The instructions were clear & concise along with a good job on the video presentation. I am sure this has helped many people taking on this job
I have to say, by far you are an extraordinary teacher. Your video is so detailed and clear. You address all questions one might have and you go over just in case something was missed. I simply admire your whole sequence and process of giving a tutorial. Thank you so much!! Super Thanks👏
I haven't done this in a while so I wanted a quick refresher but I've got to say this is an excellent video. So many tips and details, even how to seat threads easily like a pro. Kudos and thank you for putting such great content out.
Im doing this job tomorrow for the 4th time never done any plumbing before this sink as a matter of fact had to be clued in on plumbers putty and every time ive done exactly like you did minus the tool and 1 other piece that hasn't been shown in any other videos and ive watched @6 or 7 before I attempted it my 1st time just in case I could have another way if for whatever reason I couldn't do as they did in video and the 2nd time same sink as before i watched a few more for the tutorial since i messed up my 1st time but apparently I didn't figure it out the 2nd time either then the 3rd time no video was needed but I had to do a quickie for the 3rd one and didn't care much about it since i already got it wrong the first 2x just fake it til u make it 😅 or find a professional and here u are thank you. Your video is the only 1 that said and/or said anything about the friction piece so until now never knew what i was doing wrong but how would I know if I never seen it before had no idea i was missing a very integral role player and that i was missing parts im 100 percent this time will be the last time i have to fake this part of the job. Thanks for not leaving that friction piece out i would never had known what i was doing wrong even though I did exactly what I saw in every video aside from yours totally awesome
Bro thank for the vid!! Great vid!! Needed to replace mines . Last minute wifey decided lets upgrade .. Different set up just the three screws Koehler black set 60$ Oppose of the standard stainless steel one cheaper , and not to mention the video instruction But thank you again successful job !
Excellent instruction! Thank you, Jeff this will make the task go quickly. I would like to add one of my own tips, to save your back. Before you start, use a moving blanket or something similar as a platform to lie on. You could also use seat cushions, pillows, etc. The idea is to make them level with the bottom of the cabinet floor so you are lying down flat and not arching your back excessively.
hey This is my first time watching your site and I must say thank you. I'm an older female and I was struggling to repair my kitchen sink drain by myself. Your instructions for perfect very clear and understandable. again, thank you.
Thank you for explaining the function of the friction gasket! Never knew what it was supposed to be doing but your explained very clearly and it makes perfect sense! 👍
Great attention to detail. I didn't know that there was a special plumbers putty for corain, granite, marble, etc.. sinks. Also, the special sink wrench used to tighten evenly will help. Now I am going to try to fix this friggin' drain for the third time! Thanks dude! God bless you!
Thank you much, this is the 3rd video on this I have watched today. Yours is the ONLY one showing how to do it correctly. Others put that washer on top above the sink, and some used glued pipe instead of slip joints.
Thank you so much for all the time you put into this, all the explanations, and all the information. My wife noticed that the slip nut under our sink is corroded, and I need to make a repair. The information you've provided here is very helpful, thank you!
This tutorial was very helpful. I’m going to replace the drains and plumbing under my kitchen sink. You have answered most questions I’ve had and I feel pretty good about this DIY project.
I changed the drain last year in the kitchen but reused the copper pipes with compression fittings. I used plumbers putty under the top flange of the drain. Great. Video Jeff.
Thank you so much man my sink has been put together wrong and seriously messed up and Ive never been able to get help because of funds and I finally fixed it thanks to you.
Excellent instructional video. You are good to zoom in on steps that are glossed over. Very good for us homeowners who attempt to do plumbing. Haha. All the best!
This was extremely helpful. Especially the part about finding the threads by going counterclockwise till it clicks. Man… that’s seriously gold. There was a leak under the sink at the house we just moved into, I saw that whoever installed it didn’t remove the excess putty from underneath. It definitely caused problems.
Yes and as it turns out we really don't need to use the putty down there because it is the Teflon tape that actually solves the problem period so once you do that you can experiment with not putting the putty under there and I bet you won't have a leak.
