  • In a very special 1-on-1 episode of Talking Feds, Rachel Maddow joins Harry to discuss the stunning, and relatively unknown, historical episodes of American flirtation with fascism and armed insurrection in the 1940s, which she chronicles in her latest tour-de-force podcast, Ultra. After delving into some of the highlights of the remarkable 80-year-old story, the two discuss the possible lessons for our own troubled times and how we as a society can push back against today’s parallel threats.

TALKING FEDS PODCAST is a roundtable discussion that brings together prominent former government officials, journalists, and special guests for a dynamic and in-depth analysis of the most pressing questions in law and politics.

So excited to see Rachel Maddow today with you Harry. We love her, read her book Bagman and loved it. We listened to Ultra driving home from Texas to California. We couldn’t stop listening to it, we were blown away by all that we had never heard about! We were really stunned, and we kept looking at each other and saying “history is repeating itself”! Great job Rachel. Please keep it up, this is our history, and it sure is not taught in our schools!

When will you do a book on Daddy Bush and drugs for rifles, to Jeb and the lost election, to Dubya attacking Iraq. It is essential to accurate U.S. history. YALE U. Secret organizations also need a bright light shined on them.

Of course Pope Pius 12 and those in the Vatican and many priests and Catholics helped war criminals escape . Daniel Silva has written (beautifully researched) several books that cover Catholicism, with an intriguing Jewish protagonist.

An excellent discussion. ULTRA is a very educational podcast series. The best bit about it is learning about how we have faced similar challenges to our democracy in the past and that we were able to overcome them, at least temporarily. It feels like this will be an ongoing struggle in society for some time to come. I’m pleased to hear that it is going to be turned into a movie.👍

Thank you, Rachel Maddow and Harry Litman for this specific podcast on American Fascism.
In the late 1960s, I resided in W. Germany; living off base, within the German economy, and working for the U.S. government. I recall then conversations with our German landlady who shared her family’s times she endured under Adolf Hitler’s regime.
Authoritarianism is Fascism. Are we, as Americans, so naïve? So blind? So unmindful too grasp the wolf in sheep’s clothing? Or, has time simply left us void of the truth that our ancestors fought against and died for, so we might have democracy?
Let’s hope Americans are listening to this podcast so “we see and grasp” our vulnerability to fascism, which is subtly insidious. Amen.
    Godspeed, Rachel Maddow…

Thanks so much, Rachael and Harry. This program provides a glimmer of hope. Another voice against democracy at and before the time of Coughlin was the well-known journalist and literary figure, Walter Lippmann. Noam Chomsky, in his documentary “Manufacturing Consent,” mentions Lippmann and Lippmann’s book “Public Opinion” as rather foundational to the idea that some people don’t deserve a voice in governing. The idea can be traced back to Plato and the idea of Philosopher Kings. Of course the problem is and always has been: just which people should be in this cadre of power. There are always those who, if left to their unfettered devices, will seek money and power to satisfy their own selfish desires. The others of us are content to contribute and to live our lives in peace. This is why Democracy, however flawed and vulnerable, is the best form of government.

Very recently, a woman that I had connected with here on UA-cam, a woman whom I liked very much, who seemed to be a progressive Democrat, made a few unbelievably anti-semitic remarks - causing me to have to depart from the group as I cannot overlook stuff like that. I told her I would not be able to return in private email and then she made yet another remark - saying jewish people always give her a stomach ache. since I am a jewish convert (partially in protest of the holocaust) I was sort of used to it as often people will say the most appalling things, not knowing I am Jewish (since I don’t look jewish). I think she did know though. the interesting thing was that all of the other women are now not speaking to me either - I guess in support of her as she was the group leader. A few weeks earlier, I had sent each woman a piece of my artwork and they all appreciated it very much. I had spent a great deal of time creating these little wooden collaged pieces all using cutouts from the same watercolor painting. Now I wish I had not wasted so much of my time on them. I know that sounds bitter but this was the worst incident of anti-Semitism I had ever personally encountered actually.

I knew about the isolationists and I knew about Lindburgh being an anti-semite but had no idea about this Catholic priest or how high numbers of 1940s Americans were committed to a Nazi party or at least Nazi sympathizers. It brings me some hope that we can overcome this current rendition of American Nazism.

Harry and Rachel are my new best friends. Thanks for this. My wife and I purchased a home in Wellington NZ that stood in good order for over a hundred years, on land that gets over a hundred earthquakes a year. My wife, who wanted it more than I said it will most likely stand for another hundred. No, no it most likely won’t I told her. With every little quake the foundation gradually gives way and becomes vulnerable.
Democracy as well. It’s not enough just to send the seditious elements into retreat. Each of their efforts will continue to erode, in some small measure at least, the foundation. We need to eliminate the need for their festering in the first place. Suggestions?
