    The first time I went to Yosemite as an adult, I met Ivo in the meadow under El Cap, who had Dean's dog with him. He was talking to us and then I looked up and saw a large object falling from the sky. It looked like a rock, then a bird, then a squirrel, then it landed in the meadow and I realized it was Dean! ...I once had a dream that I was in an area like Tuolumne with rolling granite domes. I had a haul bag on and walked over to a large hole, jumped down with a parachute, and aide climbed a long 5.9A3 route to get back out. That's how I imagine my Heaven to be. It astonished me that someone could invent and perfect this strange 'flying squirrel' suit and then its just mindboggling they can do that kind of deadly daredevil jump like that. It seems to me it's a strange thing where it will be terminal. Everyone who does these kinds of extreme flying contraption suits has or will die. Now the thing is, it will 1-in-300 sort of guarantee but nobody really knows when it happens. It could be your 12th jump but another may very well do 299 then die.
    Funnily enough, people who raise and live with wild animals such as chimps or tigers have pretty much the same thing going on.
    You WILL die. The excitement might be that you just don't know if its sooner or later but you WILL die from it.

They also live their lives mostly "hand to mouth", sacrificing family, career and meaningful relationships in exchange for their (self-indulgence) "sport". I'm not "hating" on Dean, and I agree with the sentiment that it's best to live a short interesting life than a long and boring life. HOWEVER, it seems that age was definitely cutting into Dean's enjoyment of extreme sports. It seemed at this point he was merely doing it because he had always done it. He describes a lot of anxiety leading up to this jump, and it may have been time to dial it back and simply enjoy the outdoors without risking life and limb. It seems he was living on reputation at this point, and not on passion.

      Stella Johnson - Stella, they hit the rock outcropping before the ripcord of the parachute would have been pulled. I don't think it was fishy, I think it could have been a gust of wind came up unexpectedly. The route that they were taking was close to the rocks anyway. They were flying in close proximity to one another. I was a big fan of his work. Cheers

      James S Auww, thanks for the explanation, I wouldn't mind seeing the footages of his head-cam. I guess it won't be released. It must have been something unexpected indeed because this guy micro-calculated every bit of his move. A genius to say the least!!! Also, he didn't take his dog. That stood out to me. He must have felt something. x

    It amazes, me these flying squirrel-like suits, that one can take that moment to jump and then come into utter consciousness to control, the flight. Everyone dreams of flying, but not everyone is brave enough to take the leap.

    Impressive feat, but sad how he lost his life. In Greek mythology, Icarus and Daedalus tempted fate by trying to fly, and suffered the same end. We must accept that testing the fire as daredevils, will not always give us a second chance.

    no, he uses a parachute to land. The Fly Suit is just a way for him to glide through the air. He still needs a parachute to slow down and land safely

      I was wondering that also, but I'm sure they hung off ropes to erect it, maybe with the help of a helicopter flying up a load or cement, but who knows!

    • @paulhomsy2751
      @paulhomsy2751 3 роки тому

      Hanging ropes from the top. The ramp is light but very stable. Erected the same way camps are erected on big walls.

    I can tell you that jumping out of an airplane was one of the most peaceful and exciting things that I've ever done at the same time. I used to have dreams of falling and I'd wake up sweating and afraid. After I started skydiving I started having dreams of falling and flying and I would wake up excited. Life is totally different after you face your fears. I hope that you people who are bad mouthing these guys can face the things that scare you and conquer it. Peace.

    Very risky to stand near the edge without a harness. A sudden gust of wind 🌬 and it’s a bad situation. Also yes to many people, asking about the platform. I have built a few “stages” in my time. It would have been very interesting for viewers. One thing you would see, would be a lot of people wearing harnesses, with every person knowing exactly what their job was.