My comment is for anyone who is super tight on money or who takes drain apart and realizes the stores close early on Sunday (me yesterday evening). My drain and the black gasket were still in good shape. The plumbers putty was disintegrated and there was no cardboard gasket to keep the black gasket in place. I figured out that silicone sealant works in place of plumbers putty. I traced the black rubber gasket on a cereal box cardboard and cut it out with an exacto knife to make a cardboard gasket. It worked great. The cereal box gasket kept the black gasket in place while tightening the drain up. Tested it this morning after letting the silicone sit for 12 hours. The drain works great, no leaks!
thanks a million Jeff, I had a leak and the old strainer threads were rusted so bad they broke but luckily I had a strainer and followed your instructions
Great video.. Guy explained and showed video so well …so people explain how to videos and leave out information assume you know..anyone can do this ..people that shoot How-to-videos should take note 😊
Great explanation on how to do this correctly. It was missing a step on myself by not cleaning the plumbers putty off the bottom first before putting up the nut which was giving me problems everything shifting so appreciate the info.
Thank you so much this really helped, I was having a hard time getting a plumber I am a woman and knew that there is not too much science involved thank you
Wow. Fantastic video. I was ready to give up, but thanks to you I got the job done. Flawless presentation, which not only gave the information, but made me really appreciate the important details.
Excellent and detailed tutorial. I would point out that the edges of the High Hat gasket can impede the flow of wastewater and trap food. An alternative is a brass tailpipe with a gasket below the shoulder of the pipe, this is compressed by the bottom nut. It provides a waterproof seal and provides full flow of waster water as well.
hey mate, just wanted to say cheers for this video - i installed a sink into my van today using this video (first time) and it works great!! you’re awesome!!
This was a very useful video - no frills, keep it simple and straightforward with accurate and clear descriptions of the functions of the different pieces and their role in the overall configuration. Thank you, Jeff. Question: after installing a dishwasher in my dual sink configuration...I experiencing drain backups. Does a dishwasher install require an air gap 'thing' to keep the system flowing?
The other sink should not back up. Did you watch our dishwasher install video from last year? we show you how to do the high side loop for the dishwasher hose? Also you might have a sewer clog somewhere down the line, we just cleaned out our kitchen sewer line last year, as it clogged a bit causing water to back into the 2nd sink. Often requires $150 visit from plumber to clear it out.
Good video and very informative. The only suggestion I have would be add pipe dope to both sets of threads on the basket strainer to help seal joints. There are also specialty wrenches for inside basket strainer to keep them from turning while you tighten the larger bottom nut, but I typically just put two screw drivers down through the top, in different holes, and turn them clockwise while I tighten the large nut with a large pair of pliers.
Good idea! Although, I usually don't recommend adding pipe dope unless you have a leak, these usually don't leak if you install them correctly. Also remember that pipe dope only gets applied to the male threaded part, not the female parts.

Thanks, got mine done, just a normal dad here... have a good one!
Awesome, thank you!
Excellent work Pete!
Thank you for a very informative video. I had this sink trap replaced by the last plumber but it started leaking and the reason no friction washer!!! So really appreciate your very detailed and great explanation. Thank you, Thank you.
Glad it helped
Wow, thank you!
I haven't done this in a while so I wanted a quick refresher but I've got to say this is an excellent video. So many tips and details, even how to seat threads easily like a pro. Kudos and thank you for putting such great content out.
Glad it was helpful Paul!
Glad to help Larry!
Bro thank for the vid!!
Great vid!!
Needed to replace mines .
Last minute wifey decided lets upgrade ..
Different set up just the three screws Koehler black set 60$
Oppose of the standard stainless steel one cheaper , and not to mention the video instruction
But thank you again successful job !
Excellent instruction! Thank you, Jeff this will make the task go quickly. I would like to add one of my own tips, to save your back. Before you start, use a moving blanket or something similar as a platform to lie on. You could also use seat cushions, pillows, etc. The idea is to make them level with the bottom of the cabinet floor so you are lying down flat and not arching your back excessively.
hey
This is my first time watching your site and I must say thank you. I'm an older female and I was struggling to repair my kitchen sink drain by myself. Your instructions for perfect very clear and understandable. again, thank you.
Glad I could help Janice!
Thank you for explaining the function of the friction gasket! Never knew what it was supposed to be doing but your explained very clearly and it makes perfect sense! 👍
Thank you for the updated video! This is SO much better than the previous one!
Thank you so much!!! I know NOtHING about kitchen plumbing and with your video it came out perfectly
Glad I could help!
Wow! Thanks! I feel like i can do this myself. I am a single lady (old lady at that). But you made this look doable. GREAT video!
The best video I have ever seen. Covered all the details....
