In South America, France owns a territory called French Guiana, but why does it? What's the story behind this little far-flung department?

French Guiana was briefly taken by Brazil during the Napoleonic wars, right after the Portuguese Royal family had relocated to Rio. It was done in retaliation to the invasion of mainland Portugal.
Also there were some bizarre later declassified plan of Brazilian President Jânio Quadros to invade French Guiana. We don't know how serious that consideration was, but he ruled for less than one year before abdicating. His vice-president, João Goulart, suffered the coup d'état that started the Brazilian Military Dictatorship.

The Quadros plans make more sense and seem less crazy when put in the historical context. Brazil and France had just had a diplomatic standoff of French ships threatening to enter Brazilian waters as part of the “Lobster wars” dispute, meaning France as a threat to Brazil was fresh in everybody’s minds. Alongside it the 60s were the time the French colonial empire collapsed for good, with the French army getting humiliated in places like Indochina and Algeria. They had just agreed to withdraw from Algeria, a place they considered an integral part of France before. So the precedent was there that France was weak and being forced to decolonize everywhere, and the motive was there as well as the port of Cayenne was being used to export gold illegally mined from the Brazilian Amazon. So although a bold plan that seems insane nowadays, it had some merit back in the early 60s.

French military won the Algerian War, that's why there was a huge bitterness when De Gaulle decided to leave the area anyway.
If it was in the 60s, when De Gaulle was in power, France would had fought back.
Look at stuff like Bizerte crisis in 1961. When Tunisia tried to take by force a French base that was scheduled to be abandoned by 1963.
Even small stuff like that was militarily answered by France.

Hi, a French here, I just want to precise two things :
    - First, France shares a land border with 12 countries actually : Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands (via Saint-Martin island), Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain, Andorra, Brasil, Suriname, and the UK (via the Channel Tunnel that is legally a land border (see the Treaty of Canterbury of 1986))
    - Second, the comparison of Guyana being part of France in the same way that an American state is part of the USA is not representative of reality. It is important to understand that French Guiana is only a region like any other, in a unitary and centralized country in which these regions are more or less only administrative divisions with no real political power. Thus, a better comparison would be, for example, to compare France to an American state, say California, and Guyana would be only a county of this state. French Guiana is to France what a county would be to California if it were located on the other side of an ocean.
    Thanks for the video !

the truth of the matter is that Brazil, even after the Paraguayan War and the whole Acre affair, always thought "why the hell would I pay (or fight) for another piece of jungle that can at best hold a subpar port?"
after Brazil won the border dispute with France (that, of course, wanted waaaay more land that ended up with), nobody cared anymore -- and even if France thought "this will be the initial base of our future expedition into Brazil, to get a biggest piece of the Amazon", well, now they cannot do it anymore.

you are wrong and right at the same time. France is a multicultural country. In 1960 after all the independance, 60 per cent of the french didn't have as native langage french. Occitan German chti Briton Basque Corse Provençal Catalan ...for the european territory and créole and other langage for overseas territories. But french republic impose to all to learn french for decade. the use of french start with school and it's mandatory. It is forbid to speak an other langage in school. it's to have a lingua franca (same langage) in all the empire. For that reason, some country in africa kept the french even after indepance because it's more easy to communicate with your neigbourg if you speak their langage. So French and creole are their first langage. One for the day to day life and one for school work administrative stuff, and most important thing to communicate with the other french. To be president of the senate like Gaston Monerville in 1960. When you leave in a country typicali with time you learn the langage of the country. If you leave in Russia you will learn the Russe. French citizen can speak french

French as the language of education of France has a much longer history than that from my understanding. French was limited to the north of France until about the French revolution when efforts to francize all French citizens began and the French government has just tighten those screws ever since squeezing the other languages out of Metropole France.
However, it apparently hasn't been as strong in Overseas France, mostly because there's some neglect that happens given how relatively unpopulated Overseas France is. There aren't even four million people in Overseas France from what I've read, which contrast with Metropole France having about 60 million people or more.
However, I'd like to know more. It's an interesting situation given that France overall is such a rich country, yet outside touristy areas Overseas France can be quite poor, like most of Latin America or Africa. I wish I could ask people there how they feel about the French language, do they feel it is their language or just the language they need to do bureaucracy? Those are two different feelings which led to two different outcomes in cultural cohesion given how widespread the total area of the French Republic actually is.

@@OpinionesDeJACCsOpinions here's your answer: noone is forcing us to speak french, but we need it to study , work , it's natural to us to speak french , we watch french television , and read french litterature , it is our language, part of us. They are many "creoles" that all sound different and are not mutualy intelligble , "creoles" are variants of french, they have been recognized as official languages two decades ago and are also taught in schools, but it's complicated because there is no formal "creole" , they are local contructs constantly evolving, some are trying to do as for french, officialize , organize and settle it , but with little success. The vast majority of us don't want independance and we don't have anymore right to these lands than anyone else , we are all "imports", mixed between former slaves , settlers, inmates, slave owners, it's all part of us. Actually what we would want would be more implication from the mainland because we feel left out since we Know France does'nt really want to keep us at all, they wish we'd have chosen independance, and we are a burden on the economy (exept for guyana because of the space laucher). Many non -french or even some french citizen don't get this at all , there is this romantic idea of independance , but many don't realize that french is as much part of what we are , our culture, rights, history , as anything else.

Anyway, how have creoles been made official when only French is the sole official language of the French Republic?
Do you really think Metropole French, even those in government, think that Overseas France shouldn't be part of France? What gives you that impression when Metropole France is such a powerhouse that I don't think Overseas France is much of a burden, my opinion only.
Also, I do agree that in the Americas we are all mixed. This is something not many of us seem to accept, especially in Northern America where there's this constant anxiety about the many skin tones and cultures that inhabited and inhabit this continent!

When I saied "official" , I meant "legit" , an actual language, I don't know how to express it english. not only frenhc is "authorized" , only french is authorized in administration just as only english is "authorized" in the US, a country needs a common language. Local dialects are taught in schools , in overseas territory and in mainland France, they can count for our equivalent of the SAT's , we can major in them, and they are displayed on the public space, you will see the name of the streets written in creole or occitan, we have public channels and TV shows in our language.
Why I think it's a burden? Because it is , overseas territories don't produce much; and a great chunk of the populations lives on wellfare, France has a very generous social system and a heavy administration, to maintain a western way of living , good hospitals and good schools it needs a ton of ressources. We can study for free, we have a "free" healthcare system" , families get alowances for raising children, women get money when they're single mums (which they mostly are), very often we don't even have to pay rent. The mainland pushes the idea of independance very often. Meanwhile, Britain finished repaying its loan in 2015. The 1917 -1920 loans by France have nothing to do with WWII or the Cold War, what a load of dung suggestion.

Well... it's complicated. France definitely has no control over Vietnam and Algeria, but a lot of the former French colonies in West Africa use what is called the West African CFA franc, which is mostly controlled by France. That, along with the constant deployment of French military forces to combat insurgent groups -kill anyone the French don't like- as well as a tight coupling of economic dependency has led to it being called "Françafrique".
So, in short, it's a turbo-LARP on France's part and a disturbing neoliberal take on colonialism. One of the former leaders of Gabon said: "Gabon without France is like a car with no driver. France without Gabon is like a car with no fuel..."