Great attention to detail. I didn't know that there was a special plumbers putty for corain, granite, marble, etc.. sinks. Also, the special sink wrench used to tighten evenly will help. Now I am going to try to fix this friggin' drain for the third time! Thanks dude! God bless you!
Thank you for making this video and helping a clueless person successfully replace a sink strainer!
Glad it was helpful! Alan!
Great video. Plumbers putty is easy to install and unlike silicone, easy to remove the next time something fails.
Yep, it's much easier to work with than silicone for sure.
Great. Video Jeff.
Nice work!
What a patient teacher. Well done.
Thank you so much man my sink has been put together wrong and seriously messed up and Ive never been able to get help because of funds and I finally fixed it thanks to you.
Awesome news, glad to hear it
Best how to video I’ve ever watched. Super helpful!
Man! You rock! Thanks so much!! You are the reason people like me who don't have any support or teachers don't give up!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Hands down , the best quick/slow speaker… just right ! Thanks
Just love the way you explain things in detail. Feels like I’m gaining experience by watching 😆
Excellent instructional video. You are good to zoom in on steps that are glossed over. Very good for us homeowners who attempt to do plumbing. Haha. All the best!
Thank you very much Brent
Phenomenal explanation. Gave his reasoning for everything.
Great tutorial. Everyone working on a kitchen sink should watch.
thanks a million Jeff, I had a leak and the old strainer threads were rusted so bad they broke but luckily I had a strainer and followed your instructions
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Thank you so much, this been very helpful. I'm a mom with a leaky kitchen sink'untañ drain pipe. God bless 😊
Thank you for putting in all the "tricks." It made the instruction easier for me to understand.
Great video.. Guy explained and showed video so well …so people explain how to videos and leave out information assume you know..anyone can do this ..people that shoot How-to-videos should take note 😊
Thank you! This is seriously one of the best instructional videos I’ve ever seen!
Wow, thanks!
Truly outstanding video. Your informative attention to detail, and simple yet articulate demeanor are effective indeed. Well done...
Such clear video and great focus on the details! I wish all instruction videos were this clear and detailed. Great job!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Great explanation on how to do this correctly. It was missing a step on myself by not cleaning the plumbers putty off the bottom first before putting up the nut which was giving me problems everything shifting so appreciate the info.
Very informative! Thanks! Stay at home mom here about to try this by myself 😅
I know you can do it!
Thank you! Your step by step process saved me soooo much money and helped me keep my hero status with the wife!
Great video. Just replaced my laundry room sink step by step. Thanks for posting this.
Much better vid than the first one. No background music really allowed me to focus on the video
Glad to make that improvement for you Bob!
Great video. Thanks so much. Fixed my Mom’s leaking sink drain.
You're welcome!
Thank you so much this really helped, I was having a hard time getting a plumber I am a woman and knew that there is not too much science involved thank you
Glad to help Mayra!
You are a lifesaver. Thanks for this video! I can now replace the drain on our kitchen sink. Been leaking and needs new one
OMG that paper ring resolved all my problems 🙈 totally thought that was just trash lol. THANK YOU!!
Thank you so much for this video! You are a very good teacher. I am going to install a sink drain tomorrow and this will really help!
Glad to help Bee!
Wow. Fantastic video. I was ready to give up, but thanks to you I got the job done. Flawless presentation, which not only gave the information, but made me really appreciate the important details.
Great to hear!
Awesome detail - thank you. So many possible fail points if you don’t do it all the right way.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Jeff. have done about all in a home before but it’s been a while & there is so many types now , good updates , videos etc
Right on
Jeff - thank you for posting this video. It gave me the confidence to replace our leaking sink drain myself. So far it’s holding 🤞🏻
Happy holidays
Glad it helped way to go!
Awesome glad it were done for you
This was a very useful video - no frills, keep it simple and straightforward with accurate and clear descriptions of the functions of the different pieces and their role in the overall configuration.
Superior demonstration with a perfect ending 👌 Thank You!
Thanks Brant, glad to help
God bless you and your work, Jeff!! I really appreciated your detailed step-by-step tutorial!!!
Thank you so much.. you explained more thoroughly than my local hardware store.
This was super helpful! Thank you so much!! Changed both of my sink drains. The hardest part was getting the old nut off...had to use WD-40.
Great job!
This video sure helped me out today. everything went as you planned!
Jeff, u explain things very well. Good teacher u r! Thank u so much!😃
Thank you! 😃 Jon!
Thank you from Bakersfield California. Your video really helped us. We also saved some money!
Great to hear!
